Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

I completely forgot about this, but someone on Twitter speculated that the Browns could be close to activating Watson and that's why they traded Flacco... That would be some all time clown show ****, tbh

This was always going to be an issue. Watson cannot be cut or placed on the practice squad without a franchise crushing cap hit. Flacco is done, and Cleveland is a)doing the old man a solid by trading him to a team that needs a starter, and b) getting a tiny bit of draft capital back in a 5th / 6th round pick swap.

Cleveland can now handle taking Watson off the PUP list, keep Zappe on the practice squad/emergency QB, and have Gabriel and Shedeur on the active roster.

Doesn't make sense for Cleveland to add Watson when they have his 40+ million insurance policy.

I agree that a Cleveland wants Watson on the PUP list. But, they cannot prevent Watson from coming back if he’s healthy. Watson may be content to do nothing, regardless.

I think they have to activate him if he passes a physical. Something like that
Yep. If Watson is medically cleared by physicians, the Browns can't have him on the IR or PUP list and also don't have a valid insurance claim.

If Watson wants to play another down in the NFL, then he surely would want to get back on the active roster, even if he doesn’t play (and he probably wouldn’t). I just don’t know if Watson is content playing out the string and retiring.

He's gonna milk his current contract before he even thinks about retiring.

I don't if that dude plays again. He tore his Achilles last year then tore it again? Not impossible, but an uphill battle.

Yes, of course. I’m only talking in terms of his motivation to get off the PUP list. If he wants to just collect the money, then zero motivation for him or the Browns to get him off the PUP. If he wants to play again, then he’d be chomping at the bit to get on the practice field again.

I'm not sold on Gabriel yet. The Browns had the ball twice in the 4th quarter when up by 3 and a chance to ice the game and Gabriel was unable to do much. Some of it was conservative play calling, but some of it was him. He overthrew the 3rd down pass with around 3 minutes left which would have probably sealed the game. Instead it stopped the clock.

I think the Steelers coming off a bye week might really tee off on Gabriel and bat down a lot of passes.
Hammer the Steelers this week. EASY MONEY.

Stefanski has gotta know he's unemployed come January. What a dumbsh!t.

Cleveland 247 insiders believe he is safe for another year. Who knows though.

I find Stefanski interesting. His reputation is that he is a really strong coach, and he’s won NFL Coach of the Year twice in Cleveland. On the other hand, his resume is incredibly light, and his record is sub .500. If you go back and look at the roster Cleveland had with Mayfield, it was pretty damn good. Did nothing with it.

I don’t know what to make of the guy. He seems very particular on the type of QB he wants, and reports are that he likes QBs that play very controlled and on script, both on and off the field. It’s cited as one of the reasons he wanted to move on from Baker Mayfield. Of course, this is just what I’ve read, so totally unsubstantiated.

All of the above are things that Shedeur is not, and again I’ve read unsubstantiated reports the Shedeur was definitely not a Stefanski selection. And frankly one he thinks is a headache.

It's not unusual for coaches to have the mindset that they're playing chess and that his players are game pieces that should move exactly as he wants and then stay in their box when the coach isn't orchestrating moves.

Not all of them are like this, but a lot of them are.

At the start of training camp, the Browns had brought in 40 year old Flacco, traded for Kenny Pickett, drafted Dillon Gabriel, drafted Shedeur Sanders, and had Deshaun Watson on the PUP. They signed Tyler Huntley to the PS, elevated him to start a preseason game, traded Kenny Pickett away, started Joe Flacco, released Tyler Huntley, signed Billy Zappe to the PS, started Dillon Gabriel, traded Joe Flacco, and now may elevate Billy Zappe off the practice squad to be QB2.

That is about 9 weeks in the life of the Browns.

Meanwhile, the player that Stefanski ran out of town, Baker Mayfield, is a productive starter for another team.

Think how many wasted reps happened in training camp. Mind boggling

You really can't trust Browns insiders as the Browns brass is purely untrustworthy.

KS may or maybe get fired but playing Shedeur will be more of Jimmy and Andrew's call more than KS as KS doesn't want to play Shedeur. He literally put Shedeur as a starter in game 1 with no practice reps. Shedeur shined and made him look like a dumbass. Then he went full sabotage mode against LA to prove a point. He's a clown but regardless, the Ls speak louder than words.

Mayfield is a top 10 QB in the league. He is exactly who the Browns wish any of their existing QBs could be
