Rivalry Question

I'll also add this: if CU actually becomes a tough game for the Trojans year in and year out, I wouldn't be surprised if they started thinking about a. going back on the "all the California schools play every year" Pac12 scheduling footnote (thus getting rid of Stanford 1 out of every 3 years), or b. paring back (not eliminating) their annual date with ND.

An annual schedule against 'furd, UW or UO, ND, a resurgent CU, and a true rivalry game against UCLA would leave pretty much any school looking for outs. A schedule like that every few years, fine. But for that to be the base every single year would be tough. (Incidentally, annual schedules like this are the real reason the B10 schools stopped playing ND every year. Once Pedo State joined the B10, Michigan quickly figured out that having Wisconsin, tOSU, PSU, MSU and ND on the schedule every single year wasn't a very good idea.)

A lot depends on CU getting our **** together and really returning to form. But USC is the target in the Pac12; I think it would be fitting for CU to emphasize the game, and don't be shy about telling people that you're emphasizing it.

A true "rivalry" may or may not ever develop, but if there's a true blue blood in your conference, of course that's where you hang your target.

The ****ers also wear red, and their fans are essentially just wealthier, better educated nubs fans.

i don't think we need to declare usc as our rivals. i just want to beat their asses and let the hate build. once we start to beat them, their trolls will show up. and, they have some very nasty trolls, just like uw. and, once the trolls show up, it is off to the races on hate. add in a couple of questionable calls, close games, team banter or activity, and we will have ourselves someone new to hate.
The problem with USC is their history with UCLA. We can hope that we could do to USC what we did with kNU and what they had with OU, but I don't think USC will be down as long as OU was.
I was friends with an All American DB from OU who played with Brian Bosworth (82-42 anyone) and he really struggled mentally with CU beating OU. He never did really consider us a rival though, even when we had multiple years of pounding OU. He always considered NU and UT to be their rivals (not OSU either). That is what I would think USC would be for us. We really do need BYU-Lite to be a rival because the other rivalries are too well entrenched in their respective fan bases.

Add to that whole mess, the fact that Utah is coming on as well.

i have been to a lot of usc games. everyone hates them. everyone wants to beat them. ucla-usc gets a lot of hype, but pretty much anyone good who plays usc brings their A game and a chip on their shoulder. they are the measuring stick in the p12.

Just get the USC monkey off of CU’s back. That is such a clear first step.

The rivalry aspect isn’t going to happen from an 0-fer divisional speed bump.

The Nebraska rivalry was/is much easier than USC or any other PAC school because the N fans are so obnoxious they are easy to hate.

Colorado is covered with ex-Californians and more than a fair number from the other PAC states but you don't notice them. They don't run around buying cars to match their schools colors like the Nebraska fans who then stick giant N stickers in the window and on the bumper and wear their red polyester hats/tshirts/coats/shoes/ shorts/ties/ etc. everywhere they go asking anyone and everyone "How 'bout dem huskers?"

Oregon fans are the only ones who even come close to being that obnoxious and they can't match up on their worst days.

Plus that GBR is annoying as hell. Especially when Wiscy is the REAL BIG RED.
NU can be Lil Red - GLR

Utah is realistically our only chance at developing a mutual rivalry in the PAC. Everyone else 1) already has one and 2) is too far away.

Many thought it was. There's more there with the border state and the fact NU had 1 rival (OU), but OU fans were more passionate about their UT game and also had an in-state rival with OSU. It at least made some sense. We'd also had a long history with Nebraska, even if it hadn't been a good one for 25 years. It's rare that lightning strikes twice. I just keep thinking how stupid I'd believe it was if Utah announced that it had a rivalry with USC.
CU was rudderless with no identity after the B12 came into being living off of the coat tails of the past, it didn't fly we backed into North titles playing bad football in a weak division.
In all seriousness in my mind USC is the new knu 0-11 as it stands, and for the youngsters on here there is nothing worse than having an overall W/L thrown in your face EVERY fricking year.
I don't have 35 yrs of life left to witness a change, I still smile every time knu loses not so much SC albeit I should..

The Nebraska game brings out the worst in me. I can do very well without a “rivalry”.

I ****ing love it. Saturday was an unforgettable day being there-Scott Frost debuted as head coach, Tom Osborne got inducted into their Hall of Fame, and we went out there and pissed in their cheerios. No fanbase is more fun to ****-talk to than them........they're so damn sensitive about every single one of their traditions (Saw a band at Single Barrel out there on Friday night, didn't know what the old lady singer's first name was, called her Grandma to my uber driver Saturday AM and the dude flipped out). I want them on the schedule as much as is feasible. If we somehow drop to eight conference games, I want to play them every single year.

Utah will become a rivalry. We need time, and we need more games like the one we had two years ago.

the Big 8 problem was not quality of play. CU, NU, and OU won NC's in the last decade of its' existence. basketball the Big 8 was sending 5 teams to the NCAA. over half the league.....good sport. KU won in 88 by beating OU. KSU was in the Elite 8 that year with Mitch Richmond. good sports league up to the end.....

i listened to some ESPN syracuse wonk talking about how "no conference has ever sent more than half to the NCAA" about the Big East or ACC a few years ago.....and it DID happen with the Big 8 more than once.

only problem the 8 had was population density. the new media market idea.

i thought the Big 8 was pretty cool.....but i grew up with it.....

i like where we are now. give it time.

we don't have a "rival", that's for sure.

beating the bugeaters was GOOD.

let's go from here.

Have you spent much time around USC fans?

My lawyer is a USC grad. They are stuffy, conceited, and very good at ignoring their history of cheating.

On the obnoxious meter though they don't move the needle. You don't see hordes of fans who have never been to the campus running around in uniform with giant SC stickers on their redneck pickup trucks. There are not Coloradans for USC groups taking over bars (or in any other state.)

Every school has some fans that are ridiculous but few have an entire state going full stupid for them. The USC fans don't build their entire identity on a bunch of 18-23 year olds, mostly from other states, and who will leave the state as soon as they can when done playing.

I think we can and should have 3 Rivals

1) Utah is our respected Rival and we gotta beat them every year, and have a friendly spirited game.
2) USC is the Blue Blood rival that we want and should strive to beat every year because they are the pinnacle of the division historically
3) Arizona is our Hated, F-U Rival that has spilled over from Basketball and from what Tate did to us last year. We want to beat them every year and wish nothing but bad luck and angst on them and their a-hole cheating basketball coach.

This covers our division and likely is the road to a championship anyway
Get excited about every game!!!

UCLA under Mora was always good for a slog through the muck. Talk about dirty play. I wonder if that changes with Chip. I haven’t seen much of UCLA this year, but the part of the Cincinnati game I did watch seemed like they were behaving themselves.

I was SO much more invested in the nubs game than any game CU has played since leaving the B12. And yes, the B8 was way better than the B12. The P12 is mamby pamby... sure there are good teams but they are P10... who cares really? That is the waterpolo and volleyball conference that plays real sports until 1am. ugh.

If that is going to happen, we really need their fans, players, and coaches to step up their game and be much bigger assholes. Because it just isn’t working when it’s only us.
