I figured that most of the coaches are very safe.

Petersen (Washington) and Shaw (Stanford) are among the nation's elite coaches.

Whittingham (Utah) and Leach (Washington State) are established and enjoying success at those schools it's hard to imagine anyone else surpassing.

MacIntyre (Colorado) and Anderson (Oregon State) are riding breakthrough seasons and new contracts.

Taggart (Oregon) and Wilcox (Cal) are brand new and won't get fired after one year.

That leaves 4 that I'd say are on the hot seat:

Graham - After winning the South in 2013, he's really fallen off and is 11-13 over the last two years. With a huge investment in facilities and an undying belief by the ASU faithful that they're a sleeping giant, his job's in jeopardy. Also, they've got a new AD which is never good for a coach on the hot seat.

Helton - Wasn't a splash hire and only went 6-4 in part-season duties before going 10-3 last year in his first full season. Recruiting is Top 5. On-field results expected are also Top 5. With Darnold one of the leading Heisman contenders, a failure to meet expectations this year could push USC into a quick hook.

Mora - Recruiting has been great and the Bruins are putting a ton of guys in the NFL. But where are the results? UCLA is only 25-20 in conference games from 2013-2016 and went 4-8 overall last season. Another disappointing season (8 wins or fewer) could spell the end of the Mora era.

Rodriguez - It's damn hard to win in Tucson and even harder to win consistently. Bowl games in his first 4 seasons and won the South in his 3rd year (2014). Then a 3-9 season with a 1-8 conference mark in 2016 has raised the question. It's doubtful that UA can do better, but another non-bowl season might be the end.

Graham.

Just reading about Mora this offseason, I think he is safer than most would assume at first glance. He has UCLA on the hook for a lot of money right now. Rich Rod seems to benefit from low expectations and I expect a decent bounce back for him in 2017.

Oregon State is riding a breakthrough season? Didn't realize 4-8 qualified as such. Regardless, I agree he's not on the hot seat in 2017, but he will be in 2018 if he doesn't get to 6 wins this year.

They finished strong, including a win against Oregon that's worth more to those fans than a bowl season would have been valued.

Ok, but calling it a breakthrough season is a little much. MacIntyre just had a breakthrough season. Anderson probably gets 4 years no matter what, but it wouldnt shock me to see him let go after this year if their defense is **** again and they can't win more than 4 games.

It should shock anyone if Andersen is let go after three seasons. Oregon State is going to be patient.

Without Dave Aranda running his defense, Anderson hasn't been a good Head Coach (21-38). They also play a tough game against CSU to open the season, have Minnesota at home, then have a 5 game stretch of @WSU, UW, @USC, CU, Stanford. Then finishes up @ASU and @Oregon. Would it seriously surprise anyone if they went 2-7 or 1-8 in those games?

Your "record without Aranda" is meaningless without context. Considering he led Utah State to the first bowl game as a 1-A school before Aranda arrived, seems a bit silly to give Aranda all the credit for the WAC championship in 2012. Aranda certainly has a great track record as a DC, but Andersen has a good defensive background himself.

Oregon State just gave him an extension and he will get time. I seriously doubt they have the money to buy out four years on his contract if they fire him after 2017. Add in the appeal of job (ha) and I am guessing most OSU fans feel fortunate to have Andersen.

Graham. ASU wants more and I don't think he'll be able to deliver.

UCLA doesn't have a cutthroat enough AD to fire him unless he's just a disaster. If he can deliver a 7-8 win season he'll be ok.

USC is so talented it's hard to envision them not winning double digits at least. I guess if they just fall apart Helton could get fired, but they have a lot of momentum from last season.

RichRod could get fired, but I think if he can manage a meh bowl game 6-7 wins or so he'll get another shot. That's still a basketball school.

UCLA got a big bonus for signing with UA. Makes buy-out easier if necessary. I think UCLA has a good year.

Rich Rod is in trouble with the schedule and decline of the program. I do not see them digging out any time soon. Boom, he fired

I wonder what impact the early signing day in recruiting will have. A rush to fire early and name a replacement before Thanksgiving? Holding on thru signing day and then firing? Probably the former, I think, because if it will be anything like hoops it will become normal to let recruits out of their commitment after a coach leaves.

This question had me going:

Cal is stuck with Wilcox because they are still paying Dykes a ton of money and Wilcox's buyout won't be cheap. So even though I expect them to be the worst team in the conference for the next five years, Wilcox should be there for at least three.

I'll say Graham.

I get the feeling the AD would go before Mora.
One of the most ridiculous things in college sports is how much UCLA fans hate Chianti Dan. Guy has transformed that athletic department from a place that did everything on the cheap.

UA can do better.

Graham was almost fired after this past season, and his defense is a mess, don't think they have great QB play, and he can't cheat as easily anymore.

Graham has very solid talent if you look back over the past four years of recruiting. He had some unexpected holes at QB and CB last year. At least the QB part should be fixed. The freshman who played CB have another year of experience.

If he can't put a decent season together it is because some non-negligable part of his success relied on spying and we all are onto his methods. Even so, he has two more years.

RichRod may jump before he is pushed at the end of the season. The guy seems to wear out his welcome and he can sense it.

Oregon State is used to being a doormat, for them that 4-8 and beating Oregon is a fairly successful season. They also don't have the influential big money boosters who are going to step forward in a way that forces the school to make a move.

Graham is doing a Skippy. He has a bunch of skill guys who the fans are all excited about but his team is terrible on the lines. The fans are going to have big expectations and instead the high scores will be from their opponents. Recipe for getting fired. If he loses to Zona he best start looking for a real estate agent.

Oregon St vs Cal last year reminded me a lot of us pre-2016. They just kept shooting themselves in the foot. Ultimately won the game in OT but there was no reason for it to be close. Think Nall will run all over CSU and they'll win convincingly. Also think they will be a tough road game for us.

Back to the question.. gotta be the end of Graham soon.

What kind of coaching options Is Rich Rod going to have if he does get fired after this season?

He shouldn't have any but he is still a big name, some guys always manage to land on their feet. Likely some G5 program that wants to be "big time" will overpay him. If not he could sit out a year and get a job the following year.

He's averaged over 8 wins/year, won the South, and gone 3-1 in bowl games prior to 2016 at UA. For an athletic department that prioritizes basketball well over football, it would be logical that some middling P5 programs would be interested, especially if they have a bounce back year and win 6-7 games.

I don't know if a "middling" P5 program would go there but one that has been stuck near the bottom may be willing to both pay him and to give him the kind of control he wants. He is still a well known name in coaching, he is the kind of guy an athletic director who is worried about his job throws out to the alumni and donors to show he wants to win. It is that same name recognition though that could get a G5 program to break the bank for him..

He will have options.

It's Al about trajectory, not how many games he won with Stoops' guys. Same with Graham and Mora. All 3 programs are worse than when they got there
