I say this without hyperbole - I guarantee you 90% of the Browns roster would rather have SS2 under center and see what he can do vs hitch their success to dudes like Flacco or Pickett. Sanders has "IT" and other players can sense that in a guy. How can you be excited about the probability of winning 6 games behind a 40 year old that's just trying to squeeze out a few more million before retiring.
The Browns coaching staff would be smart to start SS2 or Gabriel this year. At least when they end up winning 6 games and finishing last in the division again they can say they're building with youth and there are better days ahead. Doing that with Flacco or Pickett just shows you have no idea what you're doing and you're going nowhere.
This is spot on. Players rarely get to the NFL level without being very competitive, they just want to win.
Beyond that they know that guys who are on a winning team have a better chance of being in the league and making more money than guys on a losing team. They don't care about all the hype they want the QB who gives them the best chance to win games.
Browns have a bunch of draft capital next year and the year after. If they win 6 or fewer games there is a good chance the current coaches aren't going to be around to use those draft picks unless they can give ownership a real reason to believe in them for the future. That belief won't come from playing the retreads at QB all year.
Expect them to open the season with one of the veteran QBs starting but as things go sour (and neither of the vets will keep that from happening) they will turn to the rookies. Gabriel, even if Shedeur shows better in pre-season will get first shot but we know who Gabriel is and isn't. Eventually Shedeur will get his shot.
If Shedeur shows well enough then Cleveland may even pass on drafting a QB next year and instead use those picks around him. If they do go ahead and draft a QB then they won't be able to afford keeping Shedeur around to complicate the situation.
It would be very Cleveland to see Shedeur prove himself, still draft another QB, trade Shedeur only to see Shedeur succeed and their new rookie fail.
Keep in mind, different situations but still happend, that Farve, Brees, some others found success with teams that traded for them early in their careers.
