Polls, rankings and bowl projections

We SHOULD beat UCLA. But let's face it, our wins, based on our opponents losses, do not instill much confidence in any of them being considered 'quality'. While UCLA may not be good, either are the nubs, the ewes, or the kitties. Is UCLA worse that any of those three? I don't think so.
I would definitely take Nebraska over them with Martinez at QB.

I mean, UCLA is 0-3 and lost to two G5 teams by multiple scores each, at home, and was blown out by OU. It’s not a stretch to say they are just as bad as anyone we’ve played.

My Pac-12 rankings:

1. Washington
2. Stanford
3. Utah
4. Cal
5. CU
6. Oregon
7. ASU
8. WSU
9. USC
10. OSU
11. Arizona
12. UCLA

I’d argue that CSU is the most indicative of this team. I think for NU they were over jacked, super emotional, the coaches (specifically Hagan and Chiv) were probably a little miopic (at first). For NH, I think they were normal college kids and as much as we’d like to think they were totally locked on going into that game, they probably weren’t. Also, if the 1st team stays in, MM throws his good guy persona out the window, we put 70 on those guys.

UCLA is a total mess. If this game isn’t over by the end of the third I’ll be disappointed. ASU has some talent but gave up the same # of yds on the ground we put on UNH...311. This game is def winnable. I’m looking to be 5-0 going to the Collesium to hopefully beat a very beatable condom team.

have a chance to win every game on the schedule with exception of maybe uw on road.....do we do that ...probably not but have a punchers chance...pac is weak

FYI - this is how ESPN saw our game yesterday...

21. Colorado

i

Week 3 result:
Defeated New Hampshire 45-14
What's next: vs. UCLA (Sept. 28, 9 p.m. ET, FS1)
Colorado's defense flexed its muscles in a blowout of an FCS opponent, limiting New Hampshire to 42 rushing yards and forcing three turnovers with five sacks. The Buffaloes are 3-0 for the second straight season and get a bye week before opening Pac-12 play against the 0-3 Bruins.

Agree w Joel here. It won’t happen because it’s not like the AP poll is controlled by “college football”, but it does a serious disservice to a lot of teams due to the irrelevant preseason rankings creating huge bias. It’s be great if there were no rankings until like week 8 or whenever the CFP rankings come out.

I sort of agree. But I'd like a poll after week one - it helps feed my fanaticism and who I want to watch. And who I want to see get beat. I wouldn't have rooted so hard for San Diego State last night if ASU wasn't ranked. And that Wisc loss wouldn't be as fun if they weren't ranked so high. But preseason polls are bull**** - it's why Sparty was still in after their first two games.

The coach's poll is worse than the AP in this regard.

Yes and no. Coaches don’t get to watch every game (neither do media members) but they at least know what good football teams look like and have informed opinions. Many in the media have regional/conference bias and that lingers for a long time throughout the season.

How do you put BYU in but not put Cal in? o_O
BYU actually went on the road and beat a very good top 10 team. Just because Cal beat BYU does not mean they would have beaten Wisconsin. I think people are going a little overboard with the circular hierarchy logic.

I think I'd call USC a tossup at worst right now. They don't scare me at all. If there was a year to miss the trees and Donald Duck, this is it-UW is good, but that offensive line is AWFUL.

All I'm saying is that Cal beat BYU in Provo and Cal is undefeated. It would be like if Washington was ranked higher than LSU this week when UW lost to Auburn in Atlanta and LSU beat Auburn in Auburn. What happens on the field has to matter. Scoreboard has to matter.

I agree to a certain extent, but the rankings should be based on what teams do in their games, not what their opponents have done in other games. Hypothetical... If Arkansas beats or keeps it close with Auburn next week, does that make CU equal to or better than Auburn? Obviously not, but that’s what that logic would say.

I have no issue w Cal being ranked and if CU is, Cal probably should be too, but BYU beat Wisconsin; Cal did not.

It's probably not fair, but Wisconsin might not be as good as years past and Cal's offense has been putrid. East Carolina, a team that lost at home to NC A&T, looked way more impressive against UNC than Cal did.

I wouldn't rank them because of how average they looked against North Carolina (who followed that game up by getting destroyed by garbage ECU).

I'm not talking about how opponents of opponents do. That's when it gets ridiculous. I'm talking about whether to rank Cal over BYU. Cal beat BYU in their building and is undefeated. And based on what we've seen on the field, why should I assume that Wisconsin is that good of a win? I watched that game. Wisconsin is slow.

It's hard early in the season like this - Cal might deserve to be ranked but I don't believe for a second that they're one of the best 25 teams in the country.
