Eric Bieniemy - OC Kansas City Chiefs (NFL)

Maybe you’ve hit on where I diverge from a lot of the people who favor EB for the job - I agree he has a magnetic, fiery personality but I’m not entirely convinced he is a born leader.
Of all the question about EB that is the most outrageous.
I am guessing you are too young to have watched him play. I know a player does not always equal coach. There are some guys though who have "It" in terms of leadership. Never has that been more true than with Bienemy. He rallied that team to a National Championship.

If anything last time he came he showed up with too much energy and juice. I think he has better honed that energy and learned when to turn it on and off with Chiefs. It why I think he is ready.

And that would be the first time in history that a head coach spoke highly of one of his assistants.
You don't promote a guy, just to appease a dude or the media.
You also don't win a super bowl without all the pieces of your organization carrying their weight. You just don't.
Reid has had success before EB, but he won a SUPER BOWL with him as his Offensive Cordinator.

If you have any doubts on EB being ready to run his show, listen to the podcast he did with pipes and that snake Tucker.

High risk, high reward hire. I think I can be talked into believing he has grown as a coach since his last stint here. I still have my doubts.

I’m being pretty clear that these are just my opinions, I realize many people would love EB as head coach, I just disagree.

But please tell me more about Bieniemy in 1990 and how that matters in 2020.

I’m sure he’s done a great job in the role Reid put him in, but being a college HC is an entirely different job than being an NFL OC or RB coach. I don’t think he’s the right choice, you do, that’s fine.

Your reservations are totally fair.

My issue is that you of all things you called out his leadership ability. Leadership is a set of hard to define qualities and damn near impossible to teach. Generally either someone is a leader or they are not.

EB is a leader.

I understand other pokes at him. You want to question his organization ability sure, but you can't question that dudes Leadership. Holy heck that is not something he is lacking. Dude is the freaking Joan of Arc of the National Title winning team.

See and I think you’re conflating being a good motivator and being a good leader. He’s certainly the former, but I question the latter. Chev is the similar in that regard.

You can’t separate organizational ability from leadership yet you seem to be doing that in the post above. You also keep going back to his playing days as if that matters one bit in 2020. Hagan was on that team - you want him as HC?

The only concern I have with EB is him leaving for an NFL gig after a year here.
I really don't think he would do that to CU.

Also, the only way to get rid of your fear completely is to hire someone you know that the NFL and more well-heeled college programs wouldn't be interested in until he had learned on the job and proved himself at CU.

It's a hiring constraint that I pray RG isn't putting on this search.

I'm sure RG is going to cover that ground with him when and if there's an interview. He's definitely ready, and I think our kids would love playing for him.

I am not sure how much of a role Bieniemy played in recruiting but some of the players from his brief time here were crucial for that 2016 run. That is a potential positive.

Biggest concern for me with Bieniemy is his reputation for losing his composure, especially on players. Has anyone heard any of his former players address his relationship with the players other than Kelce and Peterson?

If not zero, I have about 1% concern about this. Why are you trying to come up with fake issues from ten years ago?
He's not the only one. That seems to be the only actual concern people here have about him. That was 10 years ago, though, and while Kelce has publicly said he brings a very fiery and aggressive personality to the offense and playcalling, they love him and he makes them better. I agree with you, I don't consider it to be an actual issue at all.

I think it would definitely be an issue for some players, but that's OK. Pretty soon that stuff sorts itself out and those players don't come to play for the guy.

You know Tucker coached in the NFL too right? As a DC under multiple head coaches. He even got an interim HC opportunity there.

EB does not have “more experience” that’s just false, Tucker has coached longer.

EB hasn’t recruited in nearly a decade so this idea that he’s somehow going to be a rainmaker in LA is, at best, debatable. He has ties? With who? I don’t doubt he has a personality that can be useful in recruiting but tap the brakes on the legend of Bieniemy as a recruiter In 2020.

EB was an unmitigated disaster his last tour of duty at CU. I’m sure he’s grown since that time and may be a better coach today but he’s worked under one coach since he left here and that coach completely controls the offensive side of the ball. I’ll admit that a lot of my feelings are based on what he did here last time but that’s not something we can just forget.

EB being the better player is wholly irrelevant.

If I recall correctly, that "unmitigated disaster" got commitments from Lindsay, Sefo + others? One season they recruited the 39th (12th in the PAC12, oh how those days are gone for the PAC) ranked class in the nation. CU only sniffed that high with this incoming class. Look at the recruiting and see how many of those kids from 2016, committed EB/Embo.

Taking over the Hawkins dumpster fire was difficult-- the team had no talent. The 1st year, they won some games and the offense was much better than the defense. The 2nd year, they had no QB. Plus, the PAC12 was a heck of a lot stronger nationally than now.
