Wyoming Game Week Thread - Saturday at some ungodly time

We may need to borrow a page from the Mormon Playbook, and pray we can beat BYU.
They dominated us as much as anyone did last year and they return lots of starters. including I think, their entire
OL. And it felt like they had a real attitude.
On the other hand, most of our starters weren't here last year, so they won't have personal bad memories.

Someway, somehow, both the O and D coaches have to come up with creative, inventive game plans that work.

i am sorry but 8 wins is just a wishful thinking at this point. What do you see on the defensive side makes you think Colorado can stop teams like TCU/ISU/ASU?

The best case scenario for us is to beat BYU/WVU/KSU/UA to get 6-6. And I would give it 20-30% chance. This is how much disappointed I am in our defense.

yes, wishful thinking! I am good with that.

Remember that time earlier in the game (when we were still up) and within Buchanan’s range and we could have given him a shot, but instead we punted?
That’s a coach trust/decision issue. Nothing to do with Mata. If they felt Buch was solid enough from range, they would send him in.

On the TD that Vickers gave up. Could anyone tell if that was straight man that he got beat on or if that was a Cover 2 type of zone? I saw the Safety coming over the top and Vickers trailing which makes me think it was C2 but didn’t get to see a replay
It looked very, very similar to the TD play that he had against Houston (stop and go). I’m thinking that the Wyoming coaches saw that last week and decided he was vulnerable to biting on the stop move.

Big 12 is such a week to week league with no real dominant team. Maybe TTU is that team this year, but if CU gets the Salter from last night, I think they can beat anyone on their schedule. Likewise, if the defense doesn’t fix some of the lapses that lead to their chunk plays, they can lose to anyone.

Barnes' suspension forcing them to play Oatis was awesome because I thought Oatis actually looked pretty ****in good last night. Still upset about the MIA edge players (Walker and Wade ended up solid last night). Exciting that Merritt and McPherson look legit.

Stoutmire is somehow worse than Shiloh at taking angles and wrapping up. That was very sad for me. French and Hughes are fine, imo, but they are no Hill-Green. I miss him so much

I’m prepared for a schizophrenic rollercoaster ride for the rest of the year, but reading too much into Salter’s play against Wyoming is almost as bad as reading too much into Staub’s play against Delaware

Salter is just so much better than Staub, talent wise. His shiftiness alone can cover tons of issues from the OL.

You just have to design a system that is tailored to him, and we failed to do so in the whole offseason.

If you really want to know what's the issue we have now, it's bad coaching. Including HC, OC/DC and position coaches.

More about the level of competition. Let’s talk after byu
I’m not saying Wyoming is all that good, but their defense is not bad at all. Kept Dampier and Utah in check most of the game, while Salter and the offense mostly had their way all night. Salter accounted for nearly 400 yards and 4 TDs and finally looked like the guy from 2023 Liberty.

But, yes, he needs to prove he can be that same guy against BYU

Sorry, I didn’t watch the UU Wyoming game. I went to look at the stats and was surprised to see that Wyoming gave up 540 yards. Not sure we agree on what it means to keep offense in check

Wyoming looked like a tough, well-coached team that didn't have much in terms of speed or playmaking ability. A better version of Delaware. Also, a high percentage of the teams in the Big 12 are like this and brought their FCS or G6 program management & staffs to P4. I see a lot of Big 12 teams that are like GB's post-scandal Buffs that are good but not talented enough.

That’s fair. I didn’t realize it ended up that lopsided. It was 3-0 Utah at half time and Dampier hadn’t really done much to that point. Salter had a better overall game against them but it was similar to Dampier.

Utah was moving the ball smoothly. The only reason they were only 3-0 at half time is because they suck at red zone play and they missed 3 FG.

I think we played Wyoming slightly better than Utah. Given that they played them in Laramie and that Utah sucks, I’m not sure that’s all that reassuring.
Last week, the narrative was that Utah is the class of the Big 12 and now this week they suck. This entire line of discussion plays exactly into what I said about this being a week to week conference.

Eh - I never believed in them. They had played absolutely no one. Then they played a good P4 team and got smoked.

Yep! I don't think anyone should worry about anything but winning each week like Arizona State did last year

That's the million dollar question even he mentioned at the game. It's about consistency. If Staub looked like.he did against Delaware at Houston, he would be a lock to start. Salt remains consistent, he will play this one out with all conference honors.

That was reinforcement for what I think about the loyalty to Mata and not using Buck as a weapon like we used to use Mason Crosby
3 points and a touchback is better than even a deep punt because we have had the opponent at the 2-yard line multiple times and they just drive right out of there anyway

Feels like this team is 3 very good players away from being a Top 25-35 fringe team. A DL, LB, and probably a DB. I just don't think we have the guys to get enough stops or if we had an elite QB to win shootouts.
If Oatis were playing at max capacity, and we could somehow recruit a talented linebacker, and then our lost 5* Cormani McLain was out there with DJ

From what I’ve heard, Pat still called the game but they emphasized Salter being himself and he got really comfortable.
Watching the well off video, you could see it in his face and mannerisms that he was playing tight and nervous to start the game but when things started going well he had some swagger and played loose and trusted his teammates on deep throws. Hopefully he just knocked the dust off and is good to go and it's not a week to week thing of needing to get his confidence up.

I said something similar the last couple weeks. This defense is totally different if we would have been able to keep a hold of Hill-Green and Colton Hood.

Those two and a healthy Sammy Sacks and we are a LOT better.

I think this defense can still get a lot better with some consistency on the DL, Sammy healthy, and figuring out our safety situation somehow.
