Tosh Lupoi - DC Alabama

If he isn't the one calling plays I could see him making a move. Give him total control about $800,000 a year and maybe a move back out West would interest him. It would certainly seem like a good move if he wants to be a head coach at some point.
He makes $1.1 million now. So you're going to decrease his salary and give him a worse defense to work with!??!

Quite a pitch.

I don't know those fans, and that's always such a fluff argument Indiana. The point being, there's not two co-DCs listed, there is one. Exactly like at UW.

To Sink's point, there are a lot of titles thrown out there to keep guys "moving up" and justifying salaries and/or guarantees (especially at state schools), but when MM made Chev a co-OC, it was clearly a demotion to Lindgren. Tosh's appointment wasn't like that, there was a vacancy to fill.

Saban has been keeping the DC job within the family. Saban owns that side of the ball. The last two guys are now head coaches at big jobs. He chose to promote (with both title and $$$) Tosh Lupoi as the next guy. Saban has the budget and cache to go get anyone in America. Because Saban has "his way" and is a DC guy, there should be no doubt that Saban does NOT hire some big name guy from a different system. He wants someone from within his defensive system, that is 100% up to speed on that system, who he feels can do the job. He picked Tosh.

So either he thinks a lot of Tosh or he had an empty rolodex of guys from his defensive system floating around who were available?

this is spot-on. saban has as close to unlimited resources and power to hire whomever the **** he wants. ****, he brings in guys with destroyed reps and they gladly do it just for the chance to worship at his feet and rebuild their resumes. but, he owns and has always owned the defensive side of the ball. i have watched tape of him in practice. he isn't some old school dude in a tower with a bull horn. he is hands-on coaching the defense. tosh has apparently proven that he can execute the saban play, the saban way. that is a pretty damned good background.

sure, he's young and never been a hc. but, maybe, his upside is worth the intensified risk.

Yeah, you are going to take less money when you leave Alabama. Is is a promotion in terms of responsibilities and a step forward to getting back out West where he is from.

For example, Derrick Ansley was making around $400,000 as the DB coach for Alabama last year and he left to become the DC for CSU initially which ended up paying $325,000.

I think Saban could have gone out and hand picked his DC if he wanted to, but decided to promote Tosh from Co-DC to full time DC and playcaller this year. I get the questions will be there, but I don’t see how there is any real difference between Tosh and Lake in this regard.
The difference to me is that Lake isn’t working for a defensive minded head coach who clearly runs that side of the ball so I assume Lake has more control over his unit, but you’re right that both are in some kind of a co-coordinator arrangement. Lake was also a P5 assistant while Tosh was still playing college ball but admittedly their resumes aren’t drastically different.

Fair enough. I view 10 years as a P5 assistant coach, including 2 years as a Co-Coordinator/Full time Coordinator is plenty of experience. Contrast that with Ryan Day, who only has 9 years of P5 experience (2 NFL years along with that).

I disagree with you on points one and two. The fact that there is a guy with the title "co-DC" should be enough to let you know there is more than one DC. On point two, a lot of Alabama fans believe that Pete Golding is doing the scheming and calls on gameday.

This would be a very risky higher and I don't have a lot of faith that it would work out. As others have said, I believe Tosh can recruit with the best of them, but there is no indication that he is ready to be a head coach at a P5 school.

There’s no indication that any coordinators are ready to be head coaches! You get that **** from the media, you can either coach or you can’t. Every year there’s a “hot candidate.” Some people are head coaches, some aren’t, you don’t know unless someone tries it. I remember how ready josh McDaniels was, boy was that a good experiment!

Everything you just said is pure speculation. Nobody has any inside on either of these 2 candidates. They have the same position and have been coordinators for roughly the same amount of time. You can like one more the other but neither is wildly more qualified than the other based off the limited information we actually know.

Of course it’s speculation - what do you think we’re doing here?

To$h is a POS. He’ll immediately improve your program because he is an elite recruiter.... Then, he’ll sell you out as soon as he can get a bigger job, or he’ll get fired for cause and you’ll be hit with crippling NCAA sanctions.

My strong impression from Cal fans is that Tosh was at one point your favorite son who you wanted to eventually take the reins from Tedford. Then he became the guy you mostly blame for things collapsing at the end of the Tedford years due to the APR problems and whatnot with all the political issues that caused -- only to see him jump ship to Washington when things got tough. So you used to love him and now you hate him.

I don't know that you're wrong. I also don't know that he hasn't grown up a lot in the last 5 years.

I expressed similar concerns in the Lake thread. But I see them being the same because while Petersen is not the Defensive Mind at UW, Kwiatkowski is, and he remains there, although he seems to have ceded the main title to Lake. All of that is very interesting, but it still seems clear that Kwiatkowski built the D at Boise and built the D at UW, and still has a lot of input if not most of the control. Hard to tell.

But in either case, you'd be getting hard working rising star Defensive guys who've worked in A+ systems, who are known as ACE recruiters. I can think of riskier options so count me in on either!

You’re basing your entire argument against 1 candidate against based on something you think you know but don’t actually.
Look guy, most people here are basing their opinions on these candidates off what they learn in a quick google search or on Wikipedia. If you have inside info on any of these candidates we’d all love to hear it, and if not you can speculate and opine like the rest of us or f**k off, I don’t really care.

Yeah, I mean there are question marks with every candidate and that’s why they aren’t head coaches right now - it’s RG’s job to get comfortable with the unknowns during the process and I have faith he will.

Lol okay. What you said is about as astute as me saying, “I like Lupoi because someone once saw him at the movies and I bet he likes the avengers and I think anyone who likes the avengers is cool.”

Again. For the 3rd time. All I was saying is that nobody actually knows the depth of Lakes experience as DC so it’s unfair to speculate and say one candidate is more qualified than the other when we don’t even actually know what it is they’re 100% doing as DC’s.

Yeah, I'm not privy to "coaching circles" nor am I in tune with who other fan bases believe is "really in charge" of their offense or defense. All I know is that Lake and Tosh are both going to be P5 Head Coaches within the next year or two, and both would be great hires for CU right now. Tosh has the better recruiting resume, in large part because he's been at Alabama for 4 years, but we all know they can both recruit the Pac 12 footprint. IMO, that is the biggest need for CU right now, and part of the reason I lean Tosh is because he is/was a DL guy and he has a history of pulling blue chip recruits at every position, while Lake's resume consists of almost exclusively DBs. I'm not saying Lake would ignore other positions, but I do feel like Tosh is the more proven recruiter and for sure knows his **** in the trenches.

Comparing the tenure and who each coached under is the same as commenting on their movie preference? Sure.

And it’s unfair to speculate?? What am I going to hurt Tosh’s feelings? I got news for you, I’m going to keep speculating and I’ll probably speculate even harder now.

We had a nice DB class lined up and I think much of it is salvageable. We haven't had much for DL class in my Buff lifetime (2000's forward). We could use some big dudes!

Elite DBs are great to have, but if CU is ever going to contend for a Pac 12 Championship or CFP bid, the DL needs to be just as good, if not better than the Secondary.

I'm firmly on the Lupoi bandwagon. There's a reason opposing fans absolutely hate his guts. He's good at his job...

This hire puts CU on the front page for a bit and is a big story IMO. Recruits immediately take notice. He's got experience in the SEC and Pac 12. RG is going to put whoever is the next coach in a position to succeed because this hire is his legacy. The money will be there to put together a good start.
