OSU game fallout thread

I love Tad. Part of the reason is that I know that he's got his eyes wide open, recognizes issues and is going to address them.

To draw a parallel to the regular job world, I think about how common it is for employees and co-workers to be excuse makers, blame assigners and political animals. How rare it is to encounter someone who will cowboy up and say, "I ****ed up. This is the problem. This is how we're going to fix it." Tad is someone who cowboys up. I don't see that from MacIntyre.
I’m not disagreeing with the fact that Tad appropriately takes responsibility, but often I’ve noticed after a loss he mixes “we” and “they” in his discussion (with”they” being his players. Don’t know that it’s inappropriate, players have a responsibility as well as coaches, but I would prefer that he always refer to the team as “we,” and every time I hear “they” it sort of grates.

I’m still not impressed with Cal. Very good defense and an atrocious offense. The offense only scored 6 points in that win yesterday.

Would be interesting if they lose the next 3 (which is possible @ Wazzu, @ USC, and Stanford at home) making our matchup a battle for bowl eligibility.

Cal is not impressive, but they can win a physical 14-13 type game. Can CU? Especially coming off a tough two game stretch against Wazzu and Utah?

between the Dodgers and the Buffs yesterday, it may have been the single chokiest ****job day of sports in the history of sports.

This is about the staff that either doesn’t have a rule about this or doesn’t care.

It’s not about Viska. It’s about culture and leadership.
This just isn’t something I can get too upset about. It happened (on tv at least) during an OSU timeout in overtime. Maybe the staff didn’t want him being a distraction to players in the game - who knows.

They can also lose by 30 at home to UCLA. It feels like a game where we win if we can score 20 which this offense should. It would be a good matchup.

Contrast his behavior with Winfree’s.

It should be addressed. But won’t.

Remember a few months ago when we all thought USC and UW on the road were the toughest games on the schedule??? F.

You must have watched both players exclusively on the sidelines because there’s no way you could make a claim about their behavior otherwise.

Yeah, I am not implying it will be a blowout in Cal's favor, but our offense on the road is not a comforting thought at the moment.

The 6th win needs to happen before that game or it will not happen at all IMO. I just cannot see the Buffs riding a six-game losing streak really even showing up (see: Utah in 2017, just a closer game due to Cal's offense).

I'm not going to include all of the Shenault posts, but everyone defending what he was doing seems a little off base. I equate it to the "leap frog" incident. He is a bona fide leader of this team. A warrior. His name has been mentioned in Heisman circles. Not sure how many people on this board played sports or coach, but it is a standard practice to have the bench, especially injured stars, engaged...and super especially during times of duress. I'd also like to point out that they showed Shenault numerous times through the game, not just the one instance sitting on the bench texttweetfacing. And every time I made a comment about his lack of engagement. Now obviously I don't know what he was doing the entire game, but every time they showed him, it was at a point that his team could have used some motivation and he wasn't giving it.
I can't tell anyone on hear what to think about what he was or wasn't doing, but from my perspective, as a coach, he and I would have a little talk and it would be one directional. That being said, I think most are right about the culture at this point...and it won't happen.

I don’t really care about the Viska thing, but I also don’t think it’s a nothing burger when your star player is just sitting on the bench on his phone when his offense is trying to keep the game alive in OT. It just made him seem disinterested, that’s all, and just somewhat reminds me of this teams attitude down the stretch and going into the Utah game last year.

I wish I shared the optimism of those that think MM will be fired if we lose out the remaining 4 games. Sadly, he's not going anywhere even if that's how the final stretch plays out. You'll see.

You're off your rocker if you think Benson and the CU Regents would approve a $10M buyout for MM. Let's not forget Rick George gave him a generous contract extension in 2017. Plus, he was voted AP 'Coach of the Year' in 2016. As much as you'd like to believe otherwise, Rick George has limited 'say' in what happens when it comes to firing, hiring, and buyouts.

I've fully stepped off the MM bandwagon after these last 3 'performances'... Although I've had one foot off that train since last season's WSU shutout win.

We can hope... but don't set yourself up for a letdown. Somebody else is going to have to choke for this team to win another game. This team's issues run far deeper than Laviska being out and shh!tty play calling.

I'm hoping we win out and get a little redemption. However, it's more likely we'll be a 5-7 team and MM returns for 2 more seasons before any talk of firing him has traction with those that can make that call.

I don’t disagree, but in that scenario Cal would be riding a 3 game losing streak of their own which would be a huge letdown after the UW victory. This offense has averaged 22 ppg in true road games - if Viska is back and healthy by then I think we’re capable of scoring enough (20-24 ish) to beat Cal. My biggest fear (which I think you were alluding to) is if this team has totally given up by then.

If this happens - and I think it likely will - it will tell much about this program and it’s commitment.

This version of a lingering flounder is just not allowed at real programs, or any other worthwhile business dedicated to excellence and achievement.

It baffles me.

I didn't think the tex-tweetface was a good look when the game was on the line, but for all I know he might have been addressing an important family matter or something.

If you look at the statistics from this game, we did plenty to win. This loss is completely on Mac setting a soft tone whether you get up by 28 and tell a pack of wild dogs to not eat the meat you killed, rather walk away and starve. Hated to see Elliott’s group give up in the second half, as the D has been a bright spot. Not sure where this team goes from here, something is now broken in the Brotherhood! Not sure if the Viska publicity has poisoned the chemistry?

watching the postgame press conference

Mac clearly had no idea what happened. "uhhhh, they made plays and we didn't"

we didn't have to make plays man, we just had to get a few first downs and stop the juggernaut that was the Brian Lindgren offense once.

Mac is a nice guy and well intentioned, but he needs to go back to coaching in a smaller time conference.

MM's failure to keep the foot on the gas is all the more infuriating when you dissect that game, and how we never really dominated them:
  • Before his big run after the half, Travon had ~25 yards on 11 carries if I recall ... and that big run was flukey (small hole, one missed arm tackle)
  • CU offense scored 17 points in the 1st half ... 7 of which were on a long pass to Nixon
  • So really, we scored 10 points on drives where we methodically drove down the field ... absolutely pathetic at home vs. the worst program in the conference
  • Jefferson was gouging us, nearly 100 yards at the half
If I'm coach after Travon's run, I'm thinking "We're lucky to be up 31-3, we're not this good, we need to keep scoring ...."

If you are going to tout yourself as this DB genius, you should probably be able to recruit some corners who can cover.

His soft attitude has permeated everything. I sat with the students and they were already leaving and making plans about what party they were going to when we were up 31-3.
