CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

Wilner is right. This is a case study in accountability. The Presidents and Chancellors failed in a major way. Not only did they not provide enough oversight, but they viewed themselves as an athletic conference instead of a football conference, hired a guy who managed it as such, and then was allowed to destroy the conference through horrible media deals, decisions and exorbitant spending

I'm fine with Wilner casting shade on Phil.

He's been so over the top in attacking the Pac 12 chancellors, though, that he comes across as minimizing or even excusing blame from Larry Scott and team.
Larry Scott can only do as much damage as his bosses (chancellors and presidents) allow him to do, and they allowed him to have unchecked power for not real reason.

Wilner couldn’t wait to tie Colorado to the WSU story in some way. He has an agenda against CU. As a Cal grad and someone who covers Cal/Stanford he sees CU as competition for a B1G down the road. That’s why he’s always writing us off into the B12 and Cal/Stanford get magically written into the B1G.

Maybe I'm missing something, but did Wilner tie CU to the WSU story? All I see is him responding to some guys random tweet about how CU would leave the Pac 12 if the conference tried to make CU pay the $5.7m.

He is. He’s associating CU with the payment issue. There’s a reason why he quote tweeted a CU fan response that said we can’t afford the payment and no one else. It makes us look bad.

Is anyone else in the comments saying their football program can't afford it because they just started investing in football again and therefore will leave if the Pac 12 tries to force them to pay it?

It was an idiotic comment by that CU fan and deserves to be put on blast. I think you're being a little bit sensitive.
It happened in Wilner's backyard while he was the journalist who was most prominently on the beat.

Why didn't he do his job?
Was Wilner privvy to the Pac 12's financial records for the past decade? I'm seriously at a loss for how you think this is truly anyone's fault but the Presidents and Chancellors of the Universities.

It's like blaming Roger Goodell instead of the NFL owners.

It’s true. I’m in a glass case of emotion.

I can't wait for the #culturalfit arguments on here if the Buffs head back to the commuter/rapey/sloppy-seconds/leftover conference.

Who would Prime want to take down the most on an annual basis?

Rhule and Tucker have to be at the top of the list.

Second place is Norvell and now the Nard dog for popping off.

And then Saban.

No one in the B12 registers as a coaching rival.

Chances B12 removes the exit fee (2 years of earnings) that runs for 99 years - 0.00%

Chances we can leave after 5 years - 0.00%

Chances we could end up in B1G or SEC or a merged conference relatively soon - >0.00%

If there’s an open door policy without an onerous exit fee + switching conferences is easy to do then sure. But we know that’s not the case on both fronts. With so much going on and CU having the hot hand, we need to play this out and not fold under pressure.
If it comes to it and goes down the way he says, then were in dire straits, and they dont have to offer us full rights either.

It’s all a negotiation. Would the Big12 rather have CU for the next 5 years then lose us, or never have us at all?
With no conference to play in? We have no leverage at all.

SI article points to the Big 12 president meetings at the end of this month. May be happening this week or next week atter Memorial Day at the latest. People have been saying after Memorial Day is when things could really heat up.

Everyone's favorite tweeter MHver3 is starting to croak again after being off of Twitter for a few weeks. He started up again after Barry Trammel of the Oklahoman (who is well connected in the Big 12) posted his article about CU going back to the Big 12.
Hopefully this time the BigXII checks with its TV gods to grant additional shares BEFORE inviting new teams to the party. 😂

I didn't see mention of this topic on Allbuffs. I believe this has the potential to lead to radical changes in college sports, including realignment, on a scale simliar to NIL and transfers.

For those who have been commenting about nothing new ITT, this should give something to chew on.

and, I have to admit, the prospect that this could absolutely fck over the private schools and potentially not the publics has me giddy.

Kinda. But it's much more like blaming a CEO for tanking a company. Are the Board of Directors at fault? Sure they are. But the CEO is generally given broad authority to set and execute on strategy, and when the strategy is found to have failed the CEO is generally, and rightfully, the one that takes the fall.

I'm not trying to excuse the Presidents and Chancellors. They certainly watched the mess unfold in front of their eyes. But they are academics, not media relation experts. They trusted their CEO do his job. However, Larry Scott, and his failed strategy and mismanagement, should take the brunt of the blame.

The Presidents and Chancellors have a lot of things they're paying attention to. Larry Scott had ONE JOB.

Yes he likely knew... Larry Scott was his source on most of his **** while he was around....
