Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

There are Shedeur supporters like Rizzo, Kosar, G Bush, and some others in Cleveland media as well as Zugura who like him a ton. But Daryl isn't one of them. He doesn't dislike Shedeur but he isn't head over heels for him either but he definitely doesn't like Gabriel. Everyone here knows I liked Gabriel as a prospect but I never loved the personnel fit for Gabriel with Cleveland. He needs a stacked offense and Cleveland isn't that.
If you liked Gabriel as a prospect, I have to question your positional savviness.

I had a 4th round draft grade on him. Felt he had the most special traits in this class for QBs outside of Shedeur.

Loved his anticipation
His processing speed was fuego as a prospect
Always on time which is critical for a rhythm and timing based scheme

That's a lot. His issue was he has 3 critical flaws.

Size and length
Doesn't throw well in a muddy pocket
Struggles throwing on the run.

When you are small like him, struggling to throw on the run could be a showstopper.

Overall, I thought he was a pretty darn good QB prospect. I liked him a lot at Oregon and Oklahoma. Even some at UCF.

I just never though he could carry someone. He's like an inferior Tua with a stronger arm. Tua was one of the best prospects as a QB I've evaluated out of college. I just didn't know if the hip injury would ruin him. It somewhat did. He's not the athlete he used to be at Bama.

I also have size and length issues, but I thrive in a muddy pocket!

His anticipation and processing speed directly correlated to the offenses he played in. Only a half field pre-snap reads, 1 step drops and underneath/check down throws. Not exactly pro-level concepts. This doesn't even take into consideration his size and struggles on the move. 100% FA QB.

I haven't seen much comment on the fact Jimmy Horn Jr is playing for Carolina. I think SS plays half the game and Carolina, to show off for their home fans, makes heavy use of JH

Hulu is now showing the game on their NJ listings.

We've had some NFL successes in the last 20 years, but not a whole lot from skill position players (i.e. Laviska) This year should change that.

I don’t know if I’ve ever wanted a player to play better than I have for Shedeur on Friday
I want him to kill it. He is the only fully healthy QB on the roster aside from Flacco, and the Browns ain't gonna play Flacco at all in this first game. Shedeur has a perfect opportunity to separate himself here, and I believe he is up for it.

Stefanski will not play the Browns’ starters on offense with Sanders.

Carolina will have their starting defense in there.

He had to make full field reads at Oregon. Moreso than many guys in this class, especially someone like Ward and especially Dart.

Size and length showed up on film playing for stacked Oregon. You knew it would be an issue but so did muddy pocket and the throwing on the move is why I was shocked Cleveland saw him as a potential franchise guy. I just felt his ceiling was always top end backup.

Cleveland is going to give their 3rd pick every opportunity over their 5th round pick, because if SS proves to be better it would be a direct indictment on how crappy Cleveland’s scouting and draft personnel are at their job which ultimately leads back to the HC and GM. If you’re going to push him down to the scrubs, why even bother drafting him?
This is illogical thinking.
Drafting SS in the 5th round simply makes them look smart because they didn't need to draft him higher.
They knew his stock had dropped and they knew they could wait to get the guy they really wanted.

Of course, that doesn't explain why they wasted a 3rd rounder on Gabriel but at this point, they should be hoping to get 3rd round trade value for him but it would appear that show casing him is not going to help that value.

They win if they accept they got a first rounder, once in a lifetime value at QB, the most important position and write-off the other insurance policies that they paid for. In the end, those are mice nuts compared to getting a franchise QB really in any round, never mind the 5th. WINNING!

Calling the Browns front office and coaching staff "smart" is an interesting take.

Agree with you. Saw him as one of those guys who spends 8-12 years in the league for multiple teams. Gets 20 or so starts but can never grab and keep a starting job. Coaches love him because he will always know the offense and game plan even without a lot of practice reps.

He won't embarrass you but will never be good enough to be the guy you build around.
