I think if they move to 8 or 12, then USC going independent would be a wash for them. They would probably have the same chance at making the playoff via an at large bid vs a conference champ autobid. But the money could be better so I could see it both ways
They made it last year when they were part of a conference, went 10-0 and played in the ACC CG. They made it in 2018 when they went 12-0 in the regular season.
They weren’t in the conference. They were affiliated with the conference as a matter of convenience in a bizzaro world timeline. They’ve had a shot at the title more than any P12 team. Being in this conference does not mean what you think it does.
This was my thought. Tennessee may lose another coach who wants to go home to a dream job.

Oregon at 12-1 would have been a lock for the CFP this year over an 11-1 ND. Being in ANY P5 conference is an advantage over being independent. It’s really not up for debate.
Let’s see who they get as their next coach before going off the deep end with these takes. OU is still a top 10 job.
Except for the fact that the P12 winner has been in the playoffs fewer times than Notre Dame. It’s not really up for debate. This conference is the red headed step-child.
That’s because the Pac 12 hasn’t had a 12-1 or better program in any year ND has been able to make the playoff. Playing a 13th game against a good opponent (Conference Championship Game) is an advantage over only playing 12 games. There is no debate about that.
Its why the Big 12 went back to a conference championship game. It’s clear to everyone
When in the Big 12. No playoffs for a team that is 3rd or 4th in their 7 team division. OU is the new PSU.
I look at Bohn's career and it makes me think that a lot of what pissed me off about him at CU was him being a good political soldier and taking the bullets for marching orders given by Phil D.
USC is not Notre Dame. They wouldn’t be able to sign a comparable deal to televise their home football games. They are not going to walk away from playing UCLA and Stanford in football and basketball. There’s no ACC to take their water polo, etc. teams.
That said, I hope the current Pac-12 commish understands that making USC, Oregon, Washington and UCLA happy is the job - not making Stanford, Cal, OSU & WSU happy like the last guy thought.
How much happier can they get? Arizona and Colorado in their division and yearly games against Cal and Stanford—seems pretty sweet. I mean aside from their basketball team being a wholly owned subsidiary of TadCo, obviously.
