Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

Lacrosse, in addition to signing the six 2021/22 class verbal commits already known to this thread, also announced it had signed one I wasn't aware of, midfielder Katie McLean, a midfielder from Lebanon, New Jersey, who plays prep ball at Voorhees HS and club with DEWLAX Girls Lacrosse.

Again, OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!!!

Next up as I catch up on 2021 frosh Buffs that hadn't been known about until CU announced it, is a couple international men's golfers, who join the one (Californian) commit known to this thread previously. They are:
  • Aussie Jack Holland, who attends Haileybury in Keysborough (looks to be a suburb of Melbourne), Victoria.
  • German Frederik Eisenbeis, who attends Gymnasium Rodenkirchen in Cologne, Germany.
Again, OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to them!!!

The CU Buff release about the 3 incoming freshman (as well as one transfer) - https://cubuffs.com/news/2020/11/12/edwards-adds-three-recruits-to-mens-golf-program.aspx

More on the 2 previously unknown golfers-

Jack Holland-

From the Buff release linked to above:
"
Holland, who is from Hampton, a coastal suburb of Melbourne in the state of Victoria in southeast Australia, has recorded several top amateur victories and sports a career low round of 7-under 65 (which he recorded as a 16-year old). In 2019, he captured both the Associated Public Schools/AGSV State Championship and the Independent (Australian) Schools state final, winning the latter by five strokes. He placed fifth in the Victorian Boys Championship and tied for seventh in the Victorian Junior Open. In 2018, he also claimed the Independent Schools state final (won in a playoff) as well as the Rossdale Open Amateur.

"Obviously, Boulder is a wonderful city and its scenic area and beautiful weather all year round definitely attracted me to the college," Holland said. "Even though I wasn't able to visit the school myself, I was still extremely pleased with the online tours, the amazing buildings of the college and atmosphere of the town.

"Being a PAC-12 college, the fierce competition was a big reason for my selection of Colorado," he added. "Facing off against the likes of Stanford, UCLA and Arizona State is awesome just thinking about and I can't wait to start competing and hopefully winning over these renowned college programs."

Edwards on Holland: "Jack is a rising star in Australia. He is a near-perfect student and has grown up developing his game on one of the very elite golf courses in the world – Royal Melbourne. Australia has long been one of the world's best at producing elite-level talent and Jack is on that same track to high-level competitive golf."

"

A 41+ minute podcast interview with him -

His Facebook commitment post (from last April)-

Frederik Eisenbeis

From the Buff announcement-
"
Eisenbeis has compiled a most impressive resume in amateur play in his native Germany, including a victory in the 2019 Berlin Open Championship, where he turned in a 7-under par 281 and was one of two players in the field to shoot a pair of sub-70 scores. He finished atop the leaderboard in the qualifiers for the German Junior Championship in both 2018 and 2019. This past summer, after a rough start he placed fifth in the German National Boys Championship (78-68-67—213, -1), as he had the low score over the last two rounds (the only player in the field with two scores in the 60s over the final 36 holes). He was fourth in the 2020 German Junior National (213, -3) and 12th in the 2020 German Men's National Championship (also 213, -3). He also tied for 21st in the 2019 German National Amateur (open to all ages), finishing with a 2-under 286 score, and was 25th in the same event this year (215, -1). He has a career-best score of 8-under 64.

"CU was the best choice for me because it gives me the opportunity to compete at the highest level of golf combined with a great school," Eisenbeis said. "I've talked to Yannik about CU, and he spoke very highly of it which only made my decision easier. CU just seems like a great fit for us Germans!"

Edwards on Eisenbeis: "Frederik is a highly-regarded player on the German National Team. He has played at a high level all over Europe. He is a high-achieving student who spent one year of high school in Florida. Germans have been a great fit at CU and we expect Frederik to extend that legacy."

Since I just posted about men's golf commits, wanted to mention before I forget- it looks like the women's team, at least as of now, may be one of those rare Buff teams (at least since we started this thread) that doesn't have a freshman class, as there are no known commits for the class of 2021. (Although, individual sports do sometimes have later commits. some who we don't know about until they pop up on the roster.)

Based on roster size, this no freshman class possibility isn't that unreasonable, as this year's roster is showing 10 on it right now, with only 2 seniors, while the last 2 years' rosters only had 8 on them. Assume there's also a possibility that, if it works for the student-athlete, coaches and athletic department, one or both of the seniors could also choose to come back next season.

Last but certainly not least, the teams which usually have the most unknown commitments (outside of skiing where I always just wait for the roster additions), men's and women's track and field and cross country.

In this post, the two women who weren't known to this thread before the signing period.
  • Multi-event and jump athlete Annie Grinde, who will be joining CU from some obscure and exotic spot called Boulder CO (Boulder HS).
  • hurdler and sprinter Emma Pollak, from Kent Washington (Kentwood HS)
Again, OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to them!

Their high school results:
Annie Grinde- https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=12317196&L=0
Emma Polak- https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=12871040&L=0

Re Ms. Pollak
Looks like she was named All-American after finishing 4th in the 400M Hurdles (15-16 age division) at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in 2019 - :https://www.kentreporter.com/sports...-usatf-national-junior-olympic-championships/

Next, there's a pretty good number of men's track and field and, in some cases, cross country 2021 frosh class commits which weren't known about previously. Because of the number of signees, I'm going to break it into 2 parts. Part 1:
  • distance runner Alex Baca From Gunnison, CO;
  • distance runner Zack Gacnik from Conifer, CO;
  • middle distance and distance runner Ben Greene, who is from Falmouth, Maine.

(I can't find a Buff tweet confirming Mr. Greene's signing, but both the article linked to in the above tweet, and the fact MileSplit is showing him as a Buff commit, makes me relatively confident it's safe to list him as a commitment here. Still, I'd consider his commitment in the unconfirmed category right now.)

Again, welcome and congrats to them!

Ben Greene:

Part 2 of 2 for the men's track and field and (in 2 cases) cross country team commits I didn't know about before seeing their commitment tweets on the teams' twitter account:
  • distance runner Josh Medina, from Alamosa, CO.
  • distance runner James Overberg, from Lafayette (Centaurus HS), CO
  • multi-event (decathlon outdoors, heptathlon indoors) student-athlete John Swabik, who's from Sherman, New York.
Again, OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to them!

Looks like there might be (???) a late addition to next season's soccer team. (Quick initial search didn't turn up anything.)

I still haven't found the identity to the commit for next season tweeted about in the last post, and soccer now evidently has another incoming 2021 player I can't identify at this time. (Note- I am putting this in this thread, but assume the incoming Buff could be a transfer rather than an incoming freshman.)

______________________________________________________________________________

One thing I hadn't mentioned here which could be affecting the soccer recruiting for next season (both in player needs and/ or scholarship $'s available, as well as possibly (???) re-commiting)- so far to date in this thread I (and topdrawersoccer.com) had the Buffs with 11 freshmen members anticipated for this year's roster (10 of which were formally announced in the initial class announcement at https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/11/14/soccer-sanchez-adds-10-for-2020.aspx). However, in the current roster, there are "only" 7 freshmen listed.
  • The 3 freshmen who were in the late-2019 class announcement who aren't on the roster are goaltender Rachael Black (from Scottsdale), midfielder Addie Bundy (from Fort Collins) and defender Kendyll Fritts (from Laguna Niguel, Calif.).
  • The anticipated freshman that both topdrawersoccer and I had as a commit who was NOT included in the class announcement was defender Audrey Sexson (from Mahtomedi, Minnesota).
I just did VERY QUICK Google searches of these 4, and for the 3 that were in the class announcement, I didn't find any links that stated they've committed to and/ or are playing at any other college: Therefore, I won't consider them no longer Buffs for now, especially in this pandemic era where student-athletes (and students in general) are allowed to (understandably) opt out of going to school this academic year.

I am wondering if maybe one or both of these recent #CUin21 tweets might just be announcing one or two of the three original 2020 commits not on the roster have re-committed to playing with the Buffs starting in the fall 2021 season? Or, are some or all of them no longer going to be Buffs?

Re Audrey Sexson, I did find a roster page for her for this season at Wheaton College (in Wheaton, Illinois- https://athletics.wheaton.edu/sports/womens-soccer/roster/audrey-sexson/8097), so assume she will NOT be a Buff. (From their website, looks like Wheaton may not be playing at all this academic year.)

Best wishes to her, and of course the other 3 whether or not they end up in Boulder, in all their future endeavors.

This was already noted in the football thread, but since it obviously also matters to the men's track and field team, wanted to mention here that sophomore football safety Mark Perry, per the below tweet from track and field's sprints and hurdles coach, is now on the team's roster for this outdoor season.

Excited to see how he runs in a (much lighter than he's used to) Buff uniform!

(The 2 most recent examples I can think of of football players contributing in a significant way to track and field (both at the Pac 12 Outdoor Championships level) are Isaiah Oliver, who finished 4th in the decathlon in 2017 and 7th in 2016, and Davion Taylor, who finished 6th in 2018 in the 100M (running 10.60 in the finals (officially wind aided (2.9 MPH)).

Of course, the most obvious (to my admittedly non-historian brain) football-track and field Buff legend that comes to mind is the late great Cliff Branch, who still shows #1 in the CU record books in the 100M with a 10.0 (hand timed) mark in 1972 in the prelims of the NCAA Championships,)

Volleyball is able to formally announce 3 more 2021 Buffs.

(My guess is these 3 might be (at least initially) walk-ons, so couldn't be announced as part of the initial signing release last November. All 3 of these commitments were previously known about to this thread. For more from when their commitment was 1st known, see post #529 for Simka, #539 for Stepaniuk and 492-493 for Torstenson.

These 3, in addition to the 2 formally announced back in November (Campbell and Simpson), does complete the list of known 2021 vball Buffs known about here.)

Also, interesting to me that it sounds like, from the last sentence in the release I quoted below, it sounds like there's DEFINITELY another incoming student-athlete who will be announced in the summer. (I'd guess that might be a transfer?) Also, it sounds like other additions are also possible.

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to the 3 newest Buffs!

Release -

"
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team announced Thursday the addition of three future student-athletes, a middle blocker from Denver and two defensive specialists/liberos from Washington and Minnesota.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Bella, Emilea and Emma to the Buff family," said head coach Jesse Mahoney. "All three are talented volleyball players and students and will represent Colorado Volleyball well on the court and in the classroom. Along with Taylor Simpson and Jahara Campbell we expect great things from the 2021 class."

BELLA SIMPUS
Bella Simkus joins the Buffs from Denver East High School where she helped her team to a 20-7 record as a sophomore and a 10-14 mark as a junior. Simkus helped lead her team to state in just her second year playing volleyball. She was named All-Conference honorable mention as a sophomore and improved to All-Conference First Team her junior year.

"Bella is a long, lean explosive athlete with a ton of upside as a middle blocker," said Mahoney. 'She plays over 10 feet and has improved her game immensely over the last year. I'm excited to see her compete and learn from our current group of middles."
...

EMILEA STEPANIUK
Emilea Stepaniuk helped her team to a perfect 30-0 record her junior campaign and a 22-3 record as a sophomore. Both season the team finished as the 2A Washington State Champions. She also had a 23-6 record as a freshman, compiling a 85-9 prep record. She was named Second Team All-State and First Team All-League in both seasons as well.

"Emilea will add depth to an already deep libero/DS core within our program," said Mahoney. "She has great instincts and range as a defender and is a very natural platform passer. She's brings great energy to the floor and I'm excited to see her game progress at the collegiate level."
...

EMMA TORSTENSON
Emma Torstenson joins the Buffs from Minnesota where she has over 1,400 career digs, 146 aces and 183 assists for Northfield where she competes for her father. As a junior her team went 28-2 as she recorded 364 digs and 43 aces. During her underclassmen campaigns she went 24-7 and 28-3 with 408 digs as a sophomore and 340 as a freshman. She was honored by being named First Team All-State as a junior and three times was named to the All-Conference First Team. Competing for Mizuno Northern Lights Club she has three third place finishes at the AAU Nationals in Orlando.

During her senior season in the fall of 2020, Torstenson and her team went 13-0 without losing a single set. Torstenson had 52 aces and 216 digs.

"Emma comes from a great background having played for her father in high school and one of the top 18's club teams in the country at Northern Lights," said Mahoney. "She has all the tools we look for in a libero but what sets Emma apart is her ability to read the game at a high level – she makes plays look easy by being in the right spot at the right time. Emma is highly regarded as one of the premier liberos in the nation."
...

"We are still actively recruiting for the 2021 class and we will be announcing another addition to our roster this summer," added Mahoney.

"

Back in posts #579 and 580, there'd been a couple 2021 generic soccer commit tweets from the team, neither of which I was able to identify. Looks like 2 for that class have now been signed so can be announced by the team (see the tweet below).
(Note- Ms. Stodden is a transfer, so I'll put more info on her in the transfer thread.)
  • Hailey Stodden, a Defender/ midfielder from nearby Broomfield (and Broomfield HS) and the Univ. of Utah and
  • Isabella Grust, a goalie from Rancho Santa Fe, CA (and Torrey Pines HS).
OFFICIAL Welcome and congrats to them!

...

Grust, a Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., native, will join the Buffs after she graduates from Torrey Pines High School in the spring. The 5-9 goalkeeper has been playing with the San Diego Surf of the ECNL. She won the 2019 Girls U18/19 DA Golden Glove Award and helped her team to the DA National Championship game in 2019 (with future Buff teammates Jade Babcock-Chi and Shyra James). Grust was a part of the U15 USWGT player list and was part of the 2017/18 USWYNT hub.

Grust is currently ranked the No. 7 keeper in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer and is #73 in the IMG Academy 150.

Stodden and Grust add to a class that includes Ellen Jones (Glamorgan, UK), Hannah Duguid (Calgary, Alberta), Holly Hunter (Temecula, Calif.) and Phoenix Miranda (Honolulu, Hawaii).

I wonder if a goat tender is transferring. that would give them 4 goaltenders on the team and Hansen only being a junior

We now have confirmation of Mr. Greene's signing.

Again, OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to him!

Wanted to mention today is a BIG day in the recruiting calendar for almost all the CU Olympic sports (except for lacrosse***), as this is the 1st day coaches can have any contact (direct or indirect) with any of the freshman class of 2023, with the contact also potentially including verbal offers. (Assume this is probably the busiest recruiting-wise the coaches may EVER be, as the pandemic-caused ban on travelling to see student-athletes play live ended on June 1st.)

(***Lacrosse modified their recruiting rules earlier than the rest of the Olympic sports, and I believe continue to not allow contact with until September 1st of the student-athletes' junior years.)

Best wishes to all the Buff coaching staffs!

Per the below tweet and article linked to in it, looks like a relatively late addition to the men's track and field team for next season (although late is relatively common in this sport). He is Noah Bouchard, who competed for and attended Huntley Project HS in Worden, Montana. From the last link I edited a link to below, he is looking to be a multi-event athlete (indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon) in college, while also competing in the high jump and, possibly, 110M hurdles.

Welcome and congrats to him!

Direct link to article - https://www.kulr8.com/sports/huntle...ign=blox&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social
(Per the article, a very versatile athlete as, in addition to the accomplishments in track indicated in the below results, he was also all-state in basketball.)

His HS track and field results - https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=11809001&L=0
(His school competed in a smaller school division, but he still ranked state-wide overall in many events (per https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Division/Top.aspx?DivID=117598) - #1 in the 110M hurdles and high jump, #2 in the long jump,#8 in the triple jump and #12 in the javelin. )

Edit - Another article on his commitment, this one with a few quotes from the young man - https://billingsgazette.com/sports/...cle_38800da3-eda4-5d95-8b76-88e9c12d4741.html

If I'm understanding the below tweet, looks like men's golf has received a commitment from the Lone Star State for 2022.

Per a quick social media search, (none of the three sources I've found that lists golf commitments confirms this NEW news), looks like the newest Buff commit may be, per the below Instagram post, Tyler (Ty) Holbrook, who looks to be from Granbury, TX.

Assuming it is him- Welcome and congrats!

A couple resources I could find for him:

An American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) page - https://www.ajga.org/player/ty-holbrook

A Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) page - https://tournaments.tjgt.com/Public...Name=Holbrook&PlayerID=88669&TourSeasonID=215

As I mentioned in my last post from earlier today (#591), I couldn't find confirmation on the new men's golf commit noted there in any of the 3 webpages I found which try to list NCAA golf commits. However, the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) webpage (https://www.ajga.org/college-signings/2021-college-signees) does list a newer Buff women's golf commit for this coming academic year (2021/22)- Natalie Vo, who looks to have attended the Harker School in San Jose, California.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A little more I could find on her:

Her AJGA page (with results and ranking) - https://www.ajga.org/player/natalie-vo

An article from her school paper from last month after she won medalist honors while also captaining her team to the California Central Section (CCS) team Championship - https://harkeraquila.com/59249/uncategorized/boys-and-girls-golf-teams-win-ccs-championships/
(This article also notes she "recently committed to play golf at the University of Colorado Boulder".)

Also from her school paper, a human interest story from May - https://harkeraquila.com/58726/onlineexclusive/humans-of-harker-swinging-through-life/

Per the below tweet from Coach Mahoney, looks like the Buffs picked up a 2022 volleyball verbal commitment. And, per Rich Kern, and confirmed by the below tweet, it looks like it is 5'6"-5'7" libero/ defensive specialist Emma DeSensi. She looks to be attending and playing for Assumption High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and also plays club ball with KIVA - Louisville.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Per the below, looks like volleyball may have received its 1st 2023 verbal commitment. My initial QUICK searches hasn't found out who. (Although the way the tweet is written maybe there's been 2? Or, is he referring to the 2022 commit from a few days earlier.)

Per the below Instagram (and also showing on topdrawersoccer), Looks like soccer has received its 1st 2023 commitment. It is 5'9" goalie Jamie Campbell, who attends Newbury Park HS in the town of the same name in Southern California, and plays with the Real So Cal club program. In the "IMG Academy 150" published on topdrawersoccer.com, she is the #53 overall player and #4 ranked goalie in her class at this point. Topdrawersoccer also ranks her with 4 stars.

Welcome and congrats to her!

Another soccer website page for her - https://www.girlsprepsoccer.com/jamie-campbell-profile/
(Very close to topdrawersoccer's rankings, they also have her at 4 stars, and at #60 in the class of 2023.)

@TDforTD already noted this in the 2021 off-season individual sport thread, but since I like to collect all Buff commitments here, wanted to note that tennis received its 1st 2022 verbal commit in Carri Hayes, who is from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A page for her on the main tennis recruiting site I've found - https://www.tennisrecruiting.net/player.asp?id=824178

Per the below, looks like volleyball may have received its 1st 2023 verbal commitment. My initial QUICK searches hasn't found out who. (Although the way the tweet is written maybe there's been 2? Or, is he referring to the 2022 commit from a few days earlier.)

Quoting myself for reference- it looks like the new and 1st class of 2023 volley Buff is 5'10" outside hitter Avery Bolles, who looks to be currently attending and playing for Andover HS, Andover Minnesota, while also playing with the Minnesota Select club program.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I found on her:

Maxpreps page with her high school stats (for her freshman and sophomore years so far) - https://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/avery-bolles/pFzrJcIoEemAzfp8ouYFiw/volleyball/stats.htm

Her club's page for her (just contains a few measurables right now.) - https://www.mnselect.com/roster_players/43598592?subseason=466942

Track and field (and in one case also cross country) has announced the signing of 2 new Buff frosh*** to the women's team for the coming 2021/22 seasons that had not been previously known to this thread:
  • Distance runner Karina Andersen, who is from Ojai, California and attended the Thacher School and
  • Sprinter Kaleah Ruff, who is from Denver and attended Mullen.
(***Cross country has recently updated their roster for the coming season, and looks like there are also a few transfer distance runners I need to note in the transfer thread.)

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to them!

(Note - one small correction to the above tweet. Looking at the results website linked to below, it looks to me like Ms. Ruff won the 4A Championship.)

Prep results for the newest Buff frosh:
