Pac-12 Media Day 2023

Here's another classic from GK.

George Kliavkoff: "What we've seen is the longer we wait for the media deal, the better our options get."

— Max Olson (@max_olson) July 21, 2023

Once again, CU hasn't left yet because there is no reason to leave until they actually see what the numbers look like. CU automatically becomes a Tier 1 brand in the Big 12. That conference will wait until CU decides they are ready, give them a full share of media revenue and welcome them with open arms if the time comes.
I honestly believe the numbers/exposure will never eclipse the BIG12's deal.
Because of that I'm anxious for them to move and stop this nonsense. It's a delay of the inevitable.

I'm all for your passion on the subject, but what you believe is irrelevant, nor is it based on anything more than speculation from fringe media personalities who also know nothing. There is no rush in any of this.

If Oregon, Washington, Utah, ASU and Arizona aren't making moves, why do you think CU should?

Was it? I thought that was after UT and OU announced they were leaving when everyone in the industry was saying the Big 12 was assuredly dead
USC and UCLA announced they were leaving several weeks beforehand. The Big XII made their "open for business" comment and people online suggested PAC schools should join the Big XII. Then GK made his ridiculous "we might go shopping there" comment about the Big XII, coming across as a bullied kid who takes out his frustration by attacking an even weaker kid (XII) while never saying a single thing about the bully who actually beat him up (B1G).

Radio silence and poor PR/narrative creation aside…. I am thoroughly unimpressed by Kliavkoff.

He seems like a mid-tier manager or possibly low-end director at best. How he has risen to the level of pay and seniority with those presentation and speaking skills is beyond me

Oh geez...the inevitable inclusion question...don't care today is about football. Interesting that GK mentions it will be difficult to raise funds for the Olympic sports in the future.

Seen better at the G5 level.

I agree with everything you said, but ask, is there a drop dead date where CU no longer believes the P12-2 will ever get a deal? At some point, enough time passes where the failure to give numbers leaves CU no choice. I have no idea when that might be.

I don't think there is a possibility of the Pac 12 not getting a deal of some kind done. I think there is likely a deal on the table, but it's below what the conference believes is FMV and/or contains more streaming than they'd like, hence the continued waiting game.

If you believe most of the ITB propaganda, they probably have a deal on the table where each school gets ~$25m/year, which might be acceptable for most of the conference in order to stay together and remain flexible for the next round, but they are waiting for the absolute best deal possible, $$$ and visibility.

IMO, if there were zero bidders and no deal in the ballpark, CU and others would have already left for the Big 12.

I thought GK told you to not read too much into that.

The B12 nutters were pushing a Big12 "deadline" a few months ago, but that nonsense has quieted down. CU immediately becomes brand #1 in the B12 so the B12 sits and waits until CU decides what CU is going to do.

Cannot blame Prime in any way for missing this event.

Outside of the fact that streaming it is a joke for what he is trying to do it is completely irrelevant. If he had to miss something for his surgery this is it.

Who does media day serve? A few hardcore fans who already know anything about their teams that is going to come up and who aren't really going to get anything of significance from the other teams.

The biggest audience for media day is the press but this is mainly the "legacy" press. Local newspapers, maybe some sportstalk radio, local TV affiliates. But this isn't really of any significance because any of the information presented by the schools is going to be shared electronically by the AD media relations departments. Need an interview with a kid from XYZ University, send an email and within 48 hours the reporter is on Zoom along with a having a data file on the kid sent to him ahead of time.

The recruits don't pay any attention to this stuff, zero, same with the future recruits or kids who would transfer. Donors and fans would rather have a local event.

What matters instead? Being on ESPN for your spring scrimmage, being on YouTube and IG with immediate image pieces, being in the new media that young people follow. What Adam has to say is far more important to our program than what Wilner has to say.

Prime knows what he is doing, shows how much CU was out of touch before he got here.

We downplayed the Spring scrimmage almost discouraging fans from showing up, we avoided the new media, and we got ignored. Now kids all over the country are posting it when they get a CU offer or visit, it's cool to be associated with the Buffs now.

Unfortunately maybe like the PAC itself, PAC12 media day is a relic of a bygone age of college football.
