Just curious, what rule would you like to see in that situation? I don't like it either.
What sucks is - you fumble at the 1, it’s still your ball at the one. You fumble at the 1 but it rolls into the end zone and out the side, the other team gets the ball on the 20...that sucks! I really think that that rule is so obtuse that if they changed it to “a fumble out of the end zone results in maintaining possession at the 2.5 yrd line” people would be cool with that. It’s almost a penalty worse than targeting/face mask.

I guess but then you’re making conflicting rules about what the back of the end zone means.
