Official Buffs @ Oregon Game Thread

Not reading through the entire thread, but here are my observations:

1. Montez remains mediocre to below average
2. The OL has A LOT of work to do in pass pro against good teams
3. The defensive issues are absolutely schematic as much as personnel.

To add color to #3... They have managed to make Davion Taylor a very JAGy type of player by putting him in the Star role that requires a lot of coverage. He can’t cover to save his life.

They managed to turn an all conference ILB (Landman) into an overall JAG as well by forcing him into coverage as much as they have.

Absolutely zero pass rush. Partly personnel, mostly scheme.

Constant zone coverage with guys who have zero feel for zone coverage. Guys look completely lost on every play. Lining up wrong, not having enough guys to cover the numbers to their side, playing 7-10 yards off on short yardage situations, and giving up wide open catches under the zone.

As I said from week one, this staff is forcing a square peg into a round hole with their scheme and the personnel. They simply don’t have the dudes to run this system and it shows in a big way.

The good news is that I believe they are forcing this defense in year one because they are playing the long game here and making sure everyone is immersed in it for when they finally get the guys they need to execute it.

Oh, and did I mention that Montez was horrible, yet still played into the 4th quarter, even though they were down by 5 TDs? This staff doesn’t seem anymore inclined to play backup QBs than the last.

If one of those two was a clear #2, hed have played a lot tonight. We're in the market for a grad transfer at QB.

The OL definitely wasn't great, but I thought they had their moments where Montez clearly had plenty of time and then just didn't make a decision. Given the TV view, I have no idea if anyone was open downfield, but sure seemed like plenty of time for something to happen.

The Montez thing seems to be the standard operating procedure of all coaching staffs across the country. I guess it's just a fan thing to value getting backup QBs a little game time. Who knows. Even if they don't give a **** about developing Lytle, don't you take Montez out if anything so he doesn't get injured in garbage time?

Hopefully you're right about the defense and this being the long play. Georgia obviously runs this scheme with some level of success, but they also recruit in the top 3 of the country year in year out, so we might need to be fluid on the scheme front. Getting no pass rush combined with large zones with LBers chasing guys around in pass defense doesn't seem to work out well.

Yeah I thought the line played OK for the most part, but more penalties and missed blocks as the game went on had him scrambling for his life. Granted, Montez also did his same old routine of not stepping up and rolling out into more pressure.

As for the defense, I said during week one this scheme didn’t fit the personnel. They are asking guys to do things they simply can’t do. I know the scheme works, but they need to have a Star who can’t be a LB against the run and a legit cover S against the pass. They need CBs who can play zone coverage, but with a higher football IQ. They need ILBs who can flat out do everything, and they need individual DL/DE who can play their run responsibilities well AND get after the passer.

Edit: At one point Wells was covering a RB 20 yards downs the field??? WTF?

Will they get the guys to implement the defense they want to run? CU must start getting more talented recruits and if that means replacing certain coaches so be it.

Came very close to betting this, thought-22 was too much. Guess that’s why they have those big hotels etc...

If anything good can come out of this maybe it’s that the coaching staff will recognize the extreme need for better recruits. Up until this game there were some strong hints (e.g. losing to AF at home) but the nature of this beat down made it clear. Sure Oregon got a lot of favorable bounces, but we were going to lose by 3 TDs even if they’d gone our way. Now, how to get those top players - that’s the real test for the staff over the next few years. Any gameday scheme works better if players are better.

Yes, they just realized that last night...before that they were just determined to avoid all the highly rated ones.

We had to be up early this morning. The way the game was going after the first quarter, we decided to go to bed. Ouch upon reading that score this morning...tough night. Glad to see that Viska is back (last I heard before bed).

Granted whoregon has a very good defense, but it seems like offense play calling and execution is regressing. I hope Tucker doesn’t hold too much loyalty to Johnson.

The coaches know they need better players. The problem, as always, is signing them. This program is a long way away from being able to compete, athlete for athlete, with programs like Oregon. They have to start winning consistently to start getting the attention of players of that caliber. So far away from that right now.

I’m not totally throwing the current staff under the bus because most of our guys have a few years in the program and MT has been here all of ten months. Culture, in a business, in a football program, in any vacuum, is exceptionally difficult to change and takes time. This is complicated when you have limited resources and, therefore, can make only incremental improvements over time. We see this first hand in some of our assistants.

So, assuming things don’t totally go down the toilet, I’m willing to give MT at least another three years after this one. BUT the level of incompetence we saw last night is so gross. I get that we lack depth, however, rarely do I see other P5 teams put on such dazzling displays of WTF. There are a lot of G5 teams with significantly less talent that would have given the Ducks a better run last night.

I still think a significant chunk of that fault goes to MM and company, but some lands at the feet of the current staff. As TScheck said, Taylor and Landman are not being utilized well, at all, and that is just one example.

Maybe it is just CU fan mentality, but it feels like we manage to crap the bed more than anyone. Apologies for Mtn post.

Everyone knows we have an overall talent deficiency, but I keep hearing about hoping we can win with the good ones we do have, as if maybe the current talent could be ok if we just play well. Nope - we may win half our games and play in a bowl, but we aren’t ok with that. Yes the bowl would be important to build on with recruits. We’ve only one more than 2 conference games once in 8 years of PAC12. It’s a treadmill with a low baseline.

The new staff was essential. I’m concerned that if we don’t win next week at WSU we may slide downhill the rest of the way. Although surely not UCLA at home, they’re on their own slide.

UCLA is on the road

Obviously that’s the big question. If everything goes right with the rest of this class, that will be a decent start, but Tucker will have to take a long look in the mirror this offseason and decide if they can truly run this defense in year 2 or if they need to make changes. CU is 1 of 3 FBS teams to give up 30+ points in every game this season. As azbuff said, there are G5 programs who would have given Oregon a more competitive game.

It doesn’t really matter if he was in front of his defenders and the pass hit him in the hands... twice
Why is this so hard for some of you? It has nothing to do with hitting Russell in the hands. He was scrambling for his life running to his left. He threw up a prayer to a player who was not open, even for a second. It was an ill advised pass that has defined Montez' career. CU was going to lose the game, but that play completely turned the game. That is perfect example of how a turnover is the absolute worst thing to happen in that situation, which is what happens when you scramble to your left, running for your life, throwing a complete prayer up in the air. You have one more play, at least give yourself a chance.
