Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

I think the Browns came into the pre-season thinking they would be able to trade either Pickett or Flacco for draft value depending on who won the job.

This off-season has been unusual compared to prior years in that we haven't seen a single established starting QB suffer a significant injury making a team desperate. At the same time Pickett has been injured and hasn't had a chance to show anyone why they would want him.

It also looks pretty clear that Stefanski wasn't planning on having Shedeur on his team. Gabriel was their guy (even though nobody else had him projected anywhere close to the 3rd round. His attitude has shown that he isn't thrilled about having Sanders in the race. Despite statements to the contrary it looks like Shedeur was Haslan's pick.

Stefanski has put himself in a tough position. He doesn't want Shedeur and has convinced himself that Gabriel can be his guy but if he doesn't give Shedeur a reasonable shot and the Browns keep losing he likely won't be the Browns coach at the end of the year.

It would have been easy for KS to take a more palatable position, and say SS and DG were tied/neck and neck/coming along evenly, rather than saying SS was #4 and impliedly not performing at DGs level (especially as the reverse is true).

KS definitely is biased. SSs arrogance, his dad's arrogance, who knows why, but it's sure there.

I think fans and players are recognizing this, and I think Gabriel's trying to trash SS with his "there are athletes and entertainers" comment didn't sit well with many other players and fans. And really, was he stating he's an athlete and SS isn't? That would truly be arrogant.
Gabriel is the tallest midget, so there is that.

Trading a player away for any draft capital has got to be the plan for the Browns. As I’ve written before, the 247 staff thinks Pickett is the most likely to be traded. At the same token, many thought it was a 50/50 choice between Flacco and Pickett to be the #1 QB out of the gate, but that competition evaporated with Pickett’s hamstring injury. The Saints are an obvious potential landing spot for Pickett.

The Browns QB room is odd in that there is not an obvious ready-to-start QB except Flacco, but at the same time, I don’t think any of the three (Sanders, Gabriel, or Pickett) would clear waivers if placed on the Practice Squad. Kind of a “too good/not good enough yet” dynamic there.

Gabriel had strong interest from the Dolphins during the draft and after the draft (reportedly), which makes sense to back up a lefty (Tua) with a lefty (Gabriel). The fish would be a big risk to snag Gabriel.

If Shedeur landed on waivers, there are at least six teams that would have major interest that I can think of, many of which have been named above, especially since the “hype” surrounding Sanders would be tamped down a good bit for the acquiring team snagging him off waivers.

What a pivot from the Browns. Flacco was never a long term option due to his age, so they spent three draft picks on a QB (more if you consider they traded up). Then didn’t give any enough camp reps to any of the QBs except their one option who is not in their long term plans.

I believe that the Browns front office planned to have a QB competition between Flacco and Pickett while developing Gabriel as QB3, then making a move if Watson came back this year based on how guys performed... but then the owner meddled with the Shedeur pick, put a resting-bitch-face on everyone in their draft room, and created a situation where the guy they didn't want is the fan & media favorite while they see him as a distraction & deviation from plan.

According to @#1 pick Shedeur was Berry’s pick

Stefanski is done after this year. There's nothing argue about there. 6 win ceiling and disfunction in the building does not bode well for a guy who's strangely overhyped.

I think you are right. I also think it is strange that he is willing to die on his sword pushing Gabriel over Shedeur but you don't get to be an NFL head coach if you don't have an oversized ego almost to the point of what some might call a god complex.

Others here have said that he is likely to get another HC job quickly but even in the organizations that have relatively hands off ownership don't hire a coach without ownership approval and owners want a coach that doesn't fight or oppose their preferences. If Shedeur was Haslan's choice then Haslan wants Shedeur to be given support and an opportunity. A lot of owners are going to be hesitant to hand over their teams to a guy who doesn't do what they expect.

As big as the ego of the head coaches is the owners ego is usually bigger, and it's their bank account that is backing it all up.

I think Stefanski will be a great next Husker HC after Rhule goes to Arizona.

Excellent theory. Only one flaw... When you said the "Browns front office planned" you lost me :ROFLMAO:

For Cleveland, I think the backup QB, after scarecrow Flacco is dinged is whoever wins in the locker-room. Although the players are not in charge, the guys on the team will know who they want to play with, and who they don't, and that will eventually leak out. Players play harder behind a guy who they think they can win with.

In this scenario winning over your peers is probably as good as whatever management decides to do. Cleveland may troll the market trading whichever QB they can get the highest draft pick for, however that market may not emerge and dumping the wrong one will make them look more idiotic than they already do. Then they probably have a Top-5 pick next year for another QB. However, some franchises (i.e. the Rockies, old Clippers) are just fine being idiotic.

That QB competition idea is my suspicion as well. Flacco was supposed to be a place holder until whichever of the young guys is ready to be the starter or until next years draft. Picketts arrival would suggest that staff has low confidence in Sanders or Daniel being ready.

It’s unfortunate for Sanders that the NFL is a play now or not at all mentality. But two pre season games, a short camp, and a small roster and salary camp lead to this. Sanders is probably the cheapest of the three players to let go.

Pickett’s arrival had nothing to do with the staff’s confidence in their rookies being that he got to Cleveland in March.

Haven’t you seen Gladiator? SS has won the crowd. They can’t let him go until he loses his appeal.
