My understanding is that Tad and Mel Tucker got along pretty well and that Tucker imparted some strategies & tactics that had worked at Bama and UGA without being NCAA issues. Tad adjusted methodology and it has paid off these last several recruiting classes.
I agree with some of other reasons sited here for CU’s improvements in recruiting. But I actually give Rick Ray a lot of the credit too.
A lot of the Top-50 guys we missed out on in ‘23 site Coach Ray as their recruiter- as well as does ‘24 Chris Nwuli. When Tad hired Rick- he said it was because:
1) when Tad coached against him, he found they kept going after the same types of recruits; with high character/IQ/skill-sets.
2) Tad said as he got to know Rick personally, he discovered that Coach Ray is also like Tad in his desire to build relationship 1st. Neither of them seem to even bring up Basketball first, until they’ve built a 1 to 3 month long relationship(less with transfer guys). FYI, that is exactly what Jaden, Toombs says he is looking for, in order to commit early, by end of this year (assuming Jaden meant by end of this school year).
I will be even more transparent with how I identify Tad Guys early, as well as how I see Tad/staff connecting well w/ certain recruits:
1) Yes, I’m a white guy, who is more comfortable in Black & Latino cultures- as I grew up as only white guy in the room. I had decent skills as free safety in football, even though my Paternal grandfather was all-Star minor-league catcher in baseball and prized golden gloves boxer-who when I grew 3 1/2 inches my senior year to 6’1 & 185 pounds; All I heard from my grandfather was that “I would’ve made the majors, if I had your size”. So I can relate to a lot of my black friends, with the family pressure in sports. I can also relate to someone like Joe Hurlburt, who grew 2 inches & 15 pounds his senior year, with how long it takes to Grow into your body w/ that kind of growth spurt. I honestly don’t see Joe leaving CU right away, because he knows he’s got another year or 2 in weight room, before he hits his ceiling. I spent my summers (13-20 years old) breaking & training horses for my dad- & taking people out on week-long horse pack-trips for my uncles Outfitting business. My dad pressured me to become a endurance horse racer, because my horsemenship skills surpassed most of the men on my dad’s side of the family by the time I was 16. Turns out riding 8 to 12 hours a day all summer, primed my body to become a semi professional ballet and hip-hop dance performer (I got many scholarships from 18 to 22, and got paid offer at 23-but moved from Albuquerque to here for Grad school instead). I performed Hip-Hop in front 5K people by 20 years old & spent as much time training, rehearsing, and performing as most of my black football and basketball friends did through my school years in college. Also, the fact that I spent most of my downtime at parties that were almost all black, in which I was always the best dancer in the room, regardless of gender, even when the parties were hundreds of African-American people in college-helped me refine my hip-hop skills. Even if I probably learned to be a great hip-hop dancer in high-school- just so I wouldn’t get picked on at those parties-again, as the only white person in room. This all relates to my willingness to tweet to mostly young African-American kids in recent years, and some of those kids retweeted my spot-on assessments up their intangible skills.
I got my masters degree here in Boulder, in somatic psychology, dance/movement therapy. I’ve worked as a psychotherapist and educator in boulder for 30 years, which is why my posts here are so long – I am an educator and I can’t even stop myself from educating strangers in line at the grocery store every day about Colorado having the highest suicide rate in the country and the fastest growing suicide rate. Colorado is test case state for federal government, in order to determine best suicide prevention strategies to replicate in other states. As one of the top suicide prevention specialists in the northern front Range, I felt compelled to start a business called Colorado social emotional learning (SEL) Network. (in case any of you want to contribute to my upcoming Go-Fund Me & maybe eventually nonprofit: X-Twitter @LukeAddington4 and LukeAddingtonTherapist.com). So I do apologize for my consistent long windedness. It’s who I am. I give The basketball recruits that retweeted my tweets all the credit for me learning how to use Twitter, as I would see my face and tweets on sports pages the first few years that I started doing it. now I have enough followers to get paid on Twitter, and plan to continue to use my platforms for good- focusing more on Suicide-Prevention than CU recruiting. That is if Elon Musk doesn’t destroy X-Twitter!
