Up next on our stroll through the No. 5's: Roman Hollowell ...

What Roman Hollowell lacked in size (5'6", 165-pounds), he made up for in heart. A four-year letterman (1998-2001), Hollowell led the team in both punt returns and kickoff returns in 2000 and 2001. While Hollowell is not as famous as the returners who preceded him (Ben Kelly) and succeeded him (Jeremy Bloom), he did have his moments. Hollowell did have three punt returns for touchdowns, including a game-changer against Missouri in 2001 - CU at Missouri, 2001

And who could forget OOOOO .... CCCCC .... Oliver!

As a freshman on the 1986 team which is best known for taking down Nebraska for the first time in 17 years, O.C. Oliver led the team in rushing, with 668 yards on 136 carries. After his freshman campaign, Oliver was over-shadowed by more talented players, finishing his career with 817 yards, just 149 yards and one touchdown in his final three seasons.

O.C. Oliver was also the player who passed for Colorado's only touchdown in the 20-10 victory against Nebraska (note who is the first player down the field to congratulate Lance Carl on his touchdown catch) ...

Because of his contributions to the team, it was probably only fitting that Bill McCartney put O.C. Oliver into the game in Oliver's last game at Folsom Field. A rout against Kansas State, Oliver scored a touchdown against the Wildcats. 1990 - Colorado v. Kansas State - Passing the Torch

And finally, Herchell Troutman (I trust you are already familiar with the work of one Rodney Stewart).

Herchell Troutman was a four-year letterman (1994-97). Another small back (5'7", 190-pounds) who did big things, Troutman led the Buffs in rushing three times, becoming just the sixth back in Colorado history to accomplish that feat. Though he never went over 1,000 yards in a season, Troutman was effective, completing his career fifth on the all-time CU rushing chart, with 2,487 yards and 21 touchdowns. Troutman was also effective catching the ball out of the backfield, finishing with 725 career receiving yards. In all, counting some return yardage, Troutman finished his CU career third on the all-time All-Purpose Yards list, behind only Eric Bieniemy and Byron "Whizzer" White (some pretty fair company).

Amongst his many highlights, Troutman had 100 yards and a touchdown in being named the Offensive MVP of the 1996 Cotton Bowl - Colorado v. Oregon - "The 'Forgotten' Cotton Bowl

Ok thanks, I couldn't remember the relation, but knew they all were.

One of my fondest memories was meeting and getting Dick Anderson's autograph. I have met, known, and am even friends with a lot of former buffs. The highlight of the ones I've met was Dick Anderson.

We were at Misty's, which is a big sports bar in Lincoln the night before the 94 CU/NU game. This place is a huge draw for fans the night before the game. The band comes through and everybody goes wild.
There were a good number of buff fans, and my dad (being a former player himself), pointed out a table and told me that a Super bowl champion was sitting at it. It was Dick Anderson. I went over and had him sign a Misty's paper placemat, which I still have to this day. That was the highlight of that trip because the next day was a nightmare.:bang:

Speedy needs to lead us to a bowl this year and then I'll have him as our best #5. Right now, it's a toss up.

Wow, this is a toughie. I call it a 4 way tie:
Stickland was a DB that WRs and RBs feared (just ask D Sproles)
Pez was able to call the same trap play over and over again against NU, and avoid botching the handoff
CJ quarterbacked the most important win in CU history
And I give honorable mention to MM just because he is one of my favorite Buffs of all time.

How's that for making the tough call?
 
Bobby P was the perfect QB for the system and the talent on the 2001 team. Under any other circumstances, I don't think he would have done as well. He sold the play action as well as any QB I've ever seen. BUT - he was a JUCO transfer, not a guy who chose CU out of high school and stayed with the program all 5 years. I have a hard time assigning the best to ever wear a number to him based on that.

CJ was the QB for two of the most famous CU games of all time. He led the team to the victory in the Orange Bowl and was the guy who scored on 5th down in Missouri. BUT - he wasn't even the starter most of the time. It's hard to say he was the best to ever wear the number when he wasn't the best at his position. And, he left the team before using up all his eligibility. I know his reasons for doing that were sound, and he's a Buff through and through, but that fact is a mark against him.

Strickland was a beast. I think they're still trying to dig Sproles out of the hole Strickland plugged him into.

Really, really tough one, but I'll go with Strickland.
 
I am going with Strickland, but nobody is mentioning Big play Monteilh. He is the one who caught the last second TD pass to beat KSU in 2004.

folsom went pretty nuts on that day.
 
I'm going with CJ - even though he didn't get much PT, he always made the most of it, was a real leader, and obviously had the respect of the entire team. We don't have a National Championship without him.

He played a lot in mop up duty in 89. In 90 Hagan had a bad shoulder against Mizzou and he played well, and then went Hagan went down in the Orange bowl, CJ was MVP.

Talk about being finicky, holy ****.

Tough one but I'm gonna go with CJ because he was teh QB on the national title team.
 
Strickland.

While Pesavento was the QB on that Big 12 Championship team, he had a pretty pedestrian season overall. The trio of RBs and Daniel Graham carried that offense.

He was efficient though. Didn't make too many mistakes that you saw more from Hodge the next year. Of course the O-line also helped with that.

True. I just think you could have plugged in several QBs into that offense and it would have thrived. The struggles of Hodge were mostly on him and partly on a mediocre receiving corps.
