NIL act passed - NCAA allows athletes to monetise their name, image, likeness

Nike doesn’t care about other people’s feelings, unless they impact Nikes bottom line. Get too carried away with throwing support at Oregon Athletes and you risk alienating all the other schools you have contracts with.

I guess. Seems like Phil has been throwing a lot of money at Oregon and its athletes for a long time and it hasn’t impacted those other contracts.

They’ve been throwing money at a lot of other schools at the same time, though. If they are going to throw money at individual athletes, they’ll need to be careful to spread it around at least to some extent.

Nike’s chief concern is their pocketbook and their reputation. Other teams will sign deals elsewhere. That level of sponsorship for Oregon alone will cause a backlash. They won’t do it. But these chicken little scenarios sure are fun.

Nike/Oregon can only take that so far. There’s 100’s of Nike schools out there who might not take very kindly to that type of arrangement. I suspect Nike will take advantage of this with a few select top end athletes, but will tread very carefully.
Do other schools care that Nike basically funds that AD and all facilities currently?

Chicken little scenarios? This is great for the players. LOTS of unknown, negative unintended consequences will come out of this.

I think this will be the Wild West for a while until certain things are regulated, which they will need to be. Until then some people are gonna make a real decent amount of money and many of those people will be agents.

Dear NCAA,
Go **** yourself.

Very respectfully,
Jeremy Bloom

*side note, does Jeremy Bloom have any eligibility left?
Yup. The NCAA ****ed with the wrong guy. Truly. He basically has rendered the NCAA powerless. I think this will hasten the eventual dismantling of the NCAA as a governing entity. What takes its place is another one of those great unknowns at this point.

Some sort of organisation governed and owned by the schools.

At the end of the day the NCAA is an empty shell and only enabled by the schools just like the conferences.

All true, but I suspect the conferences themselves will be far more involved in putting together the eventual replacement for the NCAA. I could see a system whereby the P-5 conferences play by one set of rules, and G-5 play by a different set, and then D-2, D-3, etc. in effect, five or six different organizations that would oversee a smaller subset of institutions.
I think the TVA would classify this as a nexus event. 🤓

Uhhh. Ok, if you say so.

I think they will find a way to regulate it some and somehow once all the unintended consequences become clear. I think that's the way it usually goes when you enter uncharted territory such as this. I am not saying those regulations will work, however.

If the schools allow them. Everyone is a straw man for the schools. If Alabama wants to play Georgia they don't need the SEC or NCAA to do so.

Yeah, but they do need something. You can’t have chaos. There needs to be some kind of supervision or the entire thing collapses.

As I said, an organisation owned and governed by the schools and put in power by them to organise and market the competition on their behalf. Like the NFL. But they key is that the NFL is owned by the teams and not just an empty shell tasked with the organisation of the competition like the NCAA or the conferences.

I hate to say this, but this is the kind of thing that could actually help bring Nebraska athletics back to some semblance of relevance. They are perfectly situated to take full advantage of this. That said, a lot is going to depend on who their next AD is and his/her ability to manage the new landscape. They could end up screwing it up spectacularly.

I’m going to bookmark this.
