2019 Buffs Football hype thread

If anyone read The Post, Leavitt was interviewed and said a lot of nice things about the Buffs. Especially how much nicer Boulder is than Eugene. He REALLY wanted the CU HC job, for sure. He believe CU can become a power again.

He and his family still live in Boulder. Kinda hard to stay mad at the guy after that.
I don't have any hard feelings toward Leavitt. And I think he's a damn good football coach. Broncos would be crazy not to hire him for the season as an analyst or something.

Hard to believe ELITE COACH Jim Leavitt begged for the CU job, interviewed at KSU and Texas Tech, but is out of a job right now.

Other than giving us the Baltimore Colts treatment to sell his soul & work for the dux, you’d be right...
He mentioned that Rick George was probably upset with him, and that's why he wasn't interviewed for the CU position, but he said Oregon doubled his salary, so how could he turn that down. I agree with him. He would have been crazy to stay in Boulder when Oregon threw that much money at him.

I think it is really funny that he thinks that is the main reason he did not get an interview at CU.

That Leavitt quote got some play on Oregon twitter. Most of the responses are some variation of a) well true, Boulder is incredible b) well, Boulder is incredible but it doesn’t rain that much here! or c) it’s hard to compete with Boulder but we are still better than most of the Pac12 in terms of scenery.

Worst thing I saw someone say: “well fine but Eugene pays coaches more.”

Other than the fact that he doesn’t play nice with others, has questionable recruiting, hasn’t been a head coach in a decade, will be 63 years old at the start of next season, and it’s doubtful he could assemble a good staff, what do you think is the main reason he didn’t get an interview at...oh never mind, it’s clearly the pettiness of Rick George being upset he took more money to coach elsewhere.

He didn't fit as the HC here, but I'm still a little surprised Oregon went with Mario Cristobal over him. When Herbert leaves Duckland after this year, they'll struggle like USC has post-Darnold.

Cristobal is much younger, has a proven record as a recruiter, and spent several years at the most dominant program of the last decade. Easy choice.

As far as Herbert, I think people are using good/great NFL prospect and great college QB interchangeably with him too often.

He also went 27-47 at FIU before they moved up from the Sun Belt to C-USA-Compare that with Butch Davis.........who is 17-9 entering year 3.

Cristobal is absolutely killing it at recruiting. Oregon may end up with the best recruiting class in the history of the program. Seems like an easy choice to me. Shall see how you sustains that, though.

You've gotta be able to coach up the talent you get too lol when you're in that situation-Look at Washington under Chris Peterson. They've never landed a top 10 national class, and they've never landed the best recruiting class in the conference in his tenure there (247). The core of their CFP team came out of classes that were in the middle of the Pac 12-and in the 20s and 30s nationally, but they've got some of the best coaches at their positions in the country (Jimmy Lake being the most obvious example), and its showing with three NY6 bowl appearances in a row.

If you look at everything without any context as it pertains to FIU, Davis is clearly the much better coach and Cristobal was a bum.

I wanted Leavitt to be the HC in 2015 and feel that he was a major reason that CU won the P-12 South in 2015. That said, once the hiring cycle fired up in 2018 I didn't want him as the HC at CU.

Washington's recruiting has taken a big step forward the past 2-4 years. When all else is equal, recruiting matters the most.

I think JL is a good football coach and a top notch DC. You have to wonder if he stayed at CU, leveraging the Oregon offer for a raise, could he have been retained by Mel Tucker? Finishing out your career as a DC in a town you like isn’t a bad thing. Nick Aliotta did it at Oregon. Fun to speculate, and maybe he regrets the choices. Or maybe he’d rather be retired than only an assistant. Hard to know. I think it’s really unlikely he ever gets a P5 gig at this point.

No question-but being able to coach does too. They've been the gold standard in this conference for the last few years because they can go get talent, and they've also got guys on their staff who can coach the hell out of the talent they get. They also got better at QB with Eason (who was the #1 QB the year he committed to UGA)

Agree with you-but I gotta think he'd listen to CSU if they fired Bobo and showed some interest in him.
