Official 2020 Fall Camp Thread

I expect Lytle (my guess personally) or Noyer to start the UCLA game, but I think Lewis will be starting by the time Utah is supposed to come in here on December 11.

This is a year 0 for at least me with this staff-no spring ball, very late coaching change, and COVID-19. I think Lewis will start at least 1-2 games, but I'm fine with the way the staff is handling him for now.
Thats quite the projection, especially considering that Lytle and Noyer will be improving throughout the season as well, with 1st team reps. Lewis is not what you think he is...at least not yet.

Noyer is an excellent tackler.
Which IS critical when new QBs throw balls to the other team.

I’m sure it’s been said a thousand time, but I think it has been coaching malpractice over, at least, the past three or four years that our backup QBs have gotten almost no game time work. How many times were Sefo and Montez still out there when the game was over? How many times did I hear even commentators say, in astonishment, “Well it looks like Sefo/Montez is coming back out...”?

I know a lot of people on the board are looking at this as a throw away year or year 0 for Dorrell & Co so let’s get started with the future but I don’t think that is how they see it.

Especially with how the schedule sets up they are going to go with who has the best chance to win football games now.
UCLA, @Stanford, ASU are all winnable games. If you are 3-0 headed into USC (and the publicity it gets for the program) it’s way better for our program than getting 3 starts for a kid who is going to be in the program for potentially 6 years.

If Lewis gives us the best s chance against UCLA then great, otherwise start a vet. Now, if we 0-2 put in Lewis and let’s see what we’ve got.

I would be shocked if we won against either UCLA or ASU. I expect to get beat soundly in both of those games.

Really? Maybe ASU, but if this team gets boat raced by UCLA in Boulder then they are staring at 1-6
Yup. What is it, year three in Chip Kelly’s offense? And they have a QB that has a good amount of experience. Against a team with no known QB, that didn’t even have spring ball to install technique and scheme of a new staff. 1st games are notoriously sloppy anyway, plus we have a ton of unknowns with little time to figure them out internally. The only hope would be if our Defense balls out, and UCLA makes a **** load of mistakes (which is plausible I guess).

Eh, nobody had practice time this offseason, and UCLA was pretty mediocre on offense last year and near the bottom in the conference on defense.

Pre-existing knowledge makes a huge difference early is all that I’m saying. Happy to be wrong here.

Going into a year with the idea that losing games is okay is a recipe for disaster. It sends the the message to your team that losing is acceptable and once that mentality gets established it is very hard to change.

Also to recruits you are who they perceive you to be. Lose a lot of games and you are a loser, and given a choice most recruits don't want to play for a loser.

This team has lost enough games in recent years that losing has become the norm. The only thing that will change that is winning games. We aren't good enough to contend but we need every win we can get.

With a senior QB and a better staff vs a frosh QB
A senior qb who was last in the conference in qb rating. I also don’t necessarily agree about the staff. There were plenty of weak links to go around last year and Tucker really struggled in his first year in terms of in game coaching.

I will continue to say ASU is nothing special until they show anything on the field.

The whole division, with the exception of Utah, sucked pretty hard last year.

Usc was solid, not on their normal level but that offense was impressive in year one of the air raid. But yeah the bottom four were very underwhelming and if we don’t get hit hard with injuries in the defensive backfield all at once we are a bowl team.

We’ve had ASU’s number as of late for some reason, but they are clearly a team on the rise. But really? That Sr QB beat out the competition soundly and forced one back up to move to Safety. And now we have a guy that hasn’t coached CFB in over a decade, an oline coach from HS, and an OC that **** the bed a year ago.

just trying to be realistic here

I can understand the sentiment around ASU, but UCLA was 11th in the Pac 12 in scoring defense last year and 8th in scoring offense. Continuity of a bad offense and bad defense isn't what you want... CU fans saw exactly that under 6 years of Mike MacIntyre

Again I will believe it when I see it when ASU. So much fake hype out of the program because of who their head coach is but they are the same program they were at the end of Graham’s time there.

he hasn’t been a head coach but he does atleast have experience on the field and he didn’t just quit coaching the last 10 years. Last year we had weak links too and JJ didn’t do a very good job increasing the output of the offense from where Chev was at, he just did a better job running the ball which probably came from the change in style from tucker vs. The previous regime which wanted small bodies up front and what turned out to be just terrible Coaching from adams. I think it will be a lot different with the talent we have up front but no I am not expecting some spectacular performance. Montez was a vet qb with a big arm but there won’t be some massive drop off because there really can’t be from his overall performance.

I have clear concerns with this staff and recruiting but Rodrigue is supposed to have pretty good knowledge of the system we ran last year. it won’t be a total disaster up front like it was in 2018 but we will have to see how it works with what chev wants to run.

There is a balance to be struck, which has not been done with the previous coaching staffs. You need to play the backup(s) because it will set up an actual QB competition next spring. Otherwise, the tired refrain of "Well, we gotta go with the experienced guy" will be used again and again. The coaching staff has to make a commitment to getting Lewis playing time this season.

**** it man. Solid defense that causes turnovers. Run the ball. Start 3-0. Fact!

I cannot believe you MFers sucked me back in.

I’ve been pretty clear with my opinion of our current situation. So 🤷‍♂️....just trying to be honest with myself after 15 years of misplaced optimism. Hopefully I’m wrong. If I am wrong, I’ll be happy to be the resident negative Nancy by which we maintain long term success through my superstitious efforts.

I am excited to see Lewis as much as anyone. With no one losing a year of eligibility, looking at the future, we could have Lytle for 2 years after this "lost" year. I think Lytle gets the start and I am excited to see what he can do. He was highly recruited, and had a lot of offers. Our previous coaches would not play the best players, they played the older players. No way MT was going to sit a senior QB in his first year as head coach. Therefore, we have no real idea what Lytle is capable of doing. I think Lytle comes in and plays well.
As for Lewis, not having a spring ball hurt his opportunity to be ready for this season. Only having 4 weeks of practice for a freshman get ready for a college season I think is unrealistic. I can see this coaching staff putting in some plays designed for Lewis, getting him some in game experience, and get his feet wet with the speed of the college game. If and when he plays well, I see him getting more time and growing into the offence.
I think Lytle can and will lead this team to a lot of victories.

I get it, I just don't agree that familiarity with a bad offensive system, last practiced 10 months ago is some massive advantage. CU was not a horrible team last year, they just turned in some serious clunkers and had some pretty bad in-game coaching here and there that cost them a few close games.

That offensive system and HC have more proven success in CFB than what we have. I likewise understand your position, and my opinion is based upon the lack of confidence I have in this staff. Time will tell, starting in a few weeks here.

I think my biggest concern right now is it doesn’t seem like Chev has an identity he wants for his offense. I love the concept of being “multiple” with all of the different defensive schemes you see in this league but this might not be the best offseason to do that with the lack of practice time and a new QB. Just seems like that could lead to too much confusion and a lack of execution.

I think when you hear Dorrell talk about having packages for Lewis that is all you need to hear. Even those limited packages will be more effective because of Lewis’s ability to scramble and run RPO. even if that offense is “simpler” it will still be the best way to go forward this season.
