2023 NIT Tourney Thread

Always fun to read a thread after the game is over.

To summarize:

1. All CU players suck except for Quincy Allen.

2. Tad not only plays the wrong guys but makes terrible decisions all game that caused us to lose.

3. Technically getting a win doesn't change #s 1 & 2.

I was going to post something similar.

10/10. Would read again.

The QA discussion was particularly entertaining.

A bunch of Ethan Wrights just won us this game.

Tristan the worst recruit of the 2020 class! Just want to point out Nique was the highest rated for all the Tad haters in 2020. And Luke the second worst recruit 2020. Paired with Ethan the worst transfer recruit we’ve ever had. Paired with Julian Hammond the 5th highest recruit of our heralded 2021 class to beat a good big east team that beat Memphis, UConn, and Rutgers with a coach that last year out coached Cal at Kentucky the current LSU coach who got hired out from Murray State and Matt Painter who has a #1 seed at Purdue.

This all without KJ, Ruff, Hadley, and without Tad playing Allen the minutes you think he deserves, damn we really blow….

I wish we had a team full of Allen’s….
Suck Tad's dick a little harder. Winning ugly doesn't mean **** to me.

We beat Seton Hall in the NIT!!! So impressed

I’ve been called worse.
Like what Moses?:D As far as the game, I fell asleep about 3 or 4 minutes into the second half. Glad they got the W. Reading what I missed sounds like the 2nd was a hot mess. A win is a win so I'll take it after this season.

Not sure what your point is. Are you seriously advocating to say goodbye to Tad? You could go back to Donnie Boyce and King of Park Hill days and still not have better basketball to watch at CU.

Not sure if you are new to watching CU basketball or just really that ignorant.

This year was a disappointment, and we still got a 3 seed in the NIT. When I was at CU, the hoops team was so pathetic that the very thought of a NIT invite was considered ridiculous. So sure, let’s get rid of the one guy who was able to elevate the program from the the depths of generational mediocrity. Great idea. 👍

I get so effing exasperated at these anti Tad people. They don’t even have the guts to admit they want him replaced. Just say it.
I get so effing tired of all the people who think anyone who criticized Tad wants him replaced. I do not - nor have I ever.

You can criticize him and want him to change without wanting him to leave. It's not either / or.

Bears noting that last night's win puts us at 18-16, which guarantees Tad another winning season in his CU career; only one which was a losing season.

It does bear noting, although I think even Tad would admit that anything less than a 20-win season has to be considered a disappointment. The bar has been raised with the CU hoops program.

And with the roller coaster that was this season, the 20-win mark is still in reach.

And for people that don't find that impressive....Here's the list of Pac 12 coaches below.

Bobby Hurley- ASU tenure- 8 seasons - losing seasons 4; ASU has 6 losing seasons in Tad's tenure
Tommy Lloyd- Zona tenure- 2 seasons- losing seasons 0, Arizona last losing season 1983
Mark Fox (fired)- Cal tenure -4 seasons- losing seasons 4; Cal has 6 losing seasons in Tad's tenure
Jerod Haase- Stanford Tenure- 7 seasons- losing seasons 3- also one season at 16-16 and 14-13; Stanford basketball has 4 losing seasons in Tad's tenure and 2 .500 seasons
Andy Enfield- USC Tenure- 10 seasons- losing seasons 3; USC has 5 losing seasons in Tad's tenure
Mick Cronin- UCLA tenure- 4- losing seasons 0; UCLA last losing season 2009
Craig Smith- Utah tenure- 2- losing seasons 1; Utah has 5 losing seasons in Tad's tenure
Kyle Smith- Wazzu tenure- 4 seasons- losing seasons 0, 2 seasons at .500 and 1 season at 14-13, Wazzu has 6 losing seasons in Tad's tenure and 2 .500 seasons
Mike Hopkins- Washington tenure- 6 seasons- 2 losing seasons- 1 season at .500, 1 at 17-15; Washington has 3 losing seasons in Tad's tenure
Dana Altman- Oregon tenure- 13- losing seasons 0, Oregon last losing season 2008
Wayne Tinkle- OSU tenure- 9 seasons- losing seasons 3, 1 season at .500; OSU has 5 losing seasons in Tad's tenure

So basically only the blue bloods who have long basketball tradition and don't have losing seasons regardless who is coaching - UCLA and Arizona.

and a Nike funded school- Oregon are the only pac programs with fewer losing seasons in Tad's tenure. Everyone else has at least several more than Tad. That's damn consistent.

Thanks, and agree with what you said.

Except for zona being a blueblood. 1 natty doesn't quite put them in that rarities air, imo.

Any idea where Patton was with this metric? I think we all know, but would be a good thing to see

Damn. If you start to include results to the school's investment in basketball this gets even crazier. Great post.

Buffs Slip Past Seton Hall In NIT Opener

BOULDER — Colorado's Julian Hammond III hit a layup with 20 seconds remaining Tuesday night and the Buffaloes then came up with a big defensive stop to clinch a 65-64 win over Seton Hall in a first-round NIT game at the CU Events Center.

Tad Boyle's Buffs improved to 18-16 and will face the winner of Wednesday night's New Mexico-Utah Valley game in the second round.

Seton Hall ended its season 17-16.

The game featured 10 lead changes, with Colorado leading by as much as nine in the first half and the Pirates by as much as five in the second half. The Buffs then rallied to grab a six-point edge with just more than four minutes to play — only to see Seton Hall come back to take a 64-63 lead with 32 seconds on the clock.

But Colorado reaped the final bucket with 20 seconds remaining when Hammond took a pass in the paint from Jalen Gabbidon and cashed in the winning bucket. The Buffs then produced one more defensive stop in the final seconds for the win.

Ethan Wright came off the bench to lead the Buffs in scoring with 18 points — his best as a Buff — including four 3-pointers. Tristan da Silva scored 14, Hammond added 10 points and five assists, and Luke O'Brien had eight points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

KC Ndefo led Seton Hall with 18 points.

Colorado shot just 39 percent (21-for-54) but hit 10 of 18 3-point tries. Seton Hall finished 22-for-60 from the floor. CU had a 39-36 rebound edge as well as a 23-8 edge in points off the bench.

"You just knew it was probably going to come down to the end," said Boyle, who is now 89-7 in home non-conference games as CU's coach. "Seton Hall is a tough, hard-nosed team. It's great to win when you don't play your best and it's hard to do that in March. But I thought it was appropriate, the way we stress defense every day in practice, to win that game on a defensive possession."
...

TURNING POINT: This one wasn't decided until the final seconds, when Colorado came up with a key defensive stop after tallying what proved to be the winning bucket with 20 seconds remaining.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs advance in the postseason and are now guaranteed a winning record for the 12th time in Boyle's 13 years in Boulder.

KEY STATISTICS: While the Buffs shot just 39 percent from the floor overall (21-for-54), they hit 10 of 18 3-point tries … Seton Hall finished 22-for-60 from the floor … CU had a 39-36 rebound edge as well as a 23-8 edge in points off the bench.

NEXT UP: The Buffs will play the winner of Wednesday night's New Mexico-Utah Valley game in the second round on either Saturday or Sunday. If New Mexico wins, the Buffs will travel to Albuquerque. If Utah Valley wins, Colorado will host.

And while we are at it let's compare the CU program Tad has to those other programs on a number of factors.

Compare CU to the rest of the PAC based on:
History
Budget
Recruiting base
Fan support
Administrative support
National and local media attention
and keep adding to the list.

We are all biased because we are fans but an honest appraisal puts Tad somewhere between an outstanding job and a miracle worker.

Sure he has some weaknesses and faults, yes he has made some recruiting decisions (and stuck with guys) that we would have liked to see different. Show me the coach in America who doesn't have those. The next John Wooden isn't sitting out there waiting for CU to hire him.
