COACH PRIME SIGNS 5 YEAR EXTENSION

Prime's Buyout Clause to leave:

$12,000,000, if terminated on or before December 31, 2025;
$10,000,000, if terminated on or before December 31, 2026;
$6,000,000, if terminated on or before December 31, 2027;
$4,000,000, if terminated on or before December 31, 2028;
$3,000,000, if terminated on or before December 31, 2029.

He has to pay a buyout even if we fire him? RG really upped his contract game!!!

Just did some spot checking and for comparison:

If Dabo was to leave this year for another coaching role, the buyout is $60 million.

If Kirby was to leave this year for another coaching role, the buyout is $118 million.

Prime’s buyout numbers are comically low for the 4th highest paid coach in the country. I’m sure part of that is at his request. But there are better ways to structure this than blanket buyout numbers.

E.g. 80% of remaining contract after year 1, 70% after year 2, etc. IF he takes another college coaching role.

Maybe lower numbers if he takes a pro role because I find that highly unlikely.

Even lower if he leaves coaching and wants to do something else, on his own accord.

CU buyout language strikes again. Hopefully, we don’t get bit in the ass this time.
Where you get those numbers for Kirby? I see 5, 4, 3…

Not an employment lawyer, but if the damages clause is too high, I think it would be unenforceable. Tantamount to slavery. Well-paid slavery, but I suspect still unenforceable.

Keep in mind that if somebody were to hire Prime away in addition to paying the damages specified in the contract it's hard to image that they would be paying him less than what this contract pays.

Not putting huge amounts of money into the universities coffers but hiring Deion away from Boulder would mean a first year outlay of at least $15 million and likely more.

He isn't going anywhere unless CU gives him a reason to look elsewhere or something comes up that would be of a nature that we wouldn't want to force him to be here anyways.

Good to have what most of us knew was coming done. Honestly, considering statutory limitations this is a good deal. Now to enjoy what comes next. Big time winning

From October, so yeah it probably dropped but I can’t imagine it was a massive drop. Still likely above $100 mm

So $35m over 5 years. The reason the other coaches have larger buyouts is because they are getting 10 year contracts. Extending Primes out another 5 and doubling that buyout to $70m is on par, but the state of CO doesn’t allow more than 5 year contracts, iirc
If it was cumulative, I’d think it was fantastic. I don’t believe it is

OK, this is the amount the school pays Kirb if they fire him. If another school hires Kirb, they owe UGA 5, 4 etc.

Here’s the thing for me. First, Deion has obviously bought into CU, Boulder and Colorado. I think he loves it here.

Second, the University of Colorado has made a huge philosophical turn in their support of football. If Prime were to leave, their willingness to pay a top 10 salary will attract great candidates.

President Saliman gets it and it shows.

I think that those values are cumulative.

If he got a new gig next year, it would be "on or before" December 31, 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029.
If these are cumulative they are the most massive handcuffs in the history of sport. And they are already 2X that of other coaches like Kirby Smart.

Ya I suppose you're right.

The language seems odd because I would think a date of say 2/1/2026 would qualify for the "on or before" clause for 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029. I would think they would need a qualifier like: on or before December 31st, 2027 and after January 1st, 2027.

Stunning to me that KS could resign and only owe UGA $5M but if they can him, would owe $85M....
