Eric Bieniemy - OC Kansas City Chiefs (NFL)

My question for EB would be- What’s keeping you here if you receive a NFL offer?

The worst thing we could do is hire a guy who is going to do the same thing.

If EB takes this job, stays for 2-3 years and leaves this thing in a better place (say a couple bowl appearances and a CCG loss a la Rhule at Baylor) than it is now when he goes back to the NFL, we'd all thank him for his service and root for him with whatever NFL team he leaves for. This isn't even a convo. To me, this job is his if he wants it.

EB would be a very uninspired choice, IMO. Might end up being a good choice, but I have a hard time getting past the unmitigated disaster the program was in the last time he was here. That’s probably unfair, but it’s the way I feel.

Valid, but he's got a doctorate in coaching. Completely different coach than he was last time, and I also blame Bohnhead for that.

Listen to the recent podcast with him. I think your mind will change. He is ready.

This, I think, is a very fair position to take.

A position of "NO" just isn't right.

Anytime I feel like my IQ is a little on the low side all it takes is a visit to all buffs to cheer me up and realize that while I may be dumb you people are a bunch of effing morons. If there is mutual interest then EB will be our next coach. Rick said he know's what he wants in a coach and EB has all those qualities that he's looking for, smart, tons of experience at the college and pro level, great recruiter, charismatic, one of the all time great buffs, spent the last few years working for the best coach in football. And best of all, he's failed. Looking at the number of posts you people have it's obvious you have no idea as what goes into to someone being successful. Please football Gods make this happen, we have spent decades in the wilderness getting our ass kicked, we've done our penance.

Best coach in football? Um ok.

That podcast with EB was great. I recommended it to everyone last week b4 all this crap went down. If you aren’t fired up when EB talks, I don’t know what to say.

Bienemy blows Tucker out of the water on everything except dance moves and shoe collection.

They both served multiple years as position coach and cordinators. I think EB has more experience.

EB has that experience in college and pros.
EB has a super bowl ring as a Cordinator.
They are both really strong recruiters.

I traditionally did not think EB showed much poise when talking to the media. However he has proven me dead wrong this year. Anyone with eyes and ears can see that he is polished and ready.

CU boosters already love him.

He was a far better player and did that at CU and that resonates. Especially right now.

He even has better ties to LA our main recruiting bed. I have never felt that Tuckers south recruiting will work here. It worked to pull a marginal few guys in but ultimately our answer for talent is LA. It's also the best time ever to recruit LA. Massive plus.

Plus for Tucker he wears shorts?

I'm a CU booster and I don't love him.
Like Embree, zero experience running an organization. Zero recent CFB experience.
Bienemy doesn't run the Chiefs offense. His organizational skills were on display here when he ran the offense under Embree. Not impressed.

He didn't even make a big impact with recruiting.

Fans in love with EB are living in the past. Running a CFB program requires skill sets we haven't seen EB show.

I'm sure it's been brought up but one thing about Bieniemy that gives me caution is it's pretty easy to look good as a position coach or OC when you have guys like Adrian Peterson, Mahomes, Kelce, and speedsters at WR.

You know Tucker coached in the NFL too right? As a DC under multiple head coaches. He even got an interim HC opportunity there.

EB does not have “more experience” that’s just false, Tucker has coached longer.

EB hasn’t recruited in nearly a decade so this idea that he’s somehow going to be a rainmaker in LA is, at best, debatable. He has ties? With who? I don’t doubt he has a personality that can be useful in recruiting but tap the brakes on the legend of Bieniemy as a recruiter In 2020.

EB was an unmitigated disaster his last tour of duty at CU. I’m sure he’s grown since that time and may be a better coach today but he’s worked under one coach since he left here and that coach completely controls the offensive side of the ball. I’ll admit that a lot of my feelings are based on what he did here last time but that’s not something we can just forget.

EB being the better player is wholly irrelevant.

The two years that Embree was head coach were awful, so I get the reservations with EB. Rick George knows this too and will make an informed decision. I will say that my recollection of the 2011-2012 seasons is that there was a bunch of interpersonal communication issues, massive talent issues on the roster, and a very poor DC choice. It’s a lot to lay at the feet of EB when he wasn’t head coach.

I agree that Tucker’s resume runs a bit deeper with DC roles under Saban, Smart, and in the NFL too. The biggest reservation I had with Tucker was that he was a terrible NFL DC (Bears fans consider him the worst they ever had and the defense immediately improved after he left). But, he was great under Saban and Smart, who are both excellent defensive coaches. In many ways, it’s similar to the problem EB has (all great as OC, but under Andy Reid, who is an excellent offensive coach).

I have zero concerns about EB as a recruiter/closer.

EB has a lot going for him as a coach.

First, I don't think we can discount the fact that he's a sports hero to Buffs fans and was an emotional leader of our national championship team, too.

As a coach, he has always been able to identify and develop RB talent on every level he has coached.

With OC, he was not good at CU. However, he has now trained under Andy Reid. Reid has a long history of being a great developer of offensive coordinators and EB did grow under him into the primary play caller this season.

I discount the whole "hot" thing with coaching names. That fluctuates and is often tied to circumstances. He's in a great circumstance right now. Mahomes makes coaches look good. But the thing about EB is that unlike some other coaches I have seen, he gets this and has always come from the player's perspective of it being about the talent more than the x's and o's. That's the right attitude to have for college football. The more talented team, if motivated, is rarely going to lose because it got out-schemed. He would emphasize recruiting like crazy.

My concerns are more in the area of how he treated players and other coaches when he was here last. Emotions were not well controlled. Maybe if it was his show it would be different. Maybe with the different leadership in the AD now things wouldn't be like that. Maybe there was a dynamic between him and Embree, with Embree so full of emotion and anger at the time toward how CU athletics had been managed for years, that channeled negatively and with the way things are now maybe that wouldn't be the case. Part of what went into that, too, was that they did not trust anyone else and did everything such as EB having to personally recruit every player. This brings up my concerns with organizational development and management. Seemed a lot of things were driven by emotion last time and that there was a lack of patience and confidence in decisions -- such as when they spent an entire offseason secretly installing the Gundy offense and then scrapped it forever to go back to the old system when the offense struggled in the 1st half of the opening game. So many things were just so bad - and confrontational - during the Embree/EB time that I really have trouble seeing EB as a good fit to run a college program. That's despite everything I like about him. I actually think that dealing with adults he sees as peers within a defined organizational structure like he has in the NFL is a much better fit for EB.

First.
Any coach that comes in is now going to have to keep recruits and recruit against the back drop of what Tucker just did. It is now apparent to me and to everyone that as soon as a CU coach shows an ounce of traction a truck of cash from the big 10 and sec will show up. EB as a former coach and player who bleeds black and gold has the best defense against this. Who ever we hire will need to address this or they will not be able to recruit. Tucker really shat on us in this sense and no one here should dismiss this.

2nd.
EB has a super bowl ring as an offensive cordinator. Tuckers pro accomplishments does not compare to that. EB has the ring. Where is tucker's ring?

Third.
The idea that EB is the same as he was as an offensive cordinator here last time is false. He earned a promotion from Andy Reid.

4th
He was promoted by Reid for a reason and won the Superbowl to prove it. No Andy Reid does not give out cordinator jobs because he likes you. The idea that EB is just promoted to that level and sits on the sideline is silly. I trust Reid above all of you.

I think he is getting judged squarely based off of 12. Overlooked is the fact that he did actually recruit pretty well given what he inherited.

6. He does have ties to LA. You can dismiss that but it's TRUE.

7. Being a great player does not make a great coach but it sure can help them. I know personally from my own form of recruiting I do that nothing is more powerful than personal testimony and he has that in spades.

Meh. Tucker was an unmitigated disaster as DC in Chicago. Doesn't mean he didn't learn a lesson.

I do think EB needs to show with a strong plan that includes ideas for Coordinators. If he can show up and has a Strong DC candidate with his I think he will blow things away.
We are long way from 2012. I think Embree/Bienemy are taking a lot of flack for what happened and some of that is right some of it isn't. That situation was really bad. Our situation now is really good.
Even intangible things like USC/UCLA being down play in our favor.

Great point here. Just read some articles on Mel Tucker and his time with the Bears as DC. Scary part is that their complaints seem to be the same bad defensive problems we saw this year. I think tucker isn’t a defensive genius at all from what I read. He jumped around and no one but us wanted him to head coach. Now Michigan state took him away and perhaps we are actually lucky. Bienemy is a true Buff and would be a massive upgrade from Tucker.

Yikes, where to begin...

Super Bowl Rings -Jim Jeffcoat had one, Charlie Weis had three. You know who else doesn’t have a ring? Saban, Swinney, Urban, and on and on... you’re focusing on the wrong qualities IMO.

And please tell me about his LA ties, I’m genuinely curious. And I’m talking about his LA ties in 2020, not 15-20 years ago when he was a lights out recruiter here and at UCLA.
