Woelk: Storylines Will Be Plentiful When Buffs Open Camp

Special teams have improved, seemingly by accident. When you upgrade the talent level on the team as a whole, it stands to reason that the talent on special teams will improve as well. We still have issues with the individuals assigned to do the kicking and punting. Both are merely adequate, and barely that.

1. Can the new DL duplicate the DL from last season?
2. Who will replace Carrell?
3. Mulumba
4. Montez has the #2 WR corps in the country...he'll step up.
5. WR for sure.
6. That OL should take a step forward for sure.
7. I'm curious to see how much better he can be this season especially with 4 OL starters back.
8. Dude, how much better would that CU pass rush have been if McCartney was healthy all season long?
9. I can't wait to see how that DL does.
10. We beat them 44-7 last season...how could we not have the edge?

1) Biggest question: How good will our defensive coordinator be
2) Biggest hole to fill: Agree its Sefo. That kind of leadership not easy to replace
3) Gamboa all the way. Depends on if we use the kid as a classic Ted like we should. See 1
4) Is Montez ready: Sefo lead and inspired even with cast on. How inspired will Oline play for Montez?
5) Position Battle: Receiver.
6) Oline: Maybe. worried about Center
7) Lindsay Better?: See #6
8) Agree
9) Defensive line: ton of raw talent. Jeffcoat good. Will take till mid season. See 1

Sorry, cannot run with you on these...
Montez is a 100% improvement over Sefo. I think Sefo was an admirable college player that had toughness and grit, but is not a premier college QB at all. I believe that Montez has something special similar to Darnold. I wish I was a fly on the wall to really know the truth from the rest of the team on how they really felt about Sefo. I agree that the play calling was dismal no matter who was QB, but in my opinion, if there were better QB play, slightly better play calling, and legitimate special teams, that the Buffs would have beat Michigan, beat USC, and looked a lot better against a Washington and Oklahoma State. Sefo was not the reason for the success, the success was had despite Sefo. Very excited about 2017!

I think one thing that is overlooked this offseason is that Montez doesn't have the same kind of expectations that Darnold has.

USC had 10 starters back on offense prior to the 2016 season and like in the CU game last season, Darnold was able to get away with mistakes that he made. Montez has a lot of offensive starters back this season. Perhaps Montez outshines Darnold this upcoming season? Especially when USC has just five starters returning on offense this year.

IMHO Sefo was better than people think. He just played hurt most of the time. Still, he is no Browning, but I bet his teammates would die for him. That counts for more effort in practice and games...big effect.

Montez will be really good due to the players coming back which you could have said about Darnold last season so it's reasonable that Montez could have a better season than Sefo last season.

Sefo was not better than most of us think lol he is what he is. His inaccuracy led to many stalled drives and he left a lot of yac yards out there by failing to his receiver in stride. Leadership is always a big factor but it's not like the offense doesn't have veteran guys who will push the team. I think plenty of guys would die for Lindsay too.

SIGBY, the leadership void will be filled by Lindsay and the OL this year, IMO, and Montez is more talented than Sefo, which will count for more than the toughness he brought.

There were plenty of people that criticized sefo's leadership before last season. RK even said he wasn't close with the rest of the teammates. If Montez loses games he will be criticized as a leader no matter what he does and if he wins it won't matter.

It's premature to start comparing Montez to Darnold.

Montez has the tools. It remains to be seen if he has the intangibles that are needed to be an effective QB at this level. From the limited action we saw from him last year, I'm optimistic. That's still a long way from the same level as Darnold.

That said, there aren't a lot of holes on this offense. The OL is big, strong and deep. The WRs are fast, experienced and very deep. Lindsay is a stud, and his backups are solid if unspectacular. We should score a lot of points this year. Montez doesn't have to be a superstar.

Agree Montez doesn't have to be a superstar while Darnold will have to be the superstar for the Trojans and even with all those returning starters last season, he still showed some flaws. I think Darnold is being overhyped this preseason.

I think people are forgetting about Josh Rosen and Utah's Williams in that new spread offense for the Utes.

Point being, you can only praise a QB so much if those are the best wins. Sefo did a very good job leading the team in 2016, but he is not even close to irreplaceable.

Look at Darnold against CU, Washington, and Penn State. That is what a great QB looks like on the biggest stages.

Darnold is being over-hyped for a reason. He is the real deal. He has everything you want in a QB and has all the tools.

The only reason i would worry about darnold is because he spontaneity came at such a surprise to many teams. This year they will be prepared but that should open up more aspects to the offense.

Montez's will be fine. Love his upside vs Sefo and I was a Sefo fan. Will he make some mistakes, sure but QB is not the area that I would be worried about. Cannot wait to see this team play ball. Should be the most fun on offense in a decade.

Defense and Montez. Both have potential, but not proven (although its nice that Montez has some starter experience).

I love Montez and I think he is similar to Darnold. They both have the athleticism and brain speed to create when plays break down. Too many INTs for both. One is overhyped cause he plays for USC. With our WR corps pretty good shot Montez outperforms Darnold this year.

My only unknown with Montez is does he inspire people to put in the work? I'd have that question with any new starter.

Darnold lost one game as a starter last year and played some of his best ball against a few of the best teams in the country. He's not being overhyped because he plays for SC. He's being rightfully hyped because he's a big time player. Montez showed flashes against some weak defenses. I like Montez too, but stop with the Darnold comparisons.

I really liked Sefo but if I remember correctly he never led the team back to a victory...Montez did that in his first start v Oregon. I have high hopes for this offense...the weak link could end up being BL/play calling. I'm not anti-BL but he had some head scratching calls last year and the O seemed to stall a bit after an incredible 5 halves to start the season.
