The 2020 COVID Coaching Carousel

Do you think he could go to a place like CU or Iowa State or Indiana and win a natty?
Not to answer for Duff, but in my opinion, he could win a natty anywhere that would give him whatever he says he needs to win one. I don’t think CU, Indiana or Iowa State would do that for him.

Yeah that’s kind of why I’m curious. Has he been that successful because he’s always been at a program that gives him all the money and leeway he wants, or is he such a dynamic coach and recruiter, that he could recreate it with the decent but not great resources of a middle to lower tier P5 program

He would win big anywhere, but probably not national championship level.

FWIW, worth noting LSU was not that great the two decades before he arrived.

Well, Alabama has always been willing to do whatever it takes to win, but guys like Shula couldn’t win there. It takes a combination of a great coach and a school willing to do things other schools won’t do.

I feel like he’s a big enough brand at this point that he wouldn’t need all the resources he currently has. There are some that he’d for sure need, but I think he and a staff of his choice could bring in the talent necessary to make CU a natty contender

This is my thought as well, that he could win in alot of places as long as he isn't handcuffed by the university. So to answer your question I think Saban would get pissed and leave here. But that aside my guess is:

CU - no
Iowa State - probably
Indiana - don't really know about them but I'd say no

It would be much harder at a CU or Iowa State or the like but if anyone could it may be Saban.

Bama is willing to do whatever it takes to win but Saban also adds to that. TSchek memtions the brand. Saban has done very well running his program and getting the most out of his coaches and his talent and getting the talent he wants.

An area that probably gets overlooked though is that he has been a master a relations with the university community and with boosters. He gets them on his side and does a good job of neutralizing those that would stand in his way.

Boulder is certainly not as college football supportive as Tuscaloosa is but Saban might find more support there than many think.

Vandy has a couple advantages over Arizona - location and lack of expectations. Vandy fans know their place in the SEC. They want to win, but they aren’t willing to do the things necessary to compete with the likes of LSU, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and A&M. So they accept a lot of losing. Nashville is a bajillion times better than Tucson. That said, it’s easier to win at UA. You don’t have the same kind of academic restrictions and the conference has more winnable opponents. Vandy should look for a guy in his late 50’s, early 60’s who is looking to finish out his career. (MM really would be a good choice here). UA should be looking for a dynamic young ace recruiter who will stock the cupboard and move on (I envision Chev taking a job like this in a few years assuming he continues his current trajectory).
Was in Tucson last month for 2weeks and staying in Nashville tonight.

Both trips I have/am staying in hotels near campus. Vanderbilt is 100x better.

Arizona has a very strange campus, been there many times. Typically college campuses have an excitement and vibrant energy to them. UA is a bland puke, there are all the quads and walkways you would expect on a campus but it feels so mundane. I tried to associate it with being a downtown campus but even NYU and Pitt had a certain spark to their city blocks.

The only advantage Tucson has over Nashville is landscape vistas and craft beer.

I suspect that's related to why Mel was ready to leave CU so quick. He had learned under Saban and RG didn't want to play that way.

I had been meaning to look into this but hadn't had time. I found this article had some really interesting historical context - https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.te...ture/ut-austin-eyes-of-texas-song-racist/amp/
I have a hard time being sympathetic to the challenges UT faces, but the more I hear about this controversy, the more I’m convinced our society is doomed. There can’t possibly be a person alive who is genuinely offended by that song. Ginned up, artificial offense, sure. The kind of offense that people didn’t know they had until somebody pointed it out to them.
Oh well. Sucks to be UT, I guess.

You think it’s easier to win at ISU than CU?!

ISU has more of a commitment to winning than CU does. That doesn’t necessarily make up for the other challenges they face, but getting kids into school there isn’t as much of a problem. In the context of Saban, he could ask for and get more concessions from ISU than he likely could at CU.

 Funny, I'm more surprised that rich jerk-offs are so upset that the school band won't play a certain song anymore.

You’re really surprised at that? What if somebody dragged out a link to a confederate tune that was identical to “Shoulder to Shoulder”? I have an emotional connection to that song. I’d be pretty upset if that happened. We have some folks saying that CU’s use of a live animal mascot is cruel and should be discontinued. You think it’s just rich jerk-offs who would be upset if CU discontinued the Ralphie program?

That doesn’t really translate to much in reality by looking at the programs.

Everyone is so excited about what Matt Campbell is doing there and he’s only 3 games above .500 for his career there.

Yep, pretty much only jerk offs get upset enough about these things to affect a program.

That's because in the last 100 years, only Earl Bruce has been over .500, and Bruce inherited a better team.

Here are the 3 years before Campbell took over.

Exactly my point.

Why would a school with that kind of historical record be easier to win at than CU?
I don’t think that iy is easier, exactly. It’s just that they have a different mindset that would support a coach like Saban more than he would’ve here.
