He was the DC under Barry Odom, not Pinkel. Odom was the DC he worked under prior.
Walters did one year under Drinkwitz without Odom so I stand corrected. That’s the only season he worked for an Offensive coach.
But it’s been stated multiple times that his defense at Illinois is his creation and management. Also BB was an average DC.
Don’t forget - Jimbo just beat the possible future SEC champions.

How does that work for CU…who probably won’t be ranked?

Why is this a bad job? We have a lot of small college success in this region and UNC used to be pretty dang good at D2.
What is the issue?
Can Sanford further his career by taking this job?

I'm a former UNC athlete-lack of resources is a major problem for their AD. Could Sanford take the job? Sure-he wouldn't have to move. I think he said at a presser he lives in Frederick right now. That's a major cut in pay for him taking that gig, but he's got two years left of CU money. McCaffrey made 190k there. Sanford was at 700k at CU.
If I'm UNC's AD, I'd reach out.
Why would UNC want him? What are his redeeming qualities that makes him a HC option anywhere?

Adam has talked about it on 247 when profiling Walters as a candidate. I believe he has spoken to the Illinois 247 beat guy about it.
UNC at the time was well suited to compete at D2. They got the right coach and had a solid stretch including playing for national championships.
There is a huge gap between D2 and FCS. UNC struggles to fully fund their 63 scholarship limit, at D2 they were fully funded.
They play in a league with a number of programs that have budgets that are probably at least double what they spend if not more. The Montana Schools are the only show in town and regularly draw close to 20k to home games. They have big booster clubs that fund well.
The California schools have solid alumni bases that donate as well and they sit in the middle of a very fertile recruiting area.
UNC has recently put some money into upgrading their facilities and they paid Eddie Mac a big jump over what they were paying Collins. Still they would need to make a really substantial jump in funding the program just to be at the mid-level of the conference.
Ratz asked a good question about why would anyone want him. I don't see it in his results but he is well enough thought of in the business that he got OC jobs at Notre Dame, Minnesota, and CU and a Head Coaching job at Western Kentucky. His results haven't been what I would want to see but apparently he interviews well and is highly thought of. Players like his energy.
He has the kind of resume that struggling programs often like. Lots of connections to major programs that make him look like a big time candidate to the donors. Keep in mind that they hired a high school coach because he was a former Bronco and a big name in the state.
If he were to turn UNC into a winner he would absolutely further his career. That would probably put him in line for a HC job at the G5 level.
Don't think that is going to matter though because looking at his record I don't expect him to succeed even with substantially more resources, in a setting like UNC that already starts out behind the competition the odds of him being successful look very slim to me.
Walters is one of my top few candidates and maybe #2. I've always supported him. I've promoted him several times on here, against the tide of the "anything but a Buff crowd".
But when it comes to CU head coach hires, I'm from the show-me state! I want proof that I'm not getting Dan Hawkins.
And in Walters case, I think he's probably got the reigns and has proven himself, but it's a big hire and if I'm RG, I do a very deep dive on that point. A lot deeper than Adam's above with some information from a beat guy. We all know how those relationships can sometimes be slanted.
I have no problem with a DC who's worked under good D-minded HC's. Just want to make sure they are not the next Dan Hawkins.
That doesn't DQ Walters at all, it's a point that needs to be well understood though, along with his other qualities of leadership etc.
Not sure your Hawkins analogy lines up since Hawkins actually elevated BSU when he became HC.
If anything, the properish comparison is Walters = Petersen as Hawkins = Beilema
Regardless, I would also prefer someone other than a young, first time HC for CU’s current situation. However, Walters is a rising star and a defensive coaching stud. With CU quickly changing their admissions policies for transfers and seemingly throwing money around and recommitting to football under Todd Saliman, I think Walters could be successful if they are able to go buy a top notch staff and place an emphasis on recruiting.

Probably somebody we’ve never heard of, which is what they should do. I hadn’t heard of any other UNC coach before EM and I’m not too knowledgeable on FCS assistant coaches. Just because you know Sanford doesn’t make him more qualified for that job than a bunch of other guys. Again what has he done well enough to warrant a look as a HC anywhere?
Looking at his actual results I don't disagree with you. A school like UNC is going to struggle anyways but they would have a better chance to succeed hiring a successful coordinator from another FCS program, maybe even a little older guy who has been bypassed at G5. Other better option is to find someone who has built a winner at D2 and who has shown he can succeed with limited resources.
As I posted though the school administrators who make the hiring decision, ADs and their bosses, often want somebody they can sell to the donors and alums as a "bigtime" hire. Sanford has a bunch of P5 programs on his resume, easier to sell the people you are asking to write the checks that are going to pay for him.
He is certainly more qualified that Eddie Mac was and that was their last hire.
In no way am I saying they should hire him. All I am doing is saying why they would give him a look if he applied and also why he might be interested in applying even if it means less money and working in a much lower budget environment than being an assistant at a P5 school.
My question about him now is which P5 school would be willing to give him yet another shot at being their OC? He has multiple failures and no successes, and a couple of those places he can't blame a lack of talent for his failure. Taking a lower division job may be his best chance to have real responsibility.
I really think that Chiv should take the job and put his money where his mouth and Twitter game are and if he can win over 3 years, he can rebuild his reputation and move back up the food chain. He is a good guy and a good recruiter

Can you provide a link that says CU is actually doing this? I’ve seen where it’s been talked about, but not officially been adopted. Apparently I haven’t been paying attention
There isn’t anything formal by anyone. Just RG saying he’s working with DiStephano, and DiStephano saying he’s looking at the credit transfer situation.
I’m sure a candidate or three of ours has said to address this issue as a precondition to taking the job.
