Boo, or trick or treat, if that is what you prefer.
Highlight weekend of the year for a lot of college students, the weekend they celebrate Halloween.
For football fans it can be scary as their teams are faced with critical games for bowl eligibility or even staying alive for the playoff.
Thursday night we have two ranked teams looking for that sixth win to make them bowl eligible.
(23) North Carolina State (5-2) welcomes in Virginia Tech (2-5) who at this point is less worried about a bowl than just getting a couple more wins, not likely here.
Also (15) Utah (5-2) has a tougher battle at Washington State (4-2) who would love to upset the Utes and put themselves one win away from a bowl.
Not much on Friday but East Carolina (5-3) would love to pick up their sixth win at BYU (4-3.) Cougars are favored but have lost 3 in a row while the Pirates have won 3 out of 4.
Saturday doesn’t have as many giant games as recent weekends have but we still get what should be some fun games in the top 25.
The day starts with (2) Ohio State (7-0) at (16) Pedo State (6-1.) This could be the toughest challenge for the Buckeyes until their yearly season ending spectacular against Michigan.
(11) Oklahoma State (6-1) which fell from the unbeatens a couple of weeks ago came back last week in a shootout against Texas. This week they go to (17) Kansas State (5-2) working to get back into the top 10.
(3) Tennessee (7-0) has surprised everyone and is in contention for the playoff. (19) Kentucky (5-2) would love to prove they aren’t just a basketball school and break Tennessee’s hopes.
Florida (4-3) has been in and out of the rankings this year. (1) Georgia (7-0) has mostly been in the opponent's end zone this year. World’s largest outdoor cocktail party is in Jacksonville this year and is often a much better game than the records coming in would indicate.
If we can’t watch our favorite teams win we can at least watch the teams we hate lose.
It’s never an entirely bad weekend when Notre Dame (4-3) loses. This week they are at (14) Syracuse (6-1) who wants to get back to winning after falling to Clemson last week.
Mel and Molester State University (3-4) look to get destroyed by cross state (4) Michigan (7-0) still smarting after dropping in the rankings despite staying undefeated.
Red is an appropriate color for Nebraska ((3-4) who are looking at getting embarrassed at home by (18) Illinois (6-1,) yes that Illinois is 6-1 and that Nebraska has to win 3 of their next 5 to be bowl eligible. In addition to Illinois they are facing Minnesota, (4) Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, all teams that have enjoyed beating up the huskers in recent years. Huskers hopes are as hollow as a jack-o-lantern and their fans are comparable in intelligence for believing in them.
Not much excitement in the PAC 12 this Saturday. Biggest question is what costume the Oregon Ducks will be wearing. In the past they have dressed as fluorescent highlighter markers. Last week they topped themselves with uniforms that closely resembled 1970s blacklight posters with random glow in the dark colors on a black background.
(10) Oregon (6-1) is at Cal (3-4) and (9) UCLA host Stanford (3-4.)
For those who appreciate really bad football this week it will be hard to top New Mexico State (2-5) at UMass (1-6.)
A local school may be on the receiving end of the blowout of the week. Somehow CSU (2-5) managed to pick up a win last week at home. This week they go to Boise (5-2) and the results aren’t likely to be as pleasant.
Wyoming (5-3) goes on the road to Hawaii (2-6,) the team CSU beat. A trip to the Islands should be a pleasant place to pick up bowl eligibility.
Air Force has the week off as does Northern Colorado who after getting beat 58-10 last week get to heal up a bit before resuming their losing ways next week.
Local small colleges keep rolling this weekend.
Mines (6-0,6-2) sits on top of the standings with a chance to almost wrap up the title playing at second place Western (5-1,5-3.) A win would give them a two game lead on the rest of the league.
Pueblo (4-2,5-3) is probably out of it but is still pushing for a strong finish. This week they go to Mesa (1-5, 2-5.)
How bad is Fort Lewis? This year’s 0-7 record leaves them 4 losses short of last years 0-11. After not playing in the Covid season they haven’t won a game in this decade with their last win being in 2019 before losing their last 5 of that season.
