Ralphie V - Retired - Thanks, Blackout!

Fire up the hotline to Independence Community College. I hear they have a great buffalo who is looking to transfer but there are some questions surrounding her eligibility.

“It's no surprise that a skittish steer would react to a perceived threat by charging”

The steer was threatened by the tiny bulldog? Interesting. I agree though retire Bevo, a cow is a stupid mascot anyways.

I understand that a new Ralphie needs training.

I'm not understanding why that training didn't start early enough to have uninterrupted Ralohie runs on game days.

Only Ralphie that I've ever known. And yes, coolest mascot in sports (not sure there's a close 2nd).

2nd to Ralphie V is Ralphie 1-4 lol. All other mascots are meh. Unless someone starts bringing out live tigers and running around the field with them CU will always be way ahead of everyone else.

PETA is merely being true to their purported cause. They don’t have to be informed of the facts. The people who pay their bills expect them to say **** like this, so they do. I don’t blame them. I blame the dipshits who contribute to them.

She decided she didn't want to run slow anymore. Animals do have will power and the Ralphie program isn't funded to an extent to have one waiting in the wings. This isn't complicated.

This is where I struggle. Given the state of the football team, Ralphie is one of the best marketing tools that CU athletics has currently. Failure to invest here seems like a missed opportunity.

I'm also assuming that the most expensive part of raising and training a buffalo are the human resources, and that Universities use cheap/free student labor to keep those costs minimal.

It costs a bit to feed the animal, however the constraining factor would be training. You can't just take a full grown buffalo and run with it. It has to be trained from a young age so that gets used to the runners, harness, crowds, etc.. It just wouldn't be practical for the program to be simultaneously training two buffalo at the same time.

No doubt PETA makes a fool of itself over stuff like this. They lose credibility with rational thinking people. They become far less influential as a result.

The US and entire world is absolutely evil and disgusting when it comes to the treatment of animals, both in nature and agriculture. It is pathetic that animal rights is virtually ignored by society. Simple changes like the environment animals are raise and the methods of slaughter should be heavily regulated to make the consumption of meat more ethically sound.

Unfortunately, groups like PETA that could be in the forefront of this progress screw themselves over by demanding extreme immediate change and alienating the public with these kind of stunts. Most humane treatment of animals groups are run by (relative to society) extreme vegan types that can’t avoid a perspective that any consumption of animals should be forbidden and you’re part of the problem of you don’t agree.

These groups don’t seem to have a reasonable approach to taking small steps to fix the animal cruelty problem the best they can while we continue to live in a society that is not going to quit eating meat anytime soon. Thus, nothing changes.

I guess the main thing isn’t to just say **** PETA and be done with it but to consider some organizations or certifications that might do good the right way. These have basic (pretty minimal) requirements for space per animal, requirements for slaughter/day of slaughter.

Some certifications are below:

A good article about all the labels you see on eggs/milk/meat and their meaning.
I hope some people take a look and try more than not at all to eat more ethically handled animals.
