UCLA fires Jim Mora

Be it Chip or Sumlin, UCLA is getting ready to upgrade, further widening the gap between Bruins and Buffs.

Didn’t his team give up something like 35 unanswered points to that very same Jim Mora led bruins team?

I’d be skeptical of a Sumlin hire if I were at UCLA. I’d be skeptical of it at CU, in fact.

As for Kelly, we will see. He walked into a great situation in Oregon and built it up. Anybody who goes to UCLA now will have to figure out who his quarterback will be. UCLA hasn’t recruited to run the spread. I’m skeptical there, too.

Sacky - You would be skeptical that the Sun would rise each morning.

Kelly walked into a really good program when Phil Knight made what looked like an insane move by taking an OC from New Hampshire with no west coast ties and having Bellotti turn over the entire offense to Kelly.

Is Sumlin really a better recruiter than Mora? Recruiting was not Moras issue, so at best, they’re a wash in that department.

To be clear, there are people here that would not take Sumlin over HCMM? Really?

So we spend 20 pages on this forum ripping HCMM and then decide that Kevin Sumlin would not be an upgrade? SMH.
Saban and Urban are the only hires that would get near universal support from the CU fan base. Dabo is on the cusp. Jimbo's clearly lost it. The shine's off of Harbaugh.

To give some perspective about how insane this board is in its coach evaluations, 5 years ago when CU was hiring MacIntyre it was suggested that Mark Richt and UGA were nearing the end of their relationship, Richt grew up in Boulder, and the Buffs should see if we can make a run at him... the excitement for that idea was tepid at best. I'm continually amazed at how few guys a strong majority of us would acknowledge as really great coaches.

I don't know, Saban is 66, that's pretty old.

Maybe. But you have no cred given your anti Mac bias. But then I’m not a huge Mac fan either.

Everybody has their own ideas of what should be done and they ultimately want to feel vindicated when “their guy” works out or another guy fails. I think we’re all guilty of this to a certain extent. I’ve been a staunch Mac supporter, but if they decide to mutually part ways, I’ll be excited for the next guy, and be 100% on board with RG’s choice until proven to be a poor decision.

Kelly would be a huge hire for them and could shift the power in the south. Can’t really say the same thing for Sumlin.

Not so sure if he's that big of an upgrade anymore-he was an innovator when he first showed up at Oregon, but don't most people use some sort of tempo in their offenses?

There's a reason Sumlin is about to be fired.

Daffy Duck could recruit to UCLA. You need a ball coach there who can make guys better. Whittingham would win big. Sumlin ? Yawn.

Hope it's Sumlin.

He might be an upgrade over MM... but what am I missing? Since Manziel left, his team looks pretty average and folds every November. Not understanding why Sumlin is somehow being elevated to a good coach?

Sumlin's first season, Manziel's Heisman season, was pretty special: 11-2 (6-2 SEC). Since then, he's got a losing record in conference play and hasn't finished a season ranked since finishing #18 in his 2nd season/ Manziel's last. Considering the facilities that have been built at aTm and the level they've been recruiting, it's hard for me to say that he's more than just a guy as a HC. Nice success in his 4 years at Houston (other than the 5-7 in year 3), but he followed Briles and Houston's got huge advantages over its AAC west competition, so how much of that was really what he did?
