Sandusky update (more evidence against Joe P)

Yes. They learned to suppress the uncomfortable and get back to printing money as quickly as possible.
Talking about the NCAA right? The folks in Indy are more or less enabling this win first and anti- amaturisim culture. They claim to govern and regulate the universities but they follow the endorsement money first then amaturisim second. Every year a new violation and each year a disappointment in the NCAA's resolution.

1) Baylor - systemic cover up of and victim shamming of rape
2) Baylor - Murder
3) Penn St. - cover up of pedophile and rape
4) Mich. St. - enabling of a sick ****ing Dr.
4) North Carolina - systemic academic fraud
5) Stanford - Athletes for As classes
6) USC - Homes for Heisman's
7) Varsity Blues - stupid kids of the rich and famous
8) Arizona, Kansas, Creighton, et al. - sponsorship based recruiting
9) there are more, none come to immediately to mind

The NCAA has done near nothing to hold any of these universities accountable for these issues (of all folds). And sure as **** with the organization of the NCAA the Conferences will not stray from their members.

As much as it sucks as a CU fan to have to worry about an anti-athletic regent, I support the critical lens of academics, morality and athletics. The NCAA and Conference structure has no value beyond commercial endorsement deals and they are grasping to that model.

Many if not most of the events you have listed involve violence of the rights of both athletes and non-athletes including criminal behavior.

You could add the U of Miami incidents with drugs and hookers, the Ohio State abuse scandal, the Nebraska multiple assaults on women, etc.

The NCAA doesn't have the stomach to take real action against the offending institutions so there is no real deterrent and millions of dollars of incentives to cheat as long as it keeps them winning.

I've said this before and don't know when it will happen but at some point somebody or group of somebodies in the US House or Reps is going to see a chance to make a name for themselves by investigating college sports. They will have the power to compel witnesses to appear and to demand files be opened.

The justification will be Title IX violations. I expect the results to be a more direct supervision of college sports by an office in the Dept. of Education or Justice. Their hammer to force compliance will be the ability to withhold money from federal programs including certain federal research dollars, grants, and the biggest one which will scare schools to death, They will have the ability to restrict eligibility for federally guaranteed student loans.

Without student loan dollars most schools would be in a world of hurt.

I won't disagree with most of that list, but the NCAA hammered USC for #6.
Yep. Then Miami got caught doing the same thing. The Miami administrator had been on the NCAA panel that hammered USC, but then somehow Miami got a light slap on the wrist with that big scandal of the scam artist booster who was on the sideline for games, took players out on his yacht, got them or gave them money and gifts, etc. I'd replace #6 with Miami, which I think just had a 1 or 2 year period of no bowl games but didn't have those deep scholarship reductions USC was hit with.

****ing sawed off Nevin Shapiro, that's who you're talking about, right?

I wasn't really trying to rank these instances just was listing what came to mind. Agreed that SC did receive the most justice, which is sad because what they did bettered the lives of those "victims". In contrast the real victims of Baylor, Penn St, Mich St have seen little justice and a scared forever. And student athletes of Stanford, UNC and other schools have been the neglected and denied education for a professional life.

And what now OBJ was handing out cash to LSU players after the national championship.

Oregon lost 20 something official visits(people never think about how massive this is) 2 scholarships a year, and had the cloud hanging over them during "the process" for 2 years, for $200 in impermissible benefits and a violation of the form of MEDIA that recruiting information was provided. Willie Lyles used to LIVE with the Seastrunks before they even knew Oregon was a state, and yet that didn't meet the NCAA's criteria for "existing relationship". Meanwhile, DOZENS of Ohio St athletes received tens of thousands of dollars in benefits ranging from tattoos to car leases AND were implicated in a massive athletic department property theft and resale scheme and...Terrell Pryor got to play in the Rose Bowl because it was "an exhibition game", and...that's it. Nothing. People get upset every 12 years when some Olympic Games corruption surfaces, and that **** pales in comparison to what the NCAA does on a yearly basis. BTW, the benefits the Bush family received was estimated at around $10k...A MONTH.

Reggie Bush was underpaid.

Oh, poor Oregon. Uncle Phil should be ashamed.

It wasn't quite a tiny violation that got them in trouble with the NCAA

Paying shady characters to deliver recruits isn't exactly a minor issue.

But that's okay, if Oregon wants to pretend they are a major power they might as well try to cheat like one.

I don’t think murder is an NCAA violation unless it’s committed to benefit a team or player.

I'm pretty sure these can get lawyered around but the issues is more the NCAA doesn't have the "budget" or staff or whatever other excuse to exercise their bylaws. What they mean to say is we don't want any bad press on our organization.

1. Institutional Control and Responsibility

Bylaw 2.1.2
2.1.2 Scope of Responsibility. [*] The institution's responsibility for the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletics interests of the institution.

4. Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct

2.4 The Principle of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. [*]
For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation, but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program. It is the responsibility of each institution to: (Adopted: 1/9/96)

(a) Establish policies for sportsmanship and ethical conduct in intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational mission and goals of the institution; and

(b) Educate, on a continuing basis, all constituencies about the policies in Constitution 2.4-(a).

I'm surprised it took this long for something to finally came out of the known situation of them paying street agents and saying it was for "scouting reports".

You should read the actual document from the NCAA. Anyway, congrats on missing the simple point and being a **** at the same time.

You should know that understanding bluer schools get preferential treatment in no way translates to sympathy for the fowl team in the great northwest.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Certain posters here don't like when I rip on Pedo State and remind everyone about the school that covered up a serial child molester because they thought it would make the football program look bad.

Well, I'm going to keep ripping. Why, because the culture that made that possible still exist there.

Cover culture at PSU

Even after getting exposed for what they are PSU still leaves discipline, even for illegal and dangerous acts, of football players in the control of the head football coach.

The mentality that we don't talk to the police, that we don't cooperate because it might create a problem for a player that would result in him not being able to play, and this with a mentality that accepts and encourages hazing including fights and upperclassmen telling underclassmen that they are "going to Sandusky them" shows that they aren't taking anything seriously except protecting football related revenues.

Agreed. I still maintain that Penn St should NOT be allowed to have a football program. Not now, not ever. What happened and was permitted to continue happening was sick and far beyond a stupid game. The NCAA dropped the ball on having a pair

NCAA doesn't want to do anything and won't ever do anything.

We have seen the Penn State situation, Baylor, Michigan State, Ohio State, and many more with things that are criminal acts against innocent victims and the NCAA doesn't do anything. Again not cheating on a recruit, not falsifying an academic record, but actual serious criminal behavior.

I still believe that the end result with be some young congressional representative (or some) who want to make a name for themselves taking up the issue as a Title IX question.

Their solution will be an office in the Department of Education (or in Justice but more likely Education) with the authority to investigate including the authority to subpoena witnesses.

They will also have the ability to impose certain penalties on schools that impact federal funding. These include restrictions on federal educational funds, Pell Grants, and other federal tuition assistance programs. The huge one would be the ability to make a school ineligible to qualify students for federally guaranteed student loans. There are few colleges or universities in the nation that could survive that penalty for longer that one to two years.

Using this leverage they could force schools to change administrators, change policies, and even to employ independent oversight.

This was a criminal matter. The NCAA had no jurisdiction. They overstepped their authority. They had to pull back.

Pedo State is 0-5 this year. Karma ... it is a biatch.
