Lookalike & Game thread - #25 (AP poll)/ #28 (NET rankings) Men's bball hosts #53 (NET) Utah (Boulder, Sunday, 1/12, 4:00 PM MT, ESPNU)

I'd debate you here. I think we're in, and I think Quack Attack is too. Arizona, Utah, Stanford (who the NET LOVES), Oregon State, Washington, and USC all could play their way in.
The selection committee has seen this show before. Six teams from the weakest big conference? Don’t think so. Plus, there are A LOT of conference games to play. No team in this conference is a lock.

The SEC is ranked behind the PAC-12 right now according to NET rankings. The ACC, Pac-12, and SEC are all incredibly close. this is not the last couple years where the PAC was clearly the weakest major conference. And Oregon is absolutely an NCAA lock right now.

The ACC is down too-North Carolina (who lost to Clemson at home yesterday) is 8-8.

The ACC is down too-North Carolina's 8-8. Virginia is on the NCAA bubble heading into conference play. I'm not buying Louisville yet. Duke's 15-1, but that blemish came to Stephen F. Austin of all people. Oregon's an NCAA lock, and I'd argue we are too. We've got 2 wins that match theirs, and if OSU at home is our worst loss......

Weakest conference? Clemson beat the tar heels yesterday. I think your pac 12 take is off.

I said this after we beat Clemson-that's going to be a win that talking heads will be talking about when they're talking about Colorado come March. They're not going to win the ACC, but they could beat Duke or Louisville at home or make a run in the ACC tourney.

Finally made it to a game; nice one to see. I got to meet Lisa Van Goor before the game, and she was saying how Sox Walseth was a great man. He was a classic gentlemen; he wouldn't allow any girls to carry the bags, which Lisa expected to do as a freshman. The men's team did not have this same experience though...Sox Walseth's son seems like a genuinely nice man too; apparently a lot of Sox rubbed off on his kids. It was cool to see the old timers hanging out and enjoying the program. They all seem to really like Tad too. His efforts in embracing the past is much appreciated.

Great game - Battey...wow.

I got to know Tad a bit right after he came back to Greeley (played for his predecessor at UNC)-hell of a basketball coach and an even better man.

BOULDER — That's how you protect your home floor.

One week after allowing Oregon State to rally down the stretch and escape from Boulder with a win, Tad Boyle's Colorado Buffaloes left no such opening for Utah. The Buffs were hot from the start Sunday and never cooled off, dominating the Utes from beginning to end in a 91-52 win at the CU Events Center.

The 25th-ranked Buffs improved to 13-3 overall and 2-1 in Pac-12 play while the Utes fell to 10-5, 1-2.

"That was as complete a performance by our team as we've had all year," Boyle said. "It just shows you what the ceiling of this team is going to be, and that's what we're going to need as we go through this league. This team took a step forward tonight and I'm really, really proud of them."

The Buffs did indeed put forth a complete effort on both ends of the floor.

Sophomore Evan Battey and junior Tyler Bey each had double-doubles for the Buffs, with Battey finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season while Bey notched his seventh of the season and 26th of his career with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Point guard McKinley Wright IV flirted with a triple-double before finishing with 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and no turnovers, and D'Shawn Schwartz added 14 points and five rebounds.

Defensively, the Buffs throttled the Utes, holding the Pac-12's leading scorer, Timmy Allen, to a season-low seven points on 2-for-11 shooting. Allen entered the game averaging 21.1 points per game, with his previous low 14 points.

Utah did not have a player in double digits, as Riley Battin led the Utes with eight points.

The Buffs dominated in virtually every statistical category. CU shot 38-for-64 from the field (59.4 percent) while holding the Utes to just 19-for-54 shooting (35.2 percent). Colorado held a commanding 43-23 rebounding lead, including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points, and the Buffs committed just nine turnovers while forcing 13 Utah miscues.

"We showed up but we got our teeth punched in," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "That's a veteran team that is very physical. I thought we got exposed in the level of physicality … They wanted it more."
...

WHAT IT MEANS: Colorado bounced back from a disappointing loss to Oregon State in a big way. The Utes are a young team, but still one that owns wins over Kentucky, Minnesota, Oregon State and BYU. As Boyle noted, the Buffs showed what kind of team they can be when they play well on both ends of the court.

CU STANDOUTS: Sophomore Evan Battey and junior Tyler Bey each had double-doubles for the Buffs, with Battey finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season while Bey notched his seventh of the season and 26th of his career with 11 points and 12 rebounds … Point guard McKinley Wright IV had 16 points, eight assists and seven rebounds … D'Shawn Schwartz added 14 points and five rebounds.

KEY STATISTICS: The Buffs held Utah to 35.2 percent shooting, including a 7-point, 2-for-11 night from the Pac-12's leading scorer, Timmy Allen … CU shot nearly 60 percent from the field (38-for-64) … The Buffs held a commanding 42-24 edge on the boards that included 14 offensive rebounds that led to a 14-4 edge in second-chance points … Colorado also forced 13 turnovers and committed just nine, leading to a 23-7 edge in points off turnovers.

NOTEWORTHY: CU's Wright has 36 assists and just seven turnovers in his last four games. "I've just slowed down," Wright said. "I've been slowing down and making the easy play. I've been hitting the first free man and not trying to squeeze passes into small holes." Wright also moved into 26th on CU's all-time scoring list (1,127), passing Spencer Dinwiddie and Burdette Haldorson. Wright also moved into a tie with Marcus Hall for fourth on CU's all-time assist list (423) … The 39-point victory margin was the largest for CU over Utah since a 73-33 win in Boulder on Dec. 31, 2011, in the first Pac-12 game for both schools … The Buffs' 38 field goals are the most in a conference game since hitting 41 in a 105-81 win over Iowa State on Jan. 5, 1991 … The Buffs are shooting 52.6 percent over the last four games (123-234).

QUOTEWORTHY: "The way we're going to make up for the Oregon State game is by going on the road and getting some stuff done. That opportunity comes Thursday in Tempe and then we get another shot on Saturday in Tucson. It's a big road trip for us if we want to compete for a conference championship. You have to be able to win on the road and there's no time like the present." — CU coach Tad Boyle

NEXT UP: The Buffs hit the road next week for a pair in the desert, beginning with a 7 p.m. game Thursday at Arizona State (Pac-12 Network), followed by a 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Arizona (Fox).

The NET rankings between the SEC and P12 are close currently. There’s a lot more to go in conference play and conference tournaments. In choosing between SEC teams and P12 teams, I don’t think the P12 gets the benefit of the doubt at the end of the day.

Oregon is currently in. Great. Three more teams from the P12 have a shot too.

Edit: four teams from P12 that are likely if current form holds through conference... Oregon, Stanford, Arizona, & Colorado. Could see ASU buck out a team like Stanford or even Colorado.

5 Ranked teams yesterday lost to unranked teams yesterday I believe. Lots of b-ball to be played and the PAC is actually showing pretty well. There will be 5 or more teams from the conference in the tourney this year. We are not being perceived or discussed as the weakest P5 conference.

Will search for odds online and we can bet.

“We just got our teeth punched in by a veteran team that’s very physical,” he said. “Life is hard. You have to be ready to compete. There’s some deficiencies in our game right now that we’ve got to clean up but there’s going to be nights like this. That’s the nature of sports in every game.”

also said CU had one of the best defenses in the country.

I like Coach K. I hate that. Respect there is keeping me from hating Utah like I should.

Here's another story to make you like Big K more (I just can't call him Coach K), and thereby hate yourself more... I went to the game with a friend-couple, and the wife's dad was on the court at halftime. Apparently when all the Sox players were getting on the court, Big K stood in the hallway as his team headed to the locker room and shook all of the CU alumni hands, thanking them. That blew my mind away - he's an opposing coach thanking random, old players for coming back to campus at a school/program he has no tie to. He's a good guy and class; in my mind the best coach in the conference.

Battey's offensive boards were hilarious. Skinny Utes were bouncing off him like

Ohio state is still ranked after 4 straight, just, bad games. Stanford on the other hand, and can't even get ranked. 4 teams if the PAC is lucky, no respect for the league.
It's BS though and I hope you end up being right.

Question to anyone, do you think Evan is finally being understood and respected by the officials for the player he is. The first time number 32 for the Utes got bounced and he looked at the ref, seemed like the ref looked down at him with a look of, yep that's a big man and your going to have to figure it out because I'm not going to help you out.
So often it's been Evan's first foul, or is it just wishful thinking

I think last night’s refs were better than what we usually see. Not many fouls called.

Stanford biggest win is Washington.. or OU?
Not gonna do it at this point in the year.

Funny thing is a win over Butler probably makes them top 15. The margin for error is that small with their schedule.

I think we can expect four teams minimum, which are those that you list at this time. And then, we can reasonably hope for a fifth team, like OSU or ASU. UW has talent...but who knows with them. Bigger picture - I agree with others that I think you're a bit too down on the conference this year. We had some really quality wins OOC as a conference. Sure, we missed some opportunities, but we did well. We also pass some eye tests. I predict five teams from the PAC in the tournament.

NET looks good before deep conference play. We’ll see how things shape in a month and a half. I think Colorado fans are not unbiased on this subject. Nationally the P12 has a lot to overcome perception-wise, even if the numbers are currently favorable.

Your argument seems to be that the pac12 has performed like a 5 bid league but won't be because of anti pac 12 bias due to poor performance in previous seasons.

That's an argument I guess, but a weird one to believe in strongly.

The selection committee is not AP voters and ESPN talking heads. In general, they get it right, and really don’t give a **** about national perception.

I am extra salty because I lost a lot of money in college football. Nyquil hasn’t set in yet. I’ll say this: I don’t think the selection committee gives P12 teams the benefit of the doubt. The conference got 3 last year, 3 in 2018, and 4 in 2017 after the record 7 in 2016. Y’all believe that the committee “gets it right” and doesn’t have bias against the P12. Okay. The recent record doesn’t bear that out unless you get something extraordinary.

We’ll see. Hope the chickens y’all are counting all hatch.
