Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Anxiously awaiting the big meal, a couple bit of news on the recruiting front.

1) Women's Golf announced a couple young women have signed their NLI's to join the team for next season (http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2016/11/22/cu-womens-golf-announces-two-nlis.aspx).

Welcome to Alisha Lau (Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, JN Burnett Secondary High School) and Katie Stribling (Tustin, California, Foothill High School)!

2) Per I assume her club team, looks like lacrosse picked up another 2019 commitment in Katie Haley, a midfielder with True Illinois Lacrosse's Elite National Travel 2019 team and Maine South High School in Park Ridge Illinois.

Welcome and congrats to her!

More on her from what looks like own recruitment webpage - http://www.katiehaley2019.com/

Based on the below Instagram, looks like Buff soccer have once again gone "down under" (in this case New Zealand) and snagged a player, forward Martine (Marty) Puketapu***. Congrats and welcome to her!
(Since she's already signed, assume this means she may be coming to Boulder this coming semester, so will have more time to work and integrate with the team and training staff!)

***Note- not 100% sure she's coming to play soccer, but I'd be pretty sure (99.???%) she is since- (1) she looks like a VERY serious player (Age group National team experience, etc.), (2) She tagged CUbuffsoccer in her post and (3) I recognize at least 3 current Buff players welcoming her in the instagram post.

Edit - Just noticed the below tweet- based on timing, another strong indication Ms. Puketapu is probably a new Buff!

Two days ago Puketapu started for the NZ full national team (aka the "Football Ferns") in a 2-0 home victory over Thailand. It seems she is one of the young players being looked at for the squad that will be attempting to qualify for the next World Cup.

I don't want to give a name until it's "officially official," but I think a fantastic young player from Australia also plans to join Buffs Soccer in 2017. These two from NZ and AU will be adding a lot to the Buffs both in talent and in being great people/team mates. Although the majority of Buff players currently on the roster, and being recruited for the future, are Americans, having a few girls from other countries is a terrific experience for all concerned IMO. It's great to have friends from around the world...especially with the most international sport of all. Kudos to the coaches for recruiting them and for the two players for having the guts and ambition to come play D-I soccer in America. Having been to AU and NZ on more than one occasion I can say that in some ways it really doesn't seem that far...get on a plane in LA, watch a couple of movies, take a nap, and voila...you're in Sydney or Auckland in approx. 15 hours non-stop. And if you want to be treated like a king/queen and have really good airplane food even when flying "coach" class....take Qantas. Go Buffs in 2017! #strongertogether

If I am reading this correctly, Puketapu is in the starting again in the second game v Thailand which is going on currently in NZ.

Now on RichKern : 2018 setter 5'10" Jenna Ewert from California commit to Colorado. She has been in the USA National Youth A1 training group so is probably pretty good.
Update on Ms. Ewert .... Prepvb has come out with their list of the Top 50 for the class of 2018 and Jenna is one of 16 setters in that 50. Sorry, no link, as it's a paid subscription site. The list is not ranked. Just alphabetical within position group.

As with football, the start of the lone soccer signing period is coming up in a few days, so a few changes one way or the other are always possible/ probable. Topdrawersoccer (TDS) is no longer showing earlier verbal commit Kayla Cannon coming to Boulder (http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/coll...women/colorado/clgid-205/tab-commitments#tabs). Per a search of their player database, they now have her going to Long Beach State.

Assuming TDS is accurate, best wishes to her as a 49er.

Looks like the soccer team has received another commitment from the class of '19 from Amaya Gonzalez (M - Slammers FC) in California.

Just wanted to mention that I noticed (while updating the list of soccer commits in the OP before Next Wednesday's start of the official 2017 class signing period) that not much info had been put in this thread re 2019 commit Amaya Gonzalez, so wanted to add what (little) I could find -

High school stats- Per Maxpreps (http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/ama...gendersport/girls-soccer-stats.htm#year=15-16), Ms. Gonzalez impressively last season led her Downey High Shool team AS A FRESHMAN in goals, assists, and (therefore of course) points (respectively- 12/11/35) .

Looks like she was the only freshman selected to her local newspaper's (Long Beach Press-Telegram) "Dream Team" for last season (2nd team) per http://www.presstelegram.com/sports...-team-tavia-leachman-named-player-of-the-year . (Only 2 sophomores were even included in the team.)

Looks like her ECNL (I believe the top U.S. club league?) team is very good, as they are 9-2 as I write this (per https://tgs.totalglobalsports.com/public/TeamProfile.aspx?t=2815&oid=9) . (Unfortunately, in my VERY quick look at the website, I couldn't find any freely accessible individual info on her.)

Topdrawersoccer (https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/amaya-gonzalez/pid-89920) has her rated at 3 stars at this (obviously relatively EARLY in her soccer development ) point . (Note- they don't show her Buff commitment yet, but @soccercbg does.)

From an instagram post she made yesterday (With a #GoBuffs, CU shirt and a couple current Buffs commenting), looks like women's track and cross country may have received a commit in distance runner Olivia Brooks, currently running for Summit High School in Bend, Oregon.

Her results to date in High School-
Track -
http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=5841330#/L0
(Heading into her senior season, looks like she has already won the 5A Oregon State Championships in both the 1500M and 3000M twice, both as a junior and sophomore. Showing good range, she was also part of her team's State Champs winning 4X400M team as a sophomore.)

Cross Country - http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=5841330#/L0
(She ended her high school career this past December as a THREE time 5A State Champion after finishing "only" 2nd as a freshman. She also finished 43rd as a senior and 38th as a junior in the prestigious NXN National cross country race.)

And just after posting in another thread about the lacrosse team starting its conference season, notice that it looks like it also picked up a new class of 2019 commitment.

Welcome and congrats to Lexi Leader!

From what little I can find, she is a midfielder from the Columbus Academy in New Albany, Ohio, and the Midwestern Force Lax club.

Based on a tweet he recently made, looks like men's track and field has picked up a commitment for next season (2017) from hurdler/ sprinter Nathan Hoy, currently running for Cedar Falls Hills High School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Congrats and welcome to him!

High School results - http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=8583616#/L0
(He won the 400M Hurdle 4A State title last season as a junior, and was also the lead-off leg for his team's state championship-winning 4X400M relay team.)

Looks like volleyball just got some good news!

(Couldn't find anything ID'ing the newest Buff commit yet on Rich Kern or via my standard Twitter or IG searches, but hopefully/ normally we'll see something within the next day or two (especially if it's a U.S. player).)

Based on the below tweet she made, looks like the newest volleyball commit (as indicated in the above post's tweet, 2018 class) is 6'2" middle blocker Alexandra (Allie) Moger, from Lovejoy High School in Lucas (looks to be a suburb northeast of Dallas?), Texas, and the MadFrog Volleyball club***.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I could find about her -
High School stats - http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/allie-moger/CGVcYYGOEeW-8KA2nzwbTA/gendersport/volleyball-stats.htm
(Looks like Maxpreps ended up ranking her team #10 in the very loaded state of Texas, with them making it all the way to the state championship semi-finals in 5A.)

Highlight reel (looks to be from last year's club season -

Prior commitment - Per a Flicka post I found made by Mad Frog, Looks like she was formerly committed to Loyola Marymount U. (of California). From what I 1st read on the volleytalk board, their head coach left this off-season to go coach at Georgia.

(***Although they won't overlap as Buffs, looks like there will be a long-term continuity between CU and the Mad Frog club, as I believe that was also next year Buff senior Stephanie Shadley's club. From a Facebook post, looks like CU is also sending some coaches to present the setter portion of an elite positional-specific camp MadFrog is hosting this summer.)

Per the below tweet, looks like volleyball gets it's 2nd commitment of the month and, Per Richkern.com, it's class of 2019 6'0" outside hitter/ (Edit- also lists herself as an) Opposite (AKA Rightside) hitter Jill Schneggenburger, who plays for Beckman HS in Irvine CA and the A4 Volleyball Club.

Welcome and congrats to her!

What I found regarding her-
Player's Profile page - https://www.captainu.com/Volleyball/2019/JillSchneggenburger
Note- contains links to many highlight videos in Youtube. Just for a taste, latest of those highlights is-

Note- From that highlight she's evidently already playing on her club's U18 team.

Per http://cifss.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/2016-G-VBALL-ALL-CIF.pdf , looks like she was the only sophomore this past season to be named to the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Southern Section Division 2 Team.

The local newspaper (http://www.ocvarsity.com/articles/mater-85894-edison-dei.html) named her to the 2nd Team All (Orange) County Team, the only sophomore named to any of the 1st 3 teams . (I would assume Orange County is a pretty strong volleyball area, so an impressive achievement.)

A little more confirmation on Ms. Moger's commitment -

Well, the volleyball team is definitely filling up the future roster, as per the below it looks like they have the the 3rd straight known Olympic sport commitment- another one for 2019. And, per richkern.com, the player is 6'5" middle blocker Alexia Kuehl, who plays at Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns Florida, and the InstinctJAX volleyball club.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I could find about her-

Wow- the volleyball coaches must want to go on vacation, as they are filling up the 2019 class QUICK! (No indication who the player is yet, but this obviously just happened.)

Per a tweet she just made, looks like the newest Buff volleyball commit is probably 2019 6'1" outside hitter/ right-side hitter (per Maxpreps) or middle blocker (per berecruited) Elissa Alcantara . She is, like prior commit Ms. Kuehl, from Florida, in this case Tampa Catholic High School and the Tampa United Volleyball Academy.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I could find out for her-

1) ~4 minute Highlight video -

Looks like the soccer team has its 1st high school class of 2020 commitment.

I have no info on who it is yet, but it often takes a few days (or more, which often indicates an international player) before we hear anything.

1st, Not sure if the below tweet means a 2nd 2020 soccer commit, or just another tweet about the 1st one from yesterday?!?

____________________________________________________________________

In any case, did identify the 1st known soccer commit for the freshman class of 2020- both the below tweet and topdrawersoccer.com has Forward Audrey Sexson from Mahtomedi HS, Mahtomedi Minnesota, and the Minnesota Thunder Academy Club, as the newest Buff commit. (Edit- topdrawersoccer lists her as a midfielder, so I'll also include that position in the OP list of soccer commits.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

What little I could find for her-
High school stats- http://www.mshsl.org/mshsl/showstats.asp?actnum=414&school=269
(Looks like she was already, as a freshman, co-leader in scoring for her team, earning 8 goals and 6 assists in 18 matches.)

topdrawersoccer.com profile- https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/audrey-sexson/pid-102279/tab-articles
(No star rating listed for her yet. In the "Soccer/ Academic Honors" tab, they do note she already been part of ODP Regional and State Teams, so looks to be an accomplished young player. (If like me you had no idea what ODP stood for, it's an Olympic Development Program ran by US Youth Soccer (http://www.usyouthsoccer.org/aboutus/WhatIsYouthSoccer/).))

I think that 2nd tweet is referring to a 2nd 2020 commitment. If I find out who I'll post it, but Aztec will likely beat me to it!

For some reason my earlier post didn't "post," but am pretty sure that the 2nd tweet about a 2nd 2020 commit means it's an additional player. Also, the internationals rarely commit before the current season...and sometimes late and just before August practice begins, so I doubt the newer 2020 commit is an international player. But I think we may see another international commit for 2017 by August. And a great one too. Just a hunch.

By following a comment she made on an Instagram post of a new photo of Buff great Nikki Marshall on a Champions Center wall, looks like the 2nd 2020 soccer commitment is forward Shyra James, who plays for the Liverpool Soccer Club in La Mesa California, and Preuss HS (which looks to be a charter school affiliated with UC- San Diego) in La Jolla.

Congrats and welcome to her!

What little I could find about her-

Topdrawersoccer page (not much detail in there yet) - https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/shyra-james/pid-110764

She was named to the All-Tournament Team (2002 girls) after the "2017 US Youth Soccer ODP Region IV Championships" held this January (per http://regioniv.usyouthsoccer.org/a..._us_youth_soccer_odp_region_iv_championships/) .

Edit- Her commitment is also now showing up at topdrawersoccer.com.
