I just want to see improved fundamentals. The ‘16 group never missed a tackle and made an amazing amount or one v one tackles in space. I’m a lot less concerned about play calling than pure fundamentals. I think MM will get that focus back this year.
B
That team was gap sound, talented, disciplined and athletic. ‘17 team has maybe one or two of those.

I’m hoping MM gets his focus back...seemed like the Tumpkin crap took it out on him. He’s got enough talent and athleticism to win 10 games this year IMO...only U$C and UW completely outclass us in talent.

Holy crap. Dude looks like a completely different guy. Just filled up my Javy koolaid!
He looks quick.

I’m getting excited.

He looks like an athlete instead of a big, fat guy.

He is playing now for money. The Javier Edwards playing last year would be looking at the end of his football career this season. If he can be a guy who controls the middle of the LOS and also has the quickness to take advantage of opportunity to penetrate and make plays with his natural size he will be getting paid after next season.

He is looking and acting like a guy who wants it and is willing to do what it takes to get it. Could be the key to our entire defense next season.

Spot on. Looking to get paid and starting to look the part. Here’s to hoping new coaching will improve his technique, which was awful last year. Combine a focused mindset, a tuned physique, with some technique and he’ll play on Sundays.

The following quote from Howell's article on Mo Bandi made me a bit more confident in our DL. We need a lot of improvement from a lot of guys and maybe Drake is the type of coach to make that happen.

His efforts in football bring immediate rewards, such as coming out of spring more confident than ever in his improvement, thanks to his new position coach, Kwahn Drake.

"I've never had a better coach to coach me up the way he does," Bandi said. "He teaches you everything in a step-by-step process that no other coaches really do. Every little thing matters to him and I've definitely improved more this one spring ball than I have in pretty much my entire career. I'm definitely headed in a good direction. I've responded well to his style of coaching."

The caveat being he’s only had high school coaches and Jim Jeffcoat for comparison.

Sounds like 2017 taught him how much he needed to transform his body to be productive in this league. Couple that with better coach and i could see big things from a smaller Javier. Good for him!

In the spring scrimmage, Javier was still standing up as his first move and getting easily handled by Pursell and even Heston Paige, on most plays.
Without dramatic improvement in technique and physique, I don't see Edwards getting a ton of snaps this year (my conclusion). Sami is not going to redshirt. If he can get the fundamentals down, he is a guy who will create some serious havoc inside.

He got a ton of snaps last year why wouldn't he this year?

Sami is not a savior for the NT position in 2018. If Edwards hasn't improved his conditioning and technique to the point where he doesn't get a ton of snaps, we're in big trouble.

Well, I'd hope the only direction, after last season, for Javier to go is up. No way in hell he was in shape for that one. Hope he's fixed his technique issue as well.

Because we expect the D to be better this year. If he's not, he won't play much. That stand-up move is a non-starter.

New position coach, improved physique, etc could help him a lot. But he has to not stand up. Sami may not be the savior, but he looked better in his first scrimmage with zero experience than Edwards did after 3 years of CFB. That's a wake up call.

If Edwards is not playing much in 2018, I think we have seen this show before. The DL wears down playing nine straight conference games and potentially costs the team a bowl game.

Sami will play. He has to.

Javier stands up because his weight is too far back. Too big/too tired to assume correct 3 point stance, thus far in his career.

I also likes the four front, 3rd rush package with which they experimented on 3rd down this spring. Two DTs, 2 edge DEs. Obviously, Javier was not a part of this package.

I think they'd like to redshirt Sami, so whether he plays will be based on whether he beats out Javier or Tuiloma. I don't see him burning the RS as our 3rd string NT, especially since we've got Franke to work in there to give a different look at times.

Good point. Too big and athletic to RS to me. Can see him in goal line packages as well. Not a Franke fan as NT. Do like him as a rush tackle in four front with Lange.

Franke on 3rd and long on a sub would provide an incredible jolt on the interior in a middle of a drive.

Drew Lewis - LB - Buffaloes
Colorado redshirt senior LB Drew Lewis recorded 30 quarterback pressures last season, tied for most among returning FBS linebackers.
Pro Football Focus passing along this bit of statistical fun. For the campaign as a whole, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Lewis racked up 94 total tackles (5.5 for loss) and a pair of sacks. He's proven to be particularly efficient with his quarterback rushes, making PFF's stat all the more impressive. This isn't just a volume effort.

Landman's a guy I've thought since we were recruiting him had the potential to be a star. You never know how they'll respond to what it takes in college, though, so the following was music to my ears. Dude's gonna be special.

Wilson mentioned sophomore linebacker Nate Landman as a player having a great offseason. "I love that kid," Wilson said. "He works his tail off and does everything; wants to be better."

I liked the part about leaders on the team saying things before Wilson has to.
