Oliver in Mock Draft as First Rounder

Years ago I was all into the belief that a kid should finish college and get a degree. Not anymore. There is just way too much money. To me the biggest risk of staying isn’t injury, it’s having an unimpressive year and having your stock drop.

Not sure the first part is accurate. Once you declare and hire an agent, you are no longer an amateur. Pretty sure he would immediately become ineligible to compete in any Spring sports. He could probably declare but not hire an agent, but that would set him back, IMO.
Yep. It all has to do with hiring an agent. It's why you see a lot of basketball players declare for the draft, but not hire an agent. They can then still have amateur status and go back to college if they don't get drafted, or get the grade they want.

I'm sure it makes you ineligible for that sport, but I don't think it affects another.

Luke brought up the Bloom incident, but that was sponsorship and/or endorsement monies. A whole different rule book for the ncaa.

Either way, it will be very difficult to do both pro football and the olympics. I don't envy the hard choice he's gonna have to make.

That's what it was, I wasn't sure, just knew something happened. Wiki said Bloom was an Eagle, I recall that a little now. I don't remember him being in Pittsburgh too though.

I don’t think getting a low first round grade automatically means he leaves. Someone who gets a low first round grade as a junior could realistically get a top 5 grade as a senior. The money difference between those two is significant.

That being said, I’m leaning more towards him leaving than staying

I think you guys are off on the eligibility situation.

Bloom was not ineligible because he had an agent or because he received prize money for skiing. The issue was that he received money in sponsorships with the sponsors using his image.

Oliver having an agent and receiving money for playing football would not impact his ability to run track in the NCAA. It would be similar to some of the guys who have played minor league baseball for pay and still been able to play football or other sports. Good example was Joel Klatt who played multiple years of professional baseball before returning to CU. The limitation, and I have no idea how it works is that he had to pay his own way, something a pro football team would be willing to provide for a guy who they see as a first round talent

If you get a low first round grade a year earlier you hit your second contract a year earlier, which is where you make all of your money. Honestly if you are graded out in the top 3 rounds you go, and if you are drafted in the second or third and you are good enough it is actually better because you are only under contract for your years and can hit it big in free agency after 4.

NCAA being the NCAA. Missy Franklin didn't take any money from sponsorship's due to it rendering her ineligible. However, someone can play a professional sport, get paid, then go back to college and get a scholarship. So stupid.

The summer before his senior year, Elway made $100,000 playing baseball in the Yankees organization. The NCAA argued that Bloom’s ski related endorsements were received, in part, because of his football notoriety.

Wasn't this scenario like Jeremy Bloom's more or less except for the NFL part. I mean didn't he have to give up football to do moguls or whatever he did? Wait didn't Bloom play in the league for a bit? Been awhile and I don't recall.
