Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

I was in a pub having lunch when they drafted tebow. I shouted no at the top of my lungs and an important part of my boyhood fandom of the broncos died right there.
Nooooo GIF
I got up and walked out of a Buffalo Wild Wings without paying. Didn’t say a word and left the Texans fans I was with the tab.

I will always love run pass Tebow. Had no business being a pro QB but he was a truly elite football player
It’s a shame he was so stubborn/adamant that he was a QB and wouldn’t even entertain the idea of an H Back type player. Could have been the first Taysom Hill type player had he just embraced it and not been focused on his “platform” to spread his Christian beliefs.

He was essentially a blockhead H-back playing QB. He did throw one good pass to a wide-open crossing DT on a great play design to win a playoff game. I can just imagine the coach in the headset yelling over and over before the snap, "just get to the ball to DT. He'll be right in front of you in the middle of the field. He's the big guy in blue." As I recall, it was about the only pass he completed the whole game. The Broncos won because they had an insane defense.

Josh McDaniel's first round pick for a QB was Tebow. Tebow. That still just slays me.

Both of these are correct. Tebow was an outstanding athlete, great competitor, quality leader. He wasn't an NFL QB. He could throw the ball through a wall but there was no telling which wall it would go through and him reading defenses was like me trying to read Mayan hyroglyphics. The dual threat QBs in the league now like Lamar are far better passers (difference between passing and throwing) than Tebow and can read defenses.

Interesting though that one of the explanations given for Shedeur falling in the draft was that teams didn't want the accompanying media frenzy. With Tebow it was a complete circus, far worse than anything that would come with Shedeur. In addition because Tebow put his Christianity so front and center the fans and media reacted in completely disruptive ways.

There were thousands upon thousands of fans, who mostly knew nothing about football or who chose to ignore what they knew, who had ardent opinions on him based on his beliefs. Some wanted him gone because they believed he shouldn't be publicizing his beliefs, many more believed from day one that he should be treated as a star because of them. Many including a guy I worked with angrily swore that they would never watch the Broncos again when he was traded away believing that it was entirely discrimination against his beliefs.

Shedeur has a strong level of confidence and personality but there is no way that he would ever be a distraction to the level that Tebow was and Shedeur is a far better QB. It is ridiculous what happened to Shedeur in the draft

That entire run to the playoffs was ridiculous. Go back to the individual game pages for the season and you will find that the offense with Tebow at QB was averaging less than 10 points per game.

They had multiple defensive and special teams scores. They had a number of FGs when the defense generated a turnover in scoring position and they scored the kick after the offense failed to move the ball.

At the same time they had opponents missing kicks, with scores called back because of penalty, missing key offensive players, etc. Just looking at the offensive production with Tebow as QB they had no choice but to replace him.

Just like everything else McDumby did drafting was unexplainable. He did draft DeMarious Thomas but then he drafted Tebow in the first. He had the extra pick because he traded Cutler to the Bears. He could have had a 10th pick in the draft due to that trade but he traded down, using one of the picks gained for Tebow. He also traded a 1st to Seatle for a 2nd in 2009 to draft a DB (Alphonso Smith) who most had rated as no better than a 4th rounder and who had a short, unproductive NFL career.

Basically a better version of Taysom Hill, but he didn't want to be in that role. Which is fine. He's doing well for himself. I kind of feel like we missed out as fans, though, to see Tebow show off his athletic versatility.

The only QB not to get reps with the #1 unit once again, yet Shedeur continues to outshine the other QB's. Really unfortunate for Shedeur, Cleveland is going to Cleveland.

Stefanski really thinks Flacco/Pickett/Gabriel are the answers at QB? I find that hard to believe
I wouldn't be at all surprised if one of Pickett or Flacco and Gabriel are the ones gone before the start of the season. Flacco looks incredibly old in recent OTA videos. If he is the starter, I don't think he lasts more than 4 games until some Edge absolutely folds him. He can't move anymore.

Thought you would like this analysis from the Browns subreddit.

It has been a nice pass time to check this spot 1-2 a week. Cleveland media is reporting that Gabriel doesn't look like and NFL player. Their fan base is fracturing. It.is fun to read

I think the GM was forced to draft him by the owner and the coach doesn't want him and is going to bury him until he can't anymore
I think it's going to take the player leaders telling coaches that Shedeur is the QB they believe in and for the QB Coach (Bill Musgrave) to be his advocate to OC and HC.

Regarding Musgrave:

I think there's a good chance he was one of the voices in the Browns organization who wanted to draft Shedeur. May be that politics and Musgrave getting a promotion after a shakeup is the path.

He's not an NFL QB. I've been saying this. For reference, he is an inch shorter than Drew Brees and his hand size is an inch less (about a half inch below NFL average for a QB). Generally, when a QB under 6'1" makes it in the NFL they have larger than average hands (Brees, Russ) or are incredible runners (Vick, Kyle Murray) or have some other super power like Vick's cannon arm or Brees's pinpoint accuracy. Gabriel has none of that. He's just a really good point guard of a football team and he has hit the level where his physical traits and skills aren't enough.

I don't know what Shedeur's future is, but he's got the football IQ, work ethic and toughness to succeed. He's got plus accuracy and enough arm strength to make all the throws in an NFL offense. He's got great feet in the pocket and enough speed to steal a first down or two off script. All that with physical traits that are within the norms for the position.

Here are the combine measurements (Shedeur/Gabriel):

Height: 6'1 1/2" / 5'11"
Weight: 212 / 205
Arm: 31 1/2" / 29 5/8"
Hand: 9 3/8" / 9 1/4"

Only negative on Shedeur here is hand size, but there's no history of ball security issues.

With Gabriel, the massive problem I see is that while Shedeur is average size he's over 2 inches shorter, his arm is a hair under 2" shorter, and his hand is a bit smaller. All that adds up to a release point that is extremely difficult to overcome. Doesn't really matter how good you are at processing the position if you have to find clean lanes to be able to see and to get the ball to a receiver without having to arc it.

P.S. Flacco is a massive dude at a legit 6'6" and he'd have to get skinny to weigh under 240 with his frame. Pickett is a bit over 6'3" and a solid 220 (hand size is only 8 1/2", which may be a big part of the problem with those slick NFL footballs instead of the ones they use in college with some game wear on them).

Anyway, it almost seems like the Browns have a dysfunctional personnel room that doesn't have a vision for the position. They valued one thing in free agency and went a completely different direction with the Gabriel pick.

I think it is pretty obvious that their coaching staff is pulling in one direction, while the front office is pulling in another, with the owner setting it all on fire. Fun to watch though!

Seems like the best thing for S2 is to be released or sent to the practice squad. It's likely he'd be claimed by another team through waivers, right?

No, best thing for Shedeur is just to keep doing what he is doing. Show up, be prepared, excel at everything they give him to do.

Lots of smoke around the Browns that they are likely to look for a trade for Pickett. As they get closer to the regular season there will be team that discover an urgent need for a QB. May be a veteran getting injured or unexpectedly somebodies veteran backup retires, might just be some team figuring out that what they have at QB stinks.

Flacco is almost certainly going to be the Browns openning day starter. He is also ancient and showing signs of continuing his decline in the battle against father time. Even if he doesn't get hurt which based on history is likely he doesn't have much left and they will look bad.

Browns have a lot of good players. Get solidly into the season and be struggling with a below .500 record and the offense not producing and they will be looking for alternatives.

Simply because he was a higher draft choice Gabriel will get the first shot but this isn't Oregon, he will struggle and eventually they will have no choice but to give Shedeur his shot.

Florio saying what seems obvious. They’ll try to trade Pickett since Flacco is already the veteran in the room, and then let Gabriel and Shedeur compete and try to show that one of them is the long term answer. That has to be Cleveland’s goal for this season since next years draft is viewed as potentially great for QBs and they have two 1s
