'20 AZ WDE Jason Harris (SIGNED to COLORADO)

I think it’s funny how serious people take 17 year old kids social media.

To be fair, people really don't have much else to go off of. In the past I've tried to NOT pay attention to recruiting until signing day. I've only started following recruits on twitter this year. It's been....interesting.....but I'll probably go back to not snooping for my presents and wait to be surprised on Christmas Morning.

AMERICA!!!!....

Harris is a rare talent. Guys with his length that actually have an explosive first step & closing ability are not seen too often. If we get him, I'll be more excited about this recruit than I've been about anyone the Buffs have signed in the past decade. The one year in recent seasons we have seen a great defense at CU it was keyed by Gilbert giving us big play ability from an edge rusher. No secondary is going to hold up with a pass rush that needs to bring 6 or 7 to create pressure. Conversely, mediocre secondaries end up looking pretty darn good when our 4 can beat their 5 to force offenses to leave in a TE and/or RB to help with protection even when we're not blitzing.

Envisioning a 2021 DL with Alfano, Sami, Lang and (beefed up) Harris...

Not sure Harris can't play right away...most recent pic of in home visit he looked 225 - 230 range. If he gets up to 245 I could see him playing right away
Yeah, that's why I said 2021 DL. If Alfano can play in 2020, I really like that group too with Alfano, Mustafa, Sami and Lang, but that group is missing a true edge pass rusher like Harris. If Harris can take 2020 as a RS year and bulk up to 250, look the **** out

I get it...just heard some talk of Harris needing to redshirt. My thoughts are if he can contribute right away he needs to play, even if he is a little light.

I agree. Particularly since he's gone to the NFL once he's 3 years removed from high school if he's the player I think he is. I'd much rather that happen after a true Junior season than a RS-Soph season.

Nothing wrong with rushing him from the edge then later moving him to the DE when he builds up.

Jimmie Gilbert seemed to perform well as a 230lb senior.
Yep. Smaller frame, though... but he might not have actually weighed over 220 so I think your point stands regardless. Gilbert was skinny even as a senior. Being underweight is a bigger issue for setting the edge in run defense than it is for pass rush. That's where Gilbert struggled.

Me too, it’s sucks we have to wait (most likely) till January to find out. Oh well, it’s worth the wait if we land him.

Harris's problem early on will be holding up with force. He is so friggin long that 250 lbs is the equivalent of a 6'4" guy (like Gilbert) at 230 IMO. He needs more weight in his ass and legs more than anything, otherwise a shorter guy with a lower center of gravity will be able to take advantage.

Harris can be used as a 3rd down rush specialist his first year
While I don't disagree with that, it's not that simple. I'm not so sure that this defensive staff does much of that (specialist) or else you would have seen Callier and Tchangum more than we did early in the year. Per my comment above, even as a pass rusher, while extremely explosive for his size, Harris does not have the pure speed to turn a corner without applying force to the edge. I would love to be proven wrong on this, I just don't personally see him being physically ready to play more than spot duty in 4 games next year. After that, look out!

Right there with you. Very important piece to this class.

Great point. If the Buffs land Harris, I'm not sure a RS is actually the prudent move, unless he would just be a liability out there as a Freshman. Redshirt or not, if he's the player we think he is, he's gone after year three, so might as well use him as much as you can from day one. Basically, the coaches shouldn't make a similar mistake with Harris that the last staff did with Viska (and yes, I know Viska didn't RS, but he also didn't play as much as he should have his Freshman year).

Pretty much what I was thinking. 3 and out, kid is far from an every-down player in year 1, but still can bring it situationally.
By year three, we're able to see the complete player that he is and he's likely gone after that.

He may not give us the ultimate "career value" that others may bring, but he will be a difference-maker.

Sure. Callier and Tchangam seemed like great kids who worked hard, but they aren't in the same hemisphere as Harris. You get Harris in any way you can. For his first year, that is probably on situations you know they will be passing. He is that special.
