Eric Bieniemy - OC Kansas City Chiefs (NFL)

Nope. EB is just a fiery guy who some players love and many others can't stand. OC is pretty much a ceremonial title. Very little involvement in game planning, practice prep, in-game adjustments or play calling. Andy Reid owed a favor or something.

(The above is basically what a good number of Buffs fans seem to believe for some reason.)
I know you’re being sarcastic but that’s not “basically” what fans believe (at least not me).

My fear with EB is that he thrives in a very specific environment - when he’s got a strong head coach who is the unquestioned leader of the team/program and EB can fill a very important role supporting that coach. He didn’t have that leadership with Embree and it was a disaster.
The coaching profession is littered with coaches who were excellent support pieces as coordinators but were awful when they elevated to the lead role. I look at Belichick’s coaching tree and see defensive guys like Romeo Crennel, Jim Schwartz, Eric Mangini, Matt Patricia, or Brian Flores who were much better DCs than HC. They weren’t ceremonial coaches either but they bombed.

This may be unfair to EB since he hasn’t been given the opportunity to prove himself one way or the other, but saying people think EB is only in his job because Reid owes a favor and being the OC is ceremonial totally misrepresents the dissenting view here.

You dont think he has a good idea what it takes to coach college football? Gimme a break
I think 2 things:

1) Head coaches always say nice things about their staff, and
2) Andy Reid knows a lot about football but I would not rely solely on the opinion of someone who last coached in college when The Cosby Show was still on tv of who is or isn’t ready for a college head coaching job.

I dont think anybody would rely solely on that. But his opinion is going to carry weight about anything football

I don’t know if EB is the right or wrong choice. I do know that purely in the interim of the next six months, there is not a better choice among the realistic candidates. That alone isn’t a reason to hire him but it is a factor in his favor.

I initially recoiled hard from the idea of EB but I’ve come around some. Part of my initial recoil was for EB; something like “c’mon man, spare yourself.” The other was the Embree years.

I’ve come to realize two things. First, EB would only consider this job because it is CU, not vice versa like Chev or Walters, or even Embo in 2011.

Second, almost all coaches have a bad stint here or there. MT was awful as DC for the Bears. We were EB’s skid mark. But if you took the names off the resumes of MT and EB, who has the better resume? I don’t really think it is close.

I’m not lobbying for EB, but I’d feel a little excitement for it. And that’s a world of difference from where I was two days ago.

Sure but my initial reaction was in response to this:

which seemed to imply if Reid says he’s ready that’s all that matters. That’s foolish IMO.
You made the comment about organizational ability and leadership. Who would know best if he has those skills, Andy Reid. I didn't say to hire him based on that alone but in the the course of the thread you seem to want to ignore who employs him and their determination of his abilities. Reid and the Chiefs leadership are the only ones that know how much total responsibility EB has in the day to day running of the team, what his game day preparation is like and how much he is involved in player evaluations. All that translates to all levels of football. RG and LC would have to make the evaluation if he is the right fit for the team at this time.

I agree with that but that‘s very different than “just call Andy and ask if he’s ready”.

In viewing all the remarks, it looks like EB did something to Sinkratz. Anyone know if EB: (1) stole his girlfriend; (2) shat in his beer; (3) perhaps ordered a pizza while Sinkratz was teaching class on "our time" or (4) he is perhaps a member of the University Hill Neighborhood Association, afraid that EB may move in.

I'm still hopeful EB will bail the Buffs out, he seems like the best one under these particular circumstances. The players need fire, passion, intensity, toughness, emotion, (this is what Tucker was preaching all last season, so why start over?), a player's coach, and someone with experience/name recognition. He won a recent SB Ring. Also, RG and Lance Carl have strong control overseeing the overall football program. This could be just the exact environment EB could thrive in. He would be someone to immediately pick up these boys spirits and instill an us v. them mentality.

I know that there are dissenters, but put your candidates who are better and explain why under these particular circumstances?? CU does not need some old FBS, MW rebuild guy again. Who else can they get that somehow meet your criteria??

The only concern I have with EB is him leaving for an NFL gig after a year here.

I share that concern too, I think it would be 2-3 years. However, EB does completely bleed black and gold, and always has. This is more about him sacrificing for his alma matter--following in the footsteps of his beloved college coach. I think those issues can be mitigated by who he can or is able to keep as asst. coaches. He could groom Chev...Summors/Walters. Also, so long as RG/LC have their fingers on the pulse, that can mitigate the impacts of an early departure.

From knowing and watching him play, even when he sat a year, I have rarely seen a guy with as much passion, energy, and fortitude (he fumbled like three times against the Corn, collected himself and scored 4 TD's in the 4th quarter). He has the "It."
He fumbled 5 times and lost 4, then scored his 4 TD’s as I stood in the stands loving that 4th quarter at the concrete graveyard!!!

Props for working in the "Fast Times" joke.

I realize it’s sacrilege to not fall in love with the idea of EB getting the job because he’s a Buff legend and all, but I just don’t see him as a successful head coach, sorry. You disagreeing with me actually makes me feel better about that position to be honest.

If he gets the job, I’ll support him and the team and hope that I am dead wrong, but in threads discussing potential coaching hires, I’ll share my opinion and not feel bad if my view of EB as a HC bothers you.

And I’ve shared lists of coaches I like in several threads now - they’re not hard to find and I don’t want to muddy a thread about EB with discussion of other coaches. So you’re welcome to go look those up before calling me out.

I think with EB you hope To ride his Super Bowl success into a huge recruiting bump. Then after a couple years of success he goes to the pros and Chiv or a Walters are Ready to take over
Just so long as it’s another Buff amirite?

I need to support Sinkratz.

EB can recruit. EB can motivate players. I think he’s a reasonable talent evaluator.

I don’t think he can teach college players an offense. His two years as OC here produced the worst offense I’ve seen in terms of players knowing what to do. They often didn’t know the play call, play book, or situation. It was chaos. He lacks a level of detail or communication that young players need.

I also don’t think people change that much over time. He’s still who he was.

I think he should stay in the NFL where he is thriving. I hope he gets a head coach job there. I think he’s much better suited to working with professionals.

If he does come to CU he’ll need seasoned, proven coordinators. Will CU have the cash for that? Does EB have the connections to assemble a staff? I’m skeptical.

@SINKRATZ Everything is cool. I was partly kidding around. You are entitled to your opinion. It is all for waste if he does not get offered or take the job anyways. RG, LC and EB will be making difficult decisions all the way around. All potential coaches have pluses and minuses. I like that if EB gets the job, you will support him and the team. I'll do the same, whoever it is. The fact is, CU is left in a difficult position.

If EB does get the job, I hope he keeps/CU can keep Chev and gives a fair chance to all of MT's assistants that desire to stay. I somewhat like the Walters idea, but I don't think this should be CU alums coaching U, CU needs a diverse coaching staff.

Not at all. I think both of them have HC abilities. I wouldnt say the same for say a guy like Hagan. I’m in the camp that Colorado will always be a jumping off point and not a destination. Forgive me for wanting to try and find someone who looks at this as their dream job. Much better odds of that if it’s a former buff

Sinkratz is entitled to his opinion. It’s not like EBs last run here was a success. As I’ve said, I think there is more to that story and it’s been 8 years, but it’s not like he’s just throwing crap against the wall.

The biggest fear is that you end up bringing in a legend and he fails. No one wants to go through that again. The stint 8 years ago doesn't help either, but almost all successful head coaches have had at least one piss poor job where they failed. What makes the coach is how they build and learn from that failure.

You think Hagan would make a good HC? Oy. I think if you’re limiting your pool to people who would view CU as their “dream job” you’re eliminating 99% of the coaches out there - why put ourselves at such a disadvantage?

This is pretty much where I am at. I loved EB the player, EB the RB coach, EB the OC was a mess. Given that in KC he is reportedly a ceremonial OC, with Reid calling the plays, well, I remain skeptical.

He can recruit like a house on fire, though, so there is that.

I actually want an offensive background in our next HC. Chev as OC under a Harrell/EB/Blake Anderson/Sark allows him to develop a lot more than he did in 2018 under MacIntyre.

I still haven't heard a compelling argument for why his stint under Embree in 2012 should matter in 2020. Yeah, he's the same person and coach so much so that he fell upward and became a Super Bowl winning OC

Should we look into JE as well? He has also learned a lot and is the #2 in SF under Shanahan. And they almost won the SB. And he developed a late round guy into PFF's highest rated NFL player. He's not titled as the OC (SF doesn't list an OC), but he's the AHC. Other than title I'd venture to guess JE and EB do similar things for their respective teams since EB doesn't call plays.

Like, surely this is a **** no right? But that's my issue, idk how much blame do I throw on JE and how much also for EB for 2011-2012. Was it mostly of JE's doing that it was a disaster? Was it a 1A 1B sort of deal with them?
