2019 Pac-12 Tourney

That horrible call of a charge on Gatling (easy call on a block) was probably the dagger. ****

I texted my basketball ref brother on that one. He said it was definitely a block, but anytime you lower your shoulder like Gatling did, you're asking for a charge.

Take it FWIW.

Damn.

Washington was the team I really didn't want to have to play. The one really bad matchup for our Buffs (personnel and style of play).

Here's what the ESPN stats show:

3pt Shooting: CU 6/24... UW 7/24 (lost 3 points there)
FT Shooting: CU 21/26... UW 17/27 (gained 4 points there)
2pt Shooting: CU 11/28... UW 14/29 (lost 6 points there)

Really close. They shot better. We did a great job of drawing fouls to get to the line.

Other stats that matter:

Turnovers: CU 17... UW 10 (that's 7 extra possessions for UW)
Offensive Rebounds: CU 18... UW 9 (that's 9 extra possessions for CU)

Basically, our rebounding more than offset the turnover problem. It really came down to UW making more shots.

udub’s defense is really good. Their offense is meh. If they can get that many points off of turnovers consistently in the tourney, they could be a Sweet 16 team.

Also, UW's guards did an incredible job of not allowing our guards to get anything going. Gatling + Kin were 2/17 from the field. If they'd had even what would count as a sub-par shooting night, CU wins that game. ****

Came down to an inept 2nd half offensive game plan. Udub got themselves into foul trouble early and often. The 2nd half should have been all about driving to the rim and trying to draw fouls. So many key Huskies were in foul trouble before the 2nd half. That’s Basketball 101.

Instead, we got the patented Tad Boyle 7 minuted drought of 0 made field goals and like 2 free throw attempts. Kept chucking bricks from 3 pt land. Udub was undisciplined and shot 63% from the line and only 29% from 3. We had a +17 rebound margin. Super winnable game. This is the type of poor offensive coaching that prevents Tad from having legitimate success.

Did Washington close off the middle in the second half or did we just stop throwing in there?

Yep. Center came up to deny while their guards were extending. They shouldn't have been able to do that and still get to the corner quick enough to trap, but they did. I think it was their length and bounce that allowed it because so much of our passing ended up being lobs or bad angles to get around defenders. Nothing crisp and direct enough to give the shooters enough time to get off comfortably.

What we needed in that 2nd half and couldn't get was for Kin and Gatling to beat that extended pressure with dribble penetration. Didn't happen.
