Is there a line, though?

If we go winless in conference?
If he doesn't make notable roster improvements through the portal this coming off-season?
If we have back to back years like this?
There’s a line, but nobody knows where it is. It’s like indecency. You can’t define it but you know it when you see it. We are a long way from that line, IMO. Tad retires long before we get there.

This is the biggest drop from one year to the next that I've seen in my 4+ decades watching CU hoops. That doesn't leave me with much optimism that he's cut out for this era in CBB, which has evolved completely in less than 5 years. I don't know what's happening behind the scenes but he's clearly not kept up with recent changes in recruiting. Based on his depressing comments in the recent post-games, I don't see much changing by next year.

The other things I've noticed recently from his comments after losses is that he really doesn't have solutions to the problems we're seeing. We turn the ball over to much, we get beat on the offensive boards, and we don't have more than one guy who can make something happen off the dribble (Hammond). So as I'm listening, he's pointing out things that are pretty obvious for any average fan like me to see, but he's not offering solutions. To me, that means he's got guys that he recruited that seem to be doing what he's telling them, and we're still 0-9 in conference. That is not the sign of a program that is going anywhere.

It's a tough business and Tad has been 100% a gentleman, a purely classy guy, but if he doesn't have answers then clearly a change is needed.. The program is much bigger than any one coach or player.

I don’t think you’re giving enough credence to how wide of a gap Tad has raised the ceiling of this program. This will only be his second losing season. 10 20 win seasons in Tad’s tenure for a program that had won 20 games 4 times total in its history before Tad. Yes he absolutely has a longer leash because of these things. I don’t recall exactly when you moved to Colorado and became a fan, but I do know you never experienced how irrelevant this program was.
thinking about the bolded, I went back to look at how he fared over the years in finishing over .500 in conference

not counting this year, 8-3-1, if my tally is correct. that's pretty good.

And in the non-conference, generally a pretty challenging slate. Not this year's slate outside of Maui of course. Prior to your time of fandom, the non-conference schedule was generally dreadful and inflated the records of some mediocre to lousy teams. Kind of like this year's team.

I knew this would be a rebuilding year, with loss of the top 6-7 players f/last year, and I knew we'd be near the bottom of the B12, but this is crazy. Defense, not horrible, but offense?! The turnovers STILL plague the team, and Boyles has never fixed this. And after 35 years a season ticket holder getting kicked out of Sec 14 for students, and nearly 20 years in Section NS2, we get kicked out for big donors $2,500/seat?! And all they offered us was what's left for season seats. . nothing below row 25. Luckily I still have my extra seats in Section 9, R12 aisle. . .but frustrating to watch them lose on TV, and no in person, with visitiing team fans cheering. . . Tired of NILs, Transfer Portal. . academics are gone. . Athletic Dir of Sales. . ? asked me as a "Buff Club Member" if I wanted to be intereviewed on his dissertation at Baylor for the topic of "philanthropic giving to intercollegiate athletics and NIL's. . . boy did he ask the wrong long time season ticket holder/booster!

Don't feel special, everyone got that email.

Talked to someone in the AD who has spent a lot of time with Rick George very recently. Unless Tad decides to retire, he will be back even if he goes 0-20 in the conference. Another bad decision by RG, IMO.

Retaining a coach after going 0-20 in conference play will make CU the absolute laughingstock of college basketball. I would have to think that would be the worst conference record in the history of college basketball, another ignominious achievement for CU athletics.

Of course, all this is probably just fine with Rick George.

It will be embarrassing, but as it's already been discussed here Tad has earned at least one more year here if he wants it. Probably two because next year's battle cry will be, "We've got fresh, good talent in the building, but we're so very young." That said, if Tad allows the dead weight to stay on scholarship past April (Kossaras, Malone, Anderson) and doesn't supplement next year's youth influx with a couple of legit transfer veterans, then he should be forced out before summer workouts begin.

(None of which will happen, so I might as well be typing Loren Ipsum over and over in this box.)

I feel bad for Tad, because we have to keep Prime at all costs
But, that means Tad has to know that and has to creatively come up with the best way to compete, and he is not prepared or able to meet that moment
What Prime has done is unique, but things could be done at CU Basketball to juice up the opportunities, and not sure if Tad has been straight up asking folks with money how much they can help him and the program. Revenue Sharing will help, but no clue why it is not working at all.
Revenue sharing has to help get Dak and Diop happy and build from there

I guess so, but if he's back, I won't be renewing men's basketball tickets after 24 straight years of having them. Boyle is already the longest tenured coach who has not made a single Sweet 16. And if the AD won't make a change if we go winless in 20 conference games, I'm done buying tickets.

I don't think Tad Boyle is a coach for this era of BB. I think coaches need to be evaluated within the context of College environment they are coaching in. Tad is a solid coach but not a great coach. With NIL and the transfer portal, I believe it is difficult to build a team over multiple seasons for someone like Tad who is not the best recruiter.

I also don't believe you automatically get more years if it is obvious you are no longer the guy for the job.

But is CU does move on, they need to seriously revamp their support for MBB.

Great post, and I agree there is no reason to keep Tad, other than $$$. I think it may not get much better from here, and I wonder if Tad would be happy to get the $$ and leave after this year. He has to be miserable.

I think it’s adorable that some of you still have the belief that RG gives a **** about hoops other than “are they getting negative headlines on ESPN for criminal activities?” or “does it cut into Prime’s budget?”

I feel like we need to pool our money next time the powerball gets over a billion and basically buy the basketball program. Tell RG we'll fund the program as long as he ****s off and lets us run it. I think he'd let us do it.

CU basketball, presented by Allbuffs. It would be glorious. Of course we'd have to continually prevent the junta from raiding the funds for hookers and blow parties, but the party after the first national championship would be epic.

This is the first time in the Tad era that I won't attend a game in person. Had season tickets the last three seasons but didn't renew as my son who I attended with left Boulder for college and it didn't look like this season's edition would be anywhere close to last's.

I live less than a 10 minute drive from the Events Center, so its easy to get to if I so desire. However I don't want to spend time or money on a team that isn't competitive in conference play. Tad has done a tremendous job in his time at CU, but I am definitely in the camp that any CU MBB coach who doesn't embrace the portal and to some extent NIL is going to struggle. I am not sure this is who Tad is as a coach.

With the portal the potential for a quick turnaround is there. If Tad stays it will be interesting to see if he changes his philosophy.

I mean, I don't think that's a hot take.
I feel it is when the majority opinion seems to be "Tad doesn't work the portal very well and doesn't play the NIL game, but he's otherwise tried hard over the years so let's give another year or two if he wants".

And I acknowledge my feelings are skewed by anger over this season.

No, I understand your feelings. I hate to keep bringing up the "you weren't here before" thing, but my CU basketball experience started with Miller, then Harrington, then Patton, then Bzdelik. Compared to those guys, Tad has more than earned to choose his own departure date.

Lama cutting every Frosh after two bad games, Zandi burning all of the timeouts 6 minutes into each half, and Goose filling the roster with 11 PGs would make for an interesting product.

Indeed. I think Frosh discussion needs to steer back to is Tad a good recruiter or has he gotten lucky here and there, but has basically recruited a bunch of JAGs, a couple of which have reached some nice potential. This should be the discussion because recruiting is all college sports are about now.

But as Goose said above, RG gives no sh!ts whatsoever about this program. We sit near him now and all season he's happier than a pig in slop so long as he can laugh it up with his buddies, run around after his grandkids, and cheat to the front of every concession line for free food and drink for him and whoever he's with.

I think when you look at the Tad recruits who got to the NBA going back to Dre and how few were blue chips, let alone top 100, along with how many other guys have played professionally in other leagues - Tad is a very savvy recruiter.

He probably would not have got or kept any of them in today’s era of NIL though.

Basketball is the best investment of all
Players are going to stay longer if payed well. 1 and done is going to fade a bit
