Other games weekend of 9/13-9/15

All these games being cancelled is going to make this season really interesting. Many teams will be playing make-up games late in the season out of their conference schedule/games.

Glad that CSU can get this game in at Florida this week. This is the closest they will ever get to looking respectful at UF and I'm pulling for them 100%. PAC12 help! CSU financial help! Everyone wins if they show up and look respectful.

Tee Martin without Darnold has not been a good look. Hat tip to Jon Wilner's blog.

UCLA: Is Chip Kelly a good HEAD coach or did he inherit a program and staff at Oregon that was teed up? Did the Oregon "success and happiness" mask that he's basically an egomaniac that nobody likes to be around? Will players play for him if they are not successful? I'll be watching to see how much "quit" is in UCLA if they get down early. They need a fast start vs Fresno State.

Arizona with the get-well game vs. Southern Utah, at the best time ever. Wonder if they will keep Tate back there showing off his 70 yard cannon, throwing into free-space greenery?

Look for SDSU to win outright if ASU turns it over.

UW at Utah will be a game to watch. Can Utah get their offense going against UW when they couldn't vs NIU? Run game anemic and Huntley is not to be trusted to win you a game with his arm.

Interesting take on ASU.

The way they looked last week, I figure they'll have no problems with an admittedly solid SDSU team.

Cal schedule is front loaded with easier games. Backend looks rough.

North Carolina (which is awful)
@BYU (suspect)
Idaho State
Oregon
@ Arizona
UCLA
@Oregon State
Washington
@ WSU
@ USC
Stanford
Colorado

Could be 6-1 or 5-2 going into the UW game, and 6-5 or 5-6 coming into the CU game.

Edit: which means, if we're bowl eligible but out of the division race, and Cal comes in at 5-6, suddenly that's a trap game for us.

has always been my thought. I always thought Mike Bellotti was a hell of a coach and built o.

It's hard this early to take too much away. MSU has not looked good so I am not clear how much of that is ASU being good and MSU being not as good as rated. I suspect ASU is better than expected, but not so good that they can look past SDSU, who is pretty good and clocked them last year. D'antonio's teams are usually very good but I've noticed a cycle lately where they can be bad for a season. 3-9 then 10-3.

I'd be surprised if they scheduled anything but an FCS gimme. They know they likely can't go bowling without it.

1. ECU/VT is not a rivalry. Tech fans feel the same way about this game as CU fans do about CSU -- "why do we play them every year", "we have nothing to gain and everything to lose", "why can't we do better than home-and-home deals with ECU", "we already play four North Carolina teams in the ACC, there's no recruiting advantage to scheduling another OOC". ECU has a nice big stadium that's road-trippable from our alumni bases, but hell, it's the east coast -- almost everything is road-trippable from our alumni bases.
2. In general, I'm not a fan of hearing about football games cancelled or rescheduled due to weather. Weather is part of the game and part of the fan experience. That being said, if there's a legitimate safety risk to players, of course move the game.
3. On Monday, ECU agreed with VT's AD to decide on Wednesday how to handle the game. Then, on Tuesday (4 days before the game) ECU unilaterally cancels the VT game, citing concern traveling inland and up into the 'mountains' of Virginia. Instead, they're heading to Florida a week early to prep for their conference opener with USF. Count me firmly as a Hokie in #1 above -- I hope this BS kills the series for good.
4. I hope all the East Carolina players and their families, hell, everyone in the affected area, make it through this safely. I won't cry if the Pirates are forced to cancel Saturday's practice over bad weather in Florida though.
5. There's a decent chance VT gets bowl eligible even without this win and the loss of one game against a weak opponent likely has negligible impact on preparation for conference play. So, in the end, it probably doesn't matter for the Hokies.
6. TBD, but it looks like fans are eating the ticket costs.
7. I can't imagine this game getting rescheduled. The only open date we have left is the week before Georgia Tech, and our AD works like hell to schedule that extra time to prep for the Yellow Jackets triple option (which has always given Bud Foster's defense fits).

Where is "East Carolina" anyway? I've heard of North Carolina and even South Carolina, but not this East Carolina. Is it new?

"something, something... further east than any other D1 school in either Carolina..."

edit: I don't think that's accurate, actually. UNC-Wilmington is D1

OTOH Kelly did build...

Oops, just looked it up: I thought Kelly was HC at UNH before going to UO as OC.

Nope. He went from OC @ UNH to OC @ UO, so the question of whether or not he is actually capable of building a program up at any level really is an open one.

Schools who lose games because of weather should be given all options with respect to making it up-Last year's Georgia Tech team (5-6 but lost a game because of Hurricane Irma) should have gotten a bowl bid.

ECU is in Greenville, NC. Basically in the east, central part of the state, almost due east of Raleigh
Carolina is correct. My ex-wife worked on her masters there when I was stationed at Camp Lejeune. They have an enrollment of 29,000 (3rd largest in North Carolina) and are in the AAC. They kind of fit in the same category as CSU in regards to P5 affiliation. The only reason they aren't is because they didn't do it right back when the major conferences were forming up 40+ years ago. There might be some history there I am not aware of, but that was my impression in the 90's.

They had a pretty nice run with Steve Logan as the HC from 92-02 (67-55) including David Gerrard (future pro-bowler with Jacksonville) as their QB. Skippy Holtz was 38-27 and then Ruffin McNeil was 35-24, but no real signature wins. They haven't been as good since. Their current coach is 6-18, which is probably why they are completely off your radar.

In that period I remember that with the size of their stadium and good fan support to go along with the level of football they were playing, that the Big East was considering them for expansion if they wanted to keep things together as a football conference -- but that conference got absolutely raided and it no longer made sense to play football.
