The next two games that the Buffs play are the most critical in the Mike Macintyre Era

Amen Daaah

Too dramatic? We have only been in the PAC 12 for the past 7-8 years. It is not like we have not played Nebraska in 30 years and it is an old rivalry that is dead and forgotten! The passion and hatred for playing Nebraska was a way to motivate the players and the fan base to be great. The rivalry was born, not because Coach McCartney hated Nebraska, rather he respected the hell out of them and Coach Osborne and knew that we had to focus on beating them to be successful in the Big 8 and Big 12. That meant recruiting better than them ("McCartney would say that any Nebraska recruit that was serious about going to Lincoln needs to come to Boulder and they would easily change their minds), running the option better then them, playing defense better than their stupid black shirts, and just flat out kicking their asses. That ultimately trickled into the fan base because there is a pure disgust for the people of Nebraska who only used to come to Colorado to ski on our slopes. This single GOAL of knocking off the top program that was in our way to Championships helped to define the efforts that were made to finally beat them and ultimately replace them for a while as the top program. Sadly, the commitment to excellence began to fall off for many reasons and Nebraska re-established itself as the dominant program. Now, our rival and the school we hated the most is setup for a home and home series and we are at their stadium, and the youngsters on this site say oh well, we don't need to be favored, we do not need to win this game, because we will just bounce back and do well in our new cute little west coast conference. Load of sh*t in my opinion. If you are a true fan of the Buffs and what they have done in the past, then you want to win this game with every fiber in your body. The Skers are wounded and are bringing in a doctor to try and fix their ills. Well, common sense says that it will take at least 3 years to breathe life back into them, and thus we have a chance to punish our enemy and make them suffer the next two years. But, oh well, not a big deal. Ask the older alumni, former players of significance, and ask Coach McCartney what he thinks and then get back to me and my dramatics.

Must win or Mac must go period, end of story!!! I would bet if we lose to the Huskers, many of the important alumni will not be happy and may demand action, far more than any other PAC 12 game we play. There is no big picture, there is simply a matter of beating your two biggest rivals over the past 30 years. Would be nice if Coach Hagan would teach these youngsters what this was all about, and how important it is. And as for the Uniform, we better wear Gold Helmets, White Shirts, and Black Pants.

I appreciate your spirit my friend but there's a difference between tradition and nostalgia. The CU/NE rivalry was great in its heyday but right now it's two very mediocre teams from completely different conferences. I listened to me first Buff game on a big plastic radio in 1967, so I've run the gamut. (BTW, what the hell is a gamut? Am I spelling it right?) Let's beat the Huskers' butts but let's not give a monumental importance to the game other than it's an OOC game against a rebuilding opponent. To do otherwise is just nostalgia.

I love being a Pac-12 program. Too many of the Big 8 and even Big 12 fans were...

It just wasn't a good fit for Colorado.

Nik, we agree on a fair number of things but not on this. I'd much rather be in the B1G than the PAC-12. We could do much better in recruiting if we were in the B1G West than in the PAC-12. Californians are notoriously provincial and it will always be an uphill battle to pull the good ones off the West Coast. The PAC 12 is the football version of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being". Everything is important for 15 minutes but everything is meaningless 24 hours later. I would actually go to a road game in Madison, Minneapolis, or Evanston, but not in L.A. or the Bay Area.

Big Ten is a different story. That would have been an interesting fit. I don't think that was ever on the table, though. Not sure if the money could have been raised for the IPF if we hadn't connected to the Cali alums, which is something to consider. Pac-12 is really where CU belongs.

Red is only acceptable on my wife's toenails and I'll go no further. Being a Buff transcends life that once past you don't get back. 95 Buff truck that got keyed in ne...don't talk to me about the past and why I hate red.

Let me clarify my point on this thread so you can all be clear. I am not being nostalgic about playing Nebraska and dreaming of something like that coming back to us through USC or any other program because yes, what MAC did cannot be reproduced. My main point is that these particular games come at a perfect time to evaluate our coach and our program at an important finite point, since he is obviously our coach for the foreseeable future. Please focus on the timing of these games, the opponents, and the condition of these rival programs. As for the long term conversation, I do not care about that and it will take a lot to get back to what we had from 1989-1994. Time to make new history, and time to have the right guy there to do it. I still hope it is MM, that is why I am giving him the chance to prove to me.

WHY did we choose to make this series and a future series with Nebraska if it is no big deal? Don't you think the AD's felt that it would be a classic game with lots of fan enthusiasm and probably good TV coverage? I will bet that ESPN or FOX will choose the game because of the history and because it will be Frost's first big game.

I personally do not think lots of games against the Nubs is beneficial at all as we are not recruiting there. What I would consider is to alternate between Nebraska and CSU every year as our one rival game. Otherwise, I wish that we would play a game in Texas every year so that our recruiting pipeline and our players from Texas could have family and friends see them, and help promote recruiting.

Many of the old fart jokes are pretty funny and do not bother me. Stranger Things is based on the 80's though, so why are you thinking that proves your point? Us old folks enjoyed the Buffs when they were tough and good, not like the "SOFT" teams we have seen the last 13 years. If our fans cannot get excited about these two games, and do not demand and hope and encourage a 2-0 start because we can explain away the totality of the season, then we are such a sad program. The Huskers just got some hope back with Frost coming back, and I want to win those games so bad, end of story.

How do you like that throwback picture up there?
One of the best rivalries of the first decade of the Big 12 will be returning, though Colorado is now in the Pac-12 and Nebraska is in the Big Ten. Realignment may have obliterated the storied rivalry between the Buffaloes and the Cornhuskers, but a mini-version is coming back.
The programs will reunite for a four-game series from 2018-24. After a home-and-home, they'll take a three-year hiatus before renewing the home-and-home series again in 2023-24.
Then-Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn (now at Cincinnati) arranged for the series with Tom Osborne before he retired from the AD job at Nebraska. Though the Huskers have a decisive advantage, their first five meetings as Big 12 participants all went to Nebraska but by a grand total of 15 points.
The Buffaloes gained a measure of revenge, but then things dissipated when the programs went their separate ways. After years of frustration and futility following those great teams, both are winning again. Last year, CU coach Mike MacIntyre had the Buffs in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
Though Nebraska coach Mike Riley isn't winning enough to satisfy the Huskers, they're doing OK, too.
By the time these games roll around, they'll be back on the national radar. And it's a game you should know about because it could be exciting, just like it used to be.

If CU comes out flat footed in these games, even in victory, there will be glaring issues. We’ll see how well the team is mentally prepared for next year.

Key games on September 8th:

Colorado at Nebraska
UCLA at Oklahoma
Clemson at Texas A&M
USC at Stanford

Should be in line for a decent TV spot

You really gonna be upset if CU wins both of those games but doesn't deliver style points?

Not upset. It’s not even about style; it is about whether we show that we’re going in the right direction. When Texas State gashed us for 156 yards in the run game, it showed a glaring weakness that proved to be one of our biggest defensive liabilities all season. While we won that game by 34, it was a bad sign for games to come.

I will be happy if we win, but skeptical about our team’s progress if we get pushed around on the LOS.

I am sure everyone realizes that the next two games that our beloved Buffs play are against the two teams that we cannot and should not lose to, but........... how confident are we in Coach Mac to reset his attitude, wrap up a solid recruiting class, make some much needed staff changes, and focus on the next 9 months to make sure the best players are on the field and make damn sure we do not lose to one or both of our RIVALS!!!

I know Mac talked about Gold Games, which he only won 1 of this past year, but he better have the Calendar marked up with the GREEN LETTER GAME and the much anticipated RED LETTER GAME!

I am already nervous as hell for these back to back games. We cannot lose!!!

Wait, what? You mean you didn't get MM fired? He's still here? You failed. How disappointing for you.

Well at least you still have 9 months of incessant emo garble to work your magic. Keep up the good work.

MM is safe for 9 months and I will be leaving him alone to work his magic right up through the first two games, and then depending on the results, I will either be quiet or incessantly a pain in his ass. Go Mike, Go Buffs! Are you being sarcastic, I am confused.
