Thoughts on Eliot so far?

D has looked solid so far... a little slow to start each game, but understandable when teams have the 1st couple series scripted and well rehearsed. Great adjustments during the game though to date. We had 2 definite turnovers in the ucla game? and just didn't make the catch - Worthington had one dead to rights and ?(edit: Lewis) had one bounce off his hands.

I get those that are saying it is a joke to compare the numbers to Bama, but they have not played a much better schedule than we have.
mmmm....don't agree. The Buffs have arguably played the easiest schedule in the P5 - at least statistically speaking.
Alabama's played:
Louisville: Their record - 2-3
Arky State: 3-2
Ole Miss: 3-2
aTm: 3-2
Arky: 1-4

Don't get me wrong - I think the Buffs are having a great season so far. But we are not remotely in the same class as Bama. Only a few schools are.

I agree with most that has been said on here.
Obvious half time adjustments have been huge.
One note on how we start the games, No game film on N and a struggling fUCLA had a bye week to try and fix things, I am sure they had a few new wrinkles for us to figure out
I am expecting, going forward, that our D will get off to better starts the rest of the season.
That being said I would like to see a better run D. The fUCLA QB was never going to beat us passing the ball.

I am satisfied with his body of work this season. Up to this point. It is nice to see a staff that can at least make some adjustments at half time. We have not done well with this in general during the losing years.

If I had a critic, it would be coming up with a defensive game plan that would force them to try to adjust at half time, instead of us having to make the adjustment.

I think the red zone defense has been even better than the half time adjustments and that goes back to last season. We gave up a **** ton of yards but scoring wise we were better. That is always a good advantage to have as a D coordinator.

Was not trying to say we are in the same class as Bama. Just pointing out their schedule is no great shakes. They have played nobody either and the list kind of shows that.

I met and talked to Eliot this summer during the youth camps (at soccer camp). His son was doing football camp and one of his daughters was in soccer camp (same as my kids). Really nice guy. I didn't talk about specifics, but asked how the team looked. He said really good, kind of coach speak, but you could tell he was actually confident in them. I think he will end up being a key recruiter on the defensive side. Super easy to talk to, plus it impressed me that he remember my son's name from the previous days.

That’s not an answer.
Well, I can’t point to exactly what he changed at half because I’m just not that smart. What I can tell you is that the CU defense gave up in the second half..

3 CSU
7 NU
7 NH
3 UCLA

You win games that way.

I don’t need to tell you Elliot brought more pressure of the left side because he saw a weakness there. Nine times out of ten, l would never be able to notice it.

However, first half points...
10 CSU
21 NU
0 NH
13 UCLA

Other than NH (garbage time), CU gave up fewer points in the second half than the first. If it’s not adjustments, what exactly is it, in your opinion?

Hard to say without being in the locker room or knowing what specific schemes were giving the Buffs a hard time in the first half, but adjustments are always made at half, even if very minor. Against Nebraska and UCLA, the two games where the most noticeable change in defensive play were made, they were facing offenses that they had very little film of the scheme and personnel (0 games on Nebraska and 3 games on Chip Kelly’s UCLA). You create gameplan based on what you think they’re going to try to do, and then make adjustments based on what they actually try to do.

I don’t know why you’re questioning the adjustments being made. It’s quite obvious they are playing better in the 2nd half of games.

Second half numbers are indeed good.
