I went with C. I'm hoping the O will help the D. Injuries, we can't afford for sure but it's bound to happen. I think the D will be better but it'll take a bit. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyone who watched last year knows that the defense could be better, lots better.

Being a MacIntyre team, the DBs will be very good. We lose a 2nd round draft choice and a guy who was a CFA with options but we are still talented and will still be well coached.

LBs will be better. Lewis returns and is another guy who could end up in the upper half of the draft, plus athlete who makes plays. We still aren't deep at LB but last years freshman will be stepping up and we have a couple JC guys who should help.

The D line should also be deeper and more athletic with a better rotation at DE. Even if Edwards is playing well big guys can't play every down. We will need Tuiloma to be an effective back-up and maybe even get some plays from Sami

The huge question though, and what will determine how good this defense is will be Javier and the NT position. If he can come in and hold the point of attack the D will be much better, if not then the other improvements won't matter much.

I'm going to be optimistic. I think we have made an improvement in our DL coach and the talent is improving. I'd set them between 40-60 which will put us in a bowl.

Seems to me that there will be decent speed on this D. However, speed, lack of good football instincts and average athleticism means over running plays and/or not being in the proper position.... a lot.

I’m not sold on the DC but, I do expect some improvement in year two. I’ll guess they end the season in the upper 60’s of D’s. Manageable for a bowl game.

Do we have anyone in the front seven that would start on the top 25 teams?

Front seven is the real question to me. We've got guys in the secondary that can play. I think it was TSheck talking about how a d-line helps the secondary a ton. He's right about that. It's hard to cover someone for 4 to 5 seconds. Pass rush is definitely your friend.

I am right in between B and C. It will be better but I am not sure the D lone will be good enough to move them past C

The pass D was decent to pretty good last year. It comes down to run D and really what CU can do on the interior of the defense. Color me concerned and not sure if they are improved. 75-100 total D

The biggest question Mark's on this D are the line, which I think will improve dramatically and the defensive play caller, who has zero instincts or feel for the game. Good recruiter though.

Some other key stats from 2017 to go with that #111 in yardage:

Scoring defense: #116 (we bent and we broke)
3rd down conversion %: #67-tie (did get off the field some, but when we didn't it snowballed quickly)
Red Zone defense: #110-tie (when teams got a drive going, they finished)
Tackles for Loss: #110-tie (made few plays in the opponent's backfield)
Team Sacks: #86-tie (dialed up pressure a bit better than on TFLs, but still bad)
Turnovers Gained: #122 (the worst stat - can still win if everything else is bad but the D gets you extra possessions and flips field/ momentum with TOs, but the 2017 defense didn't)

That Arizona game.

So much production to replace and still some unprovens? I voted barely good enough to make a bowl.

Fixed the link in the OP. Had it going to the 2014 stats instead of the 2017. We were actually #109, falling from #19 the season before.

Concerns about the DC still haunt me. I think we took a huge step back there and will continue to think so until proven otherwise.

Answer B

Big time improvement from both Javier and Mulumba in the 2nd season, along with Callier and Lang ready to play a big part, the return of Falo, the additions of Antwine and Mustafa and a (hopefully) better DL coach is going to have the DL playing at a high level. Night and day improvement over last year.
Damn I hope you're right TSchekler.

A part of it is how bad we were last year, but I'm actually excited to see our D. Sure we haven't seen him play yet, but I think Taylor could be special based on his measurables alone. I know he' wasn't a terror on the edge, but I still thought we missed Falo last year. If Lang has developed and Edwards has learned from his first year, we could be greatly improved. I'm an optimist though.

They will have better depth on the dline, which was a gigantic issue last year. I think that will help in the close games they lost last year. Talent isn't where it needs to be and still young on the dline, but think they will be improved. We won't see a 2016 type dline, but overall I think there is better depth than 2016 team had on the dline.

Is this like that "meow" thing in Super Troopers where you're trying to say "dline" as many times as possible?
