Already week 10 of the season. Seems like it just got started and we are starting towards wrapping up for some teams. Bowl games on the line, conference championships in sight and the snow is starting to fall.
Think it’s frosty here in Colorado this week. It’s Frostier in Nebraska where much of the state is currently huddling in their trailers afraid that a bunch of football players are going to come in and beat them up if they put on a hoodie.
It’s Frostier still as again the realization comes over them that again their dreams of a bowl hang on beating weaklings Maryland in a couple weeks and Purdue this week and with both on the road they could easily lose both.
Real games this week start on Thursday with (12) Baylor hosting West Virginia (3-4.) Baylor may have the least impressive 7-0 record in the country. They are hoping for some positive recognition before their next ugly scandal.
Friday night it’s (20) Appalachian State against Georgia Southern (4-3) and Navy (6-1) at a bad UConn team. Two games that combined may give us two quarters of competitive football.
Saturday we have a couple of games that for practical purposes are playoff games.
In the world’s largest cocktail party (8) Georgia tries for three in a row against (6) Florida. Each team has a loss so the loser is probably out of the playoff chase.
(15) SMU (another program with the SWC cheating lineage) wants the G5 spot in one of the big bowls. A loss at (24) Memphis would end that.
The oddsmakers don’t give Virginia Tech (5-2) much chance at (16) Notre Dame but after the way they got run off the field last week can the Irish get it back together in time to avoid giving us the pleasure of seeing them lose twice in a row. Worth noting, if things stay the same Notre Dame will go through the entire season playing two teams that end up in the rankings, and lose to them both.
Another couple games worth keeping an eye on. (22) Kansas State plays for state bragging rights at Kansas (3-5.) K-State has dominated this one in recent years while Kansas has been the dregs of P5 football. This year Kansas is showing signs of life and a win over the Kittycats would be huge for them.
Also in the B12 TCU (4-3) coming off a win over Texas is at Oklahoma State (5-3.) Both teams have been hard to figure out this year but each could end up in a quality bowl with a strong finish.
The B1G triangle of sex offenders, Pedo State, Michigan (Molester) State, and tOSU all have byes this week. kNU does play but it’s hard to call them big other than their big butts and overinflated sense of value.
Two huge games in the PAC 12 this week. (9) Utah visits Washington (5-3) and (7) Oregon takes their clown suits to USC (5-3.) Utah and Oregon are the best hopes for the league for the playoff but Washington is tough at home and USC seems to be coming back to life.
Closer to home the AFA (6-2) host Army (3-5.) Air Force has their best team in a few years and Army is down but in service academy games you can throw the records out the window.
After being counted for dead the sheep have suddenly won two games in a row. This week CSU (3-5) has a good chance to make it three in a row with a weak UNLV (2-6) coming in.
UNC (1-7) looks for its second win against an Idaho team this year at Idaho State (3-5.) Hope they don’ end up mashed.
Dixie State dropped off the pace leaving Mines (8-0) and Pueblo (7-1) at the top of the standings. This week both are on the road with Pueblo at Fort Lewis (3-5) and Mines at South Dakota Mines (1-6.)
