Who should be our next head coach?

No, I want a real program overall.

The cheap coach would be a placeholder to hopefully prevent a further slide.

Ultimately we need to spend on a coach but that will make no difference unless they commit to the entire program.

Until that happens no decent coach will want to be here and we will be overpaying for losers or leavers.
KD is making over $3MM per year. CU may not pay SEC/Big10 level of salary but they are paying enough to expect more competence than we’re getting. Yes, more budget would be fantastic but if you’re going to throw it at people like coach Rod then what’s the point?

You want a real program, and your idea is to hire a cheap placeholder coach? How many successful programs hire cheap coaches or placeholder coaches?
What will KD be the next couple years (but not cheap?)

Nothing positive comes from keeping KD in charge but they aren't going to pay him and another similar or higher salary.

I want an overhaul of the entire program but for the moment first step is getting KD out.

I would hope we could come up with a better plan than just get rid of KD at all costs and stick someone cheap in his place. Not having a coherent plan or vision for the program is exactly how we got in this mess in the first place and you’re basically advocating for repeating that mistake.

Then the second step is offloading RG and the third sending LC out the door. Those two were responsible for the brilliant idea of hiring, overpaying and guaranteeing the contract for a HC who was in demand as a HC nowhere, mainly because his record, relative to his opportunity, well, stinks. Add to that his reputation as a recruiting ghost makes it an unbelievably bad hire. I don't want either of those two anywhere near any rebuild (which is inevitable given the trajectory).

Honestly, I think this should be the first step.

I've read this entire thread 2.4 times.

It is clear to me that:

1) We need to clean house starting with nEiNass.
2) Hire someone with CU ties - Cabral is available
3) if not Cabral then DAVE the MAN Logan
4) if not Cabral or Logan? Les Miles.

Carry on.

Fire KD, hire Alex Grinch, bring in Jake Spavital as OC/QB when he gets fired, get Spencer Rattler when he inevitably transfers in the offseason, put up 38/game. Profit.

[**** that will never happen, but fun to think about, kind of like winning the lottery]

rattler to Miami (or maybe ASU).....be my guess....

seems like a Miami guy....and i think Manny Diaz sucks.....put up a lot of ACC numbers, win 8 games, be overhyped by ESPN......or hit the future strippers in Tempe....hit the home town pitching.

got a live throwing arm when he shows up.

i have OK family and word is he parties all the time, Eddie Murphy's girl style.

that may change now he's riding the pine.

there is nothing about Rattler that impresses me. He's always seemed like more flash than substance, going back to the time he was being recruited.

With our OL recruiting he might be lucky to put up 38 yards per game.

This isn't a team that is just missing a few things, this is a team that has a few solid positions and the rest are bad to terrible.

A new, better coach and a couple of transfers would no doubt make us better but only putting us on a different level of bad.

Nah. The ineptitude of this team as currently constructed is almost entirely due to the worst coaching in P5. Sure, the OL recruiting hasn't been good and we are starting a Tackle every week who can't play at this level, but with a few good transfers, there is enough talent to win 6+ games with good coaching

Will that talent still be here next year?

This team needs a modern recruiting organization probably more than anything at this point. For that reason, I really don’t love the idea of a rising FCS or G5 coach even though I know there are examples where that has been successful. The Mel Tucker approach was the right one - bring in someone who knows what a successful recruiting organization looks like and provide the resources to set it up. We’ll have to live with the occasional game day boner to dramatically improve talent.

I keep focusing on guys who have been a part of major college programs and seen elite recruiting organizations first hand. My top 3 dream scenario options would be (in order):

1. Tom Herman
2. Jeff Banks
3. Billy Gonzales (honestly CSU should have tried to hire this guy years ago).

Will that talent still be here next year?
In my hypothetical of firing KD and bringing in Grinch/Spavital, which my response to Mtn was based on, I would like to think most guys would stay.

In reality, where KD is retained and there are maybe one or two new offensive coaches, I imagine we will see some talented players leave. Question is, can KD move off Chev/other coaches and make good hires quickly enough to where he can convince guys like Clayton, Rice, Shenault, Broussard(??), etc to stay around?

Will that talent still be here next year?
Great question. Most teams have some attrition every year. CU already has two I think, Murray and Toll. If 4-6 more hit the door, and they are players one might expect to be contributors...look out, this could be really bad.

Will that talent still be here next year?
Not all of it. Maybe not even much of it.

In the late 90’s and early 00’s in the NHL, the Avalanche were an attractive free agency destination because of Roy, Forsberg, Sakic, and a host of other incredible talent. Success makes you a destination.

Sucking will cause you to hemorrhage quickly with the transfer portal. Who, of any value, will want to come here?

He has all the physical tools, but comes off as a kid who was handed everything his entire life, was the number 1 QB recruit in the country and acted like it. It feels like he read his press clippings that talked about him as the Heisman front runner and potential top 5 draft pick coming into this season. Kind of an "all I gotta do is show up" kind of guy.

It's possible this experience is humbling him quite a bit and he'll get serious about his work ethic and motivation at whatever his next stop is, because I can't imagine he's sticking around at OU and if Caleb Williams starts the rest of the season, he isn't going pro, either.

It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. I can’t think of many/any “can’t miss” players who didn’t live up to that billing that managed to transfer and rehabilitate their image.

Smacks of Tate Martell. Maybe he can pull it together before the wheels come off.

McCartney does not win a national championship without either Gee or Marolt, IMO. Admission flexibility was paramount and Gee and Marolt assisted greatly there. Yes, there were outcries and some players had run ins with the law and it was embarrassing. The bad came with the good but some disadvantaged kids got an education and became young men and their lives were changed. Some flamed out.

I guess my point is if there’s to be any hope at all for the future of the football program ever achieving any degree of modest success, it has to start at the top. The president of the university must have a vision for athletics and its proper place in advancing the institution. The AD and the president will frame a long range plan and donors like Kelli Brooks will climb aboard and a new coach, who has pedigree, will see that vision and climb aboard as well. That’s what MT was looking for and didn’t see.
Good amount of Prop 48 & 42 flexibility for Coach Mac, iirc. Wasn't that how we got Sal in?

But why? We are located in a ****ty state for talent, the good talent in the state couldn’t care less about CU because they’ve literally never known CU to be anything but a joke, there aren’t very many boosters in general let alone mega boosters who care deeply about the success of the program, the city of Boulder has never really cared about football, they bolted for the Pac 12, which ended up being run into the ground by Larry Scott increasing the wealth gap between other conferences by a large margin, and the University itself has been run by people who are indifferent toward athletics.

What makes you say there are no excuses to be where we are. It’s all very obvious.

Thread is too early. There may be some good prospects when we are looking in 2023.

Culture can be built in terms of state & city support, fan support, recruit interest, etc.

Basically, everything you listed is fixable except for local talent. But that problem is largely overcome by being in a destination state for all those CA and TX folks who have been driving CO population growth for decades.

In short, CU's football problems are an institutional problem. We mostly need a new President who will drive a cultural change - which is what good CEOs & Presidents do as their primary job responsibility or they fail at the core mission & vision.
