The next two games that the Buffs play are the most critical in the Mike Macintyre Era

I am sure everyone realizes that the next two games that our beloved Buffs play are against the two teams that we cannot and should not lose to, but........... how confident are we in Coach Mac to reset his attitude, wrap up a solid recruiting class, make some much needed staff changes, and focus on the next 9 months to make sure the best players are on the field and make damn sure we do not lose to one or both of our RIVALS!!!

I know Mac talked about Gold Games, which he only won 1 of this past year, but he better have the Calendar marked up with the GREEN LETTER GAME and the much anticipated RED LETTER GAME!

I am already nervous as hell for these back to back games. We cannot lose!!!

You lost me when you referred to CSU as the "green letter game". I will say this-he doesn't beat them.......he's dead coach walking the rest of the year.

Ya. This was CSU's year. The year they had the depth and experience to compete for a MWC title. They couldn't get it done, and now lose a ton without much on the roster to replace them. CSU is gonna be turrible.

I only ask because I wonder if recent graduates understand the importance the Nebraska game used to hold to us. I've wondered if the players will feel the hate that I used to as a student. I still can't stand Nebraska and want to beat them soundly next year and the year after.

Amen Daaah

Too dramatic? We have only been in the PAC 12 for the past 7-8 years. It is not like we have not played Nebraska in 30 years and it is an old rivalry that is dead and forgotten! The passion and hatred for playing Nebraska was a way to motivate the players and the fan base to be great. The rivalry was born, not because Coach McCartney hated Nebraska, rather he respected the hell out of them and Coach Osborne and knew that we had to focus on beating them to be successful in the Big 8 and Big 12. That meant recruiting better than them ("McCartney would say that any Nebraska recruit that was serious about going to Lincoln needs to come to Boulder and they would easily change their minds), running the option better then them, playing defense better than their stupid black shirts, and just flat out kicking their asses. That ultimately trickled into the fan base because there is a pure disgust for the people of Nebraska who only used to come to Colorado to ski on our slopes. This single GOAL of knocking off the top program that was in our way to Championships helped to define the efforts that were made to finally beat them and ultimately replace them for a while as the top program. Sadly, the commitment to excellence began to fall off for many reasons and Nebraska re-established itself as the dominant program. Now, our rival and the school we hated the most is setup for a home and home series and we are at their stadium, and the youngsters on this site say oh well, we don't need to be favored, we do not need to win this game, because we will just bounce back and do well in our new cute little west coast conference. Load of sh*t in my opinion. If you are a true fan of the Buffs and what they have done in the past, then you want to win this game with every fiber in your body. The Skers are wounded and are bringing in a doctor to try and fix their ills. Well, common sense says that it will take at least 3 years to breathe life back into them, and thus we have a chance to punish our enemy and make them suffer the next two years. But, oh well, not a big deal. Ask the older alumni, former players of significance, and ask Coach McCartney what he thinks and then get back to me and my dramatics.

Must win or Mac must go period, end of story!!! I would bet if we lose to the Huskers, many of the important alumni will not be happy and may demand action, far more than any other PAC 12 game we play. There is no big picture, there is simply a matter of beating your two biggest rivals over the past 30 years. Would be nice if Coach Hagan would teach these youngsters what this was all about, and how important it is. And as for the Uniform, we better wear Gold Helmets, White Shirts, and Black Pants.

He won’t get fired even if he goes 2-10. Did you see his buyout numbers?

If he goes 0-2, he better just quit!!! I will be at the game and will find him and make him quit and walk home.
It would be an epic night of listening to Mac's excuses and Barnett's game wrap up.
Never say never if the unthinkable happens.

Yes you are being dramatic. And you are living in the past. What does needing to be favored have to do with anything? CU most likely will not be favored. As far as being a youngster - I was there when Dick and Bobby Anderson were playing along with Hale Irwin. I was in the stands when Kyle Rappold as an undersized defensive tackle constantly plugging the middle against the great NU Oline while helping CU beat Nebraska in 1986 (a year we lost to CSU). I have been around the CU Nebraska rivalry from the beginning to its end.

I would like to beat Nebraska but beating them will not be a defining moment anymore - like it was in 86, 89, 90 and 2001. Nebraska is no longer a national power house and we are not in the same conference - it is just not the same.

We should beat CSU, as others have said we should be CSU every year but especially in a year when they are turning over a bunch of their team.

Nebraska sucks. No I'm not saying that because I hate the fuskers which I do but because I have watched enough of their games the past couple years to confidently say they suck. When B1G offenses are regularly putting up 40 and 50 on them their defense is terrible.

Unfortunately we aren't exactly a powerhouse either. Games are won on the LOS and our defensive front last season couldn't maintain their position against a stiff breeze. Our OL loses its best player and what we have coming back does not look impressive.

This is going to be a game between two bad football teams who have both shown an ability to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory. It is a gamblers nightmare because you can't bet on both teams to lose.

What we are ignoring though is that this is a road game. As bad as our Buffs have been at home they have been worse on the road losing multiple games that should have been wins.

Win both of these games and the team is set up for a bounce back year. Lose both and the coaching search might as well get started. Beat the sheep and lose in Stinkoln and we get another year of mixed results and frustration. Welcome to life as a Buffs fan.

The 50 years of Buffs football I've witnessed has been an adventure with many highs and many lows. In order to fully understand what was accomplished during coach Mac's tenure one would've had to experience the lows the years prior. Personally I believe Bo Schembechler did more for CU football than any one person associated with the program, fans my age will be able to relate to this. It was Schembechler and the bitter rivalry between Mich & Ohio State that influenced Mac which CU benefited from. Moving forward, Mac recognized that CU's football program was stuck in a rut of accepting getting beat by ou & ne and was happy to run the table on the rest destined to finish no higher than 3rd year in and year out...it was the way of things. To his credit coach Mac changed the program's direction and in the process changed the fan's view of it's potential based on a very simple concept...to be the best you have to beat the best. The 94 Mich game would've never happened if not for this mindset and there would be no miracle.
I don't have more years ahead of me anymore so the one thing I don't want Buff fans to experience is getting into a situation similar to the one we had with nu. Years of getting beat..grin and bear it and hope that someday we can compete and be able to release all of the frustrations for the years before. As of now again just my opinion USC should be the date circled on the calendar, we're already 0 for 11/12 and unless CU wants a 17-42-2 record after I'm pushing up daisies a return to that mindset is absolute.
Stop scheduling powder puff OOCs, stop wearing white pajamas, set a bar and aspire to obtain it. Black & Gold intimidates it appears a generation has forgotten this. If anyone here is "ok" with a 1-1 start next year you might want to watch the 89 game with the red when for the first time many of us felt a huge weight lifted...it was our turn. GO BUFFS

For those still looking to NU as a rival I have some suggestions:

- If you live in Colorado trade in your Ford Fiesta for a Suburu, or a Lexus if you live outside of Colorado.

- Quite trying to source 8-track tapes of your favorite Deep Purple albums.

- Throw out that Members Only jacket you are wearing.

- Wearing red clothing is completely acceptable now.

- Give up your romantic notions that Ames, Stillwater, and Norman are great road trips.

This is absolute poetry to a Buff fan that Always BUFF wrote. Big Jim and Duff, you are a new generation of fans that are happy with everything but winning.
We are not advocating a romance with NU again, in fact when we moved to the PAC 12 I celebrated because we were able to get out of the same conference as the fuskers and some other sh**ty teams and programs and locales. I grew tired of the games because the Buffs sucked so bad and it was just not the same. However, the fury of the game, the history of what Always BUFF wrote about is what warms my heart as a Buffs fan, because our brand was powerful and respected. In 2016, we started to get back 1/10th of our respect, and it felt like the trajectory was nothing but up under MM. Knowing that we had the Nebraska series coming up, I was so focused on looking forward to a brief renewal of the memories and the hatred, and the great games. Then came last year, and these pathetic ups and downs that we have gone through and what the Huskers went through, just makes this game so much of a watershed moment in our current programs history. Yes, there are new faces and new places and that is great.

But, if Mike Mac after 6 years of having his RECRUITS, his COACHES, his CULTURE, great FACILITIES, renewed fan SUPPORT, and a big fat WALLET cannot honor the fans, the alumni, the former players with back to back rivalry victories over our two biggest rivals, when those two teams are at a much lesser point in terms of talent and trajectory, then he is not the guy for my beloved BUFFS. Based on most every factor going into these games, if Mac does not win these games, then I will push every single day for him to go starting on September 9th. However, between now and September 1st, Mac and the team have my 110% support (The players always have my support). If after his personal evaluation, he decides to stay the course, if he feels he has the right coaches, right players, the right depth chart, then awesome, let's roll. I am all in, and will be at both games cheering my ass off. You win, we all win. You lose, you have lost me forever!

And Always BUFF is 100% correct in stating that our new rival should be the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

I appreciate the sentiment, but I think that naming USC our primary rival would be silly. It is in no way an apples-to-apples situation compared to when it was done with Nebraska.

A 1-1 start would be just fine. You guys are already freaking out nine months early.
This is horse****, Duff. We demand 3-0, and no exceptions, because next year's team is due for some non-conf dominance over more legit competition to prove it is ready to win bigger ball games in conference next year.

Thank you. If CU lost both those games and then got its **** together to finish 9-3 (8-1) or something, I'd think that anyone who thought it was a bad year is an absolute idot.
No one is saying that would be a bad year. What some are saying though, is that this team's mental strength and maturity really should be to the level where they go 3-0 in non conference next year. Period.
Not all is lost if they don't, but they proved to themselves this year that they have a lot to prove next year.

OK. We're not far off, I guess.

I expect to beat CSU. I expect that NU will be a slight favorite in the game. I expect to roll New Hampshire.

I grant that CSU and NU games are more meaningful than an average non-conference game due to the long histories and proximity.

But at the end of the day, just as I didn't see it as a season killer when CU lost at Michigan in 2016 by blowing a lead through some boneheaded stuff and suffering major injuries to 3 captains, I won't be freaking out if we're 2-1 heading into Pac-12 play. Conference play is what will define the season.

It's not apples to apples, but it is apples to avocados. I'm fine with it. Part of a football team's identity is wrapped up in knowing who your rival is, and I refuse it to be our in-state ewes who aren't power 5.

I will not argue with my fellow fans. I have defined a specific target that determines if our $3 million dollar coach is the right one, period.
As for not being a "favorite" in Lincoln, that is a Vegas decision, not a football decision. Nebraska lost at home to Northern Illinois last year, so whoever is favored, I do not care, we must win that game. The line in the sand has been established, and I will see how the next 9 months play out.

Smoke on the water...

I stormed Folsom Field in ‘89 when we beat NU to win the Big 8 and earned birth in the Orange Bowl when their Hail Mary pass fell incomplete to end the game. That was then; then being a long time ago. The ridiculous chatter about reliving the glory days of old men is exactly what it is...ridiculous chatter. The idea that USC should replace NU as a self chosen rival and tieing that to firing a coach if the team loses a specific non-conference game is a bizarre link.

As to holding out that the ONLY path forward is to repeat a formula from 30 years ago is at best silly, at worst bordering on the myopic thinking of Tennessee fans. As to unilaterally stating that USC is CU’s new rival is patently ridiculous. USC has two of college football greatest rivalry’s on their schedule each and every year. Top that off with the fact that USC is not the conferences dominant program that NU was 30 years ago. Requiring a coach, any coach, to mimic the tactics of a predecessor 5 or more times removed is an idea sprung from the strategic vision of a ditch digger.

I suggest that some folks relax and enjoy the holidays. Visit your grandchildren and have the youngins set you up to watch a show called Stranger Things. It is on a newfangled internetty thing called Netflix. You will love the show, vintage mid-1980’s. One of the supporting characters even wears a Members Only jacket.

Nope...a 1-1 start would be a disappointment. Those Nubs are starting over and they will still be going through the motions with a new coach and new system while HCMM is going to be in his sixth year as a HC. There won't be any good excuses if CU loses in Lincoln given where both programs are at.

You can be disappointed, but it would not signal the end of the season. The OP is just emotional babbling.

USC is the big fish and hard to even point out as a rival until we consistently compete for the South.
UCLA on the other hand has been a bunch of asshat pricks almost every game (and the games seem to be close and emotion filled) so organically I have come to hate them more than any other team in the conference.

For the program a win against USC means more, but damn I hate those baby-blue thugs

I think you just make up a lot of stuff and then vomit through your keyboard.

USC IS OUR RIVAL! IT IS DECLARED! BOOM! WHEN DO THE WINS START RAINING DOWN?

Well, not until next fall at the earliest. I’d think you’d know that.
