Into the heart of the season, most teams playing conference games, some teams playing hard every week and some other teams just playing weakly. Arkansas fired their coach after last week’s blowout loss to Notre Dame, are there more firings on the way.

Thursday night’s only game is one of those for those too sick or lazy to leave the recliner. Two of the worst teams in college football. The Sam Houston Bearkats “Bear Craps” (0-4) at the New Mexico State Aggies (2-2). With both teams this bad at least it should be close enough to be somewhat entertaining.

Friday’s games aren’t much to rush home for. Quick, which schools have the nicknames of the Hilltoppers and the Blue Hens? Western Kentucky (4-1) at Delaware (3-1) who we have already forgotten about after three weeks of real games.

Somehow Fox is paying to put New Mexico (3-1) at San Jose State (1-3) on FS1. Look at the records and then see that San Jose is favored and that is all you need to know about this one.

BYU fans get to be the ones with two consecutive late night games this time. West Virginia (2-3) is at (23)BYU (4-0). Mountaineers have lost their last two by a combined 89-24. The fans who go to sleep after halftime can be excused because this one will probably be long over by then.

Saturday has a couple of matches between top 25 teams. It also has some games that could get ugly as weak teams are catching highly ranked squads coming off big losses.

Early games include Kentucky (2-2) at (12) Georgia (3-1.) Georgia lost a nailbiter to (10) Alabama last week. Kentucky’s record doesn’t look bad until you realize their wins are against MAC schools.

(14) Iowa State (4-0) looks to stay unbeaten at Cincinnati (3-1.)

Normally Clemson is worried about where they are in the rankings. They started the year expected to compete for the playoff, right now they just want to win a game. Clemson (1-3) is still a big favorite at North Carolina (2-2.) The Tarheels have their own problems with an old pro coach who is dating a young pro.

Mid-day most eyes will be on (16) Vanderbilt (5-0) at (10) Alabama (3-1.) Most years this is a game the Tide plans on playing the walk-ons but Vandy has turned a weak schedule into an undefeated record. Even more eye opening for Bama fans is Vandy upsetting them last year at a key time, can it happen again?

Another game of interest has Boise State (3-1) at (21) Notre Dame (2-2.) Boise has played a joke of a schedule. Notre Dame got off to a rough start but what isn’t a joke is them averaging 46 points per game against tougher competition.

Somehow Louisville (4-0) is a big favorite at home against (24)Virginia (4-1) despite Virginia knocking (18)Florida State down the rankings last week.

(9)Texas (3-1) is at Florida (1-3.) Florida has a history of being slow to fire coaches and Billy Napier survived last year after a slow start but the rumors are swirling and Texas has enough talent to put the kind of beating on the Gators to stir things up even more.

It may be time to park the coroner's van outside the Rose Bowl this week. (7)Penn State (3-1) is at UCLA (0-4.) Bruins have already fired their coach so they can’t do that again until they hire a new one. Meanwhile Pedo State is coming off a (yet another to a top 10) loss at home to (2) Oregon. Bruins fans instead of chanting U-C-L-A may be chanting U-N-C-L-E.

In the land of truck stops, trailer parks, and terrified sheep, Nebraska (3-1) hosts Michigan State (3-1) following a bye and another one score loss. A win by the Spartans would sent the red polyester crowd looking for their meth dealer.

The early evening slate starts with (11)Texas Tech (4-0) at Houston (4-0.) Red Raiders put a lot of money into NIL expecting to be good but few expected them to be this good.

Mississippi State (4-1) goes to College Station to face (6)Texas A&M (4-0). SEC schools all have a special kind of weirdness, Texas schools have a special kind of weirdness. It all seems to converge at A&M. Aggies are known for getting their fans' hopes up only to find a way to crush those hopes, not likely to happen this week though.

Big game of the night though is for supremacy in Florida. (3)Miami (4-0) at (18)Florida State (3-1.) Don’t blink because both teams are loaded with speed. Hurricanes are pushing for a high seed in the playoff, Seminoles still have hopes of getting in.

Late night game is a ho-hum Duke (3-2) at Cal (4-1.)

Penn State’s destruction of UCLA doesn’t qualify them for the blowout of the week. A greater mismatch by far is Kent State (1-3) at (5)Oklahoma (4-0.) The Golden Flushes have held their last three opponents to only a combined 159 points. The Sooners, never ones to pass up the opportunity to pile on to a blowout, are coming off a narrow win over Auburn and will be looking to get their offense working full speed.

The Garbage Game is the earlier mentioned Thursday pillow fight between Yosemite Sam Houston State and New Mexico State of Decay.

Locally CSU gets to avoid the hometown boos by playing Friday night on the road. CSU (1-3) is at San Diego State (3-1.) Sheep can’t afford to fire their coach but their few fans left will continue to call for it.

Air Force (1-3) is at Navy (4-0) Saturday in an early game on national television. Service academy games are always spectacular and can be unpredictable but the Falcons don’t look to have much hope against Canoe U. this year.

Wyoming (2-2) is hosting UNLV (4-0.) Cowboys have played a much tougher schedule buy may have trouble keeping up on the scoreboard. Rebels get lucky in visiting Laramie before winter hits.

Northern Colorado coming off a tough loss last week to Idaho State gets a bye this week. They are much improved over recent years, enough to look forward to the rest of the season.

Small colleges are also in the heart of the season. Not likely to see any coaches fired here though for teams that go to road games on buses.

(12)CSU Pueblo (4-1,2-0) is at New Mexico Highlands (3-1,1-0) this week.

Colorado Mesa (1-3,0-2) looks to get back on track at Colorado Mines (3-1,0-1) Mines has dropped off from the team they were a couple years ago but still a tough opponent.

(7)Western Colorado (4-0,1-0) goes to Durango to face Fort Lewis (1-3,0-2) who lost a heartbreaker by one point last week to South Dakota Mines.

Despite the score Adams State (0-4,0-2) did actually show up on the field last week for their 55-7 loss to Pueblo. Pueblo shut it down at halftime leading 45-0. This week they take another beating by Chadron State (3-2,3-0.)

With CU on the road this week, I was looking forward to locking up and watching a ton of college football. The best game of the day of course overlaps with CU's game and there are maybe 2 more games I'm even remotely interested in watching.

What ****ty timing.

Feeling the same. Prolly try and spend some time outdoors for part of Sat.

West Virginia and the New Rich Rod stole the Brent Venables stud protege DC from OU last year, Zac Alley. WVU did beat Pitt but ACC teams are a freak show. and Narduzzi is weird.

WVU is giving up points like crazy.

Speaking of OU, Mateer had hand surgery......so backup is playing against Kent State. I think Mateer is a really good football player, not an elite QB.

What else, not a Mario Cristobal believer* and FSU probably doesn't know who they are, either. 2 wins last year, whoop Bama, lose to UVA.

ATM v. MIss State will be one of those SEC games where the teams have basically identical unis. Oklahoma v. Arkansas will be the same when that happens. The SEC also has 100 teams that are either the tigers or bulldogs.

*how many times do we have to go through the U is back? the ACC is mediocre. maybe it's this year, but until it is I am gonna am going to stick with empirical evidence it ain't.

Former CU Buff (and former Houston Cougar and Arizona Sun Devil) Alton McCaskill starting RB for Sam Houston tonight.

Can see why Sam Houston is so bad. They talentwise may be better than NMSU but they just can't keep themselves from making bad plays or not making good ones.

Actually been a somewhat entertaining game but don't know if it is coaching or just character but Sam Houston is just set on self-destruct.

These types of weeks that look sleepy often end up being some of the best. Week 2 this year was kind of like that with some very entertaining games despite there being only 1 marquee matchup.

Most of these games were touched on by Mtn but in the early window there's 2 crucial Big12 games with KSU at Baylor and both teams only have 1 loss in conference. And ISU at Cincinnati is a tricky road game for the Cyclones, Cincy is also undefeated in conference. Clemson at UNC looked like a big game back in August but even with both teams looking bad, Belichick's UNC team is like a car wreck where it's terrible but you can't help but watch.

Wisconsin-Michigan sounds like a mismatch on the surface but Wisconsin played Maryland closer than that score indicates. Maryland's first 2 TDs came on drives of 4 and 28 yards following an interception and a blocked punt. Speaking of undefeated Maryland they host Washington in the 3:30 window.

At 3:30 that Vandy-Bama game is very intriguing. Diego Pavia isn't lacking for confidence so it's not surprising that Manziel will be on the sideline. Vandy hasn't been challenged late yet but the only decent team they played was SCarolina when Sellers left the game early on. Texas-Florida could be more interesting than most think and it will be low scoring.

Also in the 3:30 window is a matchup of 2 CFP teams from last year, Boise and ND. That 20 point spread seems awful high and I don't think Boise's schedule has been as weak as Mtn suggests. Since their stinker at USF they have played very well and dominated a decent App team last week. Meanwhile everyone is overreacting to NDs offensive explosion last week but forget to mention that it was against against a horrendous Arkansas defense.

I considered putting some of the games you mentioned in but didn't due to space and I try to highlight what look to be the most significant (up or down) or intriguing. Since writing the post (did most of it on Monday, later a couple revisions then post on Wednesday) I saw a link to a podcast that indicates that despite the success they have there are some Baylor fans who are not happy with Aranda. He has had one season finishing ranked, 2021, and barely got them into a bowl game last year. Don't know how realistic they are but Baylor fans think they should be a program that has a floor of 7-9 wins per year. Klieman at KSU certainly isn't in any kind of trouble but the fans were absolutely not expecting to be 2-3 with a loss to Army.

I turned on this UNCCharlotte-USF game and thought what a ****ty environment playing in an NFL stadium that is way too large for this program. And then I came across this tweet saying that USF is moving into a new on-campus stadium in 2027. Now if only The U could do the same type of thing, although I do believe they have space constraints on their campus.

CSU is unwatchable. I don’t get how Norvell could succeed at Nevada but is this bad at CSU
Norvell on the sidelines reminds me of an average high school coach. He just looks like he has no clue how to solve what the opponent is doing.

He also has a bunch of players who where the best player on a less than outstanding high school team. The guys who made it because they practiced hard, did everything that was asked of them, give it 100%, and playing FBS football are simply overmatched because as hard as they try they aren't good enough, and never will be, and will never acknowledge that fact.

What a ****ty Friday slate compared with last weekend.

none of you are watching byu vs wv ? yea right
Got it on the TV, watching CSU on the laptop.

Not much to say about the BYU game. WVU only has a TD because of a deep turnover. BYU going to be up by either 14 or 18 at half and WVU hasn't been able to sustain one drive all night.

And now similar in the CSU game 18 point margin at half, comeback highly unlikely but more fun to watch CSU lose.

The game changed on him.

The last 5 years have required a seismic shift in how coaches build and run football teams.

Some have done well amidst the changes, some have not.

And the changes aren't done happening yet.

No one yet knows where we'll end up, so even copying what has "worked" so far isn't necessarily a good idea.

Loving these long BIG road trips. No way this can be sustainable for all sports? The travel cost have to be outrageous to go along with all the travel time and ass' in seats.

I've posted before that I believe we'll end up with national football conferences and regional conferences for all other sports.

Rece Davis using the same car accident analogy for the Clemson-UNC game as I did in my post. Maybe he reads Allbuffs??

(Ok probably not)

Clemson has run 3 offensive plays and is up 14-3 with the ball. You can hear a pin drop in that stadium. This is likely to be an ugly game and I'm here for the train wreck!

We may even end up with football and likely basketball under an entirely separate governing body.

With the kind of money that they are generating with football and basketball the travel cost for the power conference schools isn't that big a deal. Also if they are chartering a plane that flies them out, waits, then flies them back don't know if there is a huge difference in cost between a 2 hour flight and a 4 hour flight.

Where the big cost come in is for the sports that don't generate significant revenues and traditionally have done a lot of their travel close enough to bus. For a school like Cal that historically could send the women's soccer team to play Stanford, UCLA, USC, even the PNW schools by bus now they have to put the team on an airplane to go to the East Coast. The length of the trips adds hotel nights, meal cost. etc.

Even in football we are seeing re-organization of the G5 conferences to involve a lot more travel. A conference like the AAC has Temple and Tulsa at opposite ends. They are already at a big disadvantage with NIL. Hard to imagine that kind of travel makes financial sense.

Did he refence Belichick's GF as a pro? That would tell us yes.

Surprised I didn't get a little feedback on that comment.

Air Force looks like a different team. They have found a QB and are getting the new starters working together.

Beating Navy would be huge for them.
