i've had a few cocktails; i am a casual bb fan at best; and i am a contemporary of tad boyle (he's older than me) in colorado high school athletics.
all those caveats aside, i think some of you people are ****ed in the head. like royally, irreconcilably, irredeemably, and inconceivably ****ED in the head. tad boyle has done something that no one in the modern age of college basketball has achieved here. you dumb ****ing dumb asses want to fire him because he.lost.a.game.
this is not a traditional bb power. to say we were starting at ground zero is overstating how ****ed this program was. tad ****ing boyle has made this program relevant and credible.
seriously, some of you ****s need to go stand on the freeway at midnight in black clothing and let nature take its inevitable course. the fact that you've made it this far in life is a testament to god's good grace and the luck granted to the world's dumb ****s.

Tad is the best coach CU has ever had. He runs a clean program that graduates kids and that we don't have to worry about embarrassing us off the court.
When a program really sucks for a long time (think Kansas in football) then getting to the tourney is the goal, that is where we were and more often than not Tad has gotten us there.
Problem is that again using the football analogy going to the CBI is like a trip to the Gasparilla or Famous Potatoes bowl. Making the round of 64 is like a trip to the Sun Bowl or the San Diego County Credit Union Bowl. They are the equivalent of having a 6-6 or 7-5 season including beating up a couple easy non-conference games at the start of the season.
Last four years in the PAC (recently the weakest of the major conferences) we have gone 8th, 5th 7th, 8th. Decidedly mediocre at best.
I had big hopes for this season, lots of young quality players with potential and a difference maker in Kin. Losing Walton was a big hit since he was our only real big man with height but the roster make-up belongs to the coach as well.
This isn't a fire Tad right now post but unless we are happy with being the perennial team hoping to barely get in he needs to show something soon.
CU was a terrible basketball school. We were in basketball what Kansas is in football or Oregon State or Indiana hoping for our 6-7 wins and any bowl that will take us.
Many of the reasons/excuses we stunk are gone. We no longer play in Balch, we have a practice facility which is not state of the art but it also isn't an embarrassment, we also are no longer looked as as a laughingstock program. We have players who are looked at as major college players and we have put some players into the NBA recently.
Honestly the expectation isn't going to be top 10 or championship level as a consistent target. Our administration isn't going to nor should they support or allow the compromises the things that get a program in a "We now take you to" thread. What we can expect and should expect is some tournament wins, some top 1/3 conference finishes.
There are schools that have higher expectations for both programs than we do. Schools like Iowa, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and others have reasonable success in both.
Tad has earned the benefit of a doubt but he has also moved the program to a point where it is reasonable to expect another step. Now that expectation should be raised and Tad should know that he will be expected to lead that step or eventually changes could be made.

That being said ... I totally agree with the sentiments expressed in the body of your post. Of course, I would probably have chosen to be more moderate in my assessment of my fellow posters here ... after all, that is my MO.

What other schools do you believe have achieved thus in the last several decades that CU might use as role model?
I cant' think of any from D1. If you want CU to step down to DII so we can be like North Alabama or Grand Valley State, you're going to find yourself in a small minority
for anyone who thinks that basketball is getting the support it needs from RG and the university, I refer you to Boyle's comments at the beginning of the year around contacting every Big 6 team for a home and home and not being able to get a single response. If RG isn't willing to help Boyle with something as basic as a schedule negotiation, complaints around lack of university support seem quite valid.
But man the non-conf home schedule was just brutal as a fan this year
Don’t you know that ASU is an incredibly good job? Until Hurley got there, they had little tradition, talent or fan support. Somehow, since Hurley arrived, ASU has gained tremendous momentum, beating #1 ranked Kansas last night, recruiting incredibly well (not really from Arizona to eliminate that excuse for Boyle) with a dramatic uptick in fan support.
As Buffnik and others point-out, however, CU fans should be happy with a little better than a 0.500 record and any tournament bid whatsoever.

Ive seen some pretty cold takes but this might take the cake. Who in the **** would take this job that would be better than Tad? The man has put 5 players into the NBA and coaches such fundamentally solid teams that they are always able to compete if they play hard. One loss and you're calling for his head? Take a lap and throw your computer in the nearest dumpster
Dude.... I don't care if the Buffs were undefeated and ranked in the top 10 right now... I'd still be jealous of a team that beat the chickenhawks back to back years.

Winningest coach in CU history? At 174 wins? That doesn't matter. We're 8-2? What's our best win-Drake? That New Mexico team we had trouble putting away in ABQ is a whopping 5-6. Similar situation to FHCMM-Tad has done a very, very good job here. He's also been here for eight years. The argument that he's taken this thing as far as he can isn't that far-fetched.
I think the message here is we should all be happy with the state of CU basketball, and how dare any of us question the possibility of changing coaches, at least until the football program can support facility improvements for the basketball program. Doesn’t sound like that is anything that Rick George would support, but I will defer to the Almighty Allbuff Mods.

I think we all should listen to the people who only post in game threads when we are losing. I mean, really listen. They need help.

It's weird that you say this because I was just thinking about them. Just watching their basketball games, and their football games, it seems like everything about their operations and presentation is a lot more professionally done than what CU is doing. Better marketing, better what have you. All of it. CU looks bush league in regards to how we treat our basketball program.

Really depends on how you define success. Having a winning record last year was actually pretty good all things considered.
Depends on how you define "successful", I guess.
2015-16 was the last 20+ win season with an NCAA tourney appearance.
Last 2 seasons have been 19-15 and 17-15.
Seems like the benchmark for the seasons that have made us pretty happy is that we go at least 10-8 in conference play -- which means we have to notch some road wins.

As I've said before, there are very valid criticisms to be made of Tad. Things like his substitution patterns and his continued inability to get shooters into the program are things I find particularly troubling.
That said, he's a couple bad seasons away from us looking to realistically make a change. There's a very good chance this team will be competing for a birth this year and the next two years. Yeah, both losses this year suck. We absolutely can't lose to the Indiana State's of the world. San Diego was a veteran roster on the road. That's understandable.
